We'd still have my wife's ICE van, we both work from home, and 99% of the time my work-related travel is local (within 5 miles). My wife's van can pull the camper for our camping trips, or for our longer drives.

That just seems like a privacy nightmare. No one touches my phone. There’s way too much personal info on there to hand over to anyone, much less cops.

It's a long shot, but I hope that they keep the exposure notification framework and work with the CDC/appropriate orgs around the world to make it a generic exposure notification. The technical feature is impressive, and the usefulness (with proper adoption) would be high for the various occasions where other communicable diseases pop up. It seems easy enough to have a generic app to add the various diseases and their incubation/transmission windows to allow others to be notified.

But, because people are whiny fucks, it'll die and we'll be in a rush to reimplement it for the next thing that comes up.

Even if it did exist in an ideal state, people would still not use it, because people suck.

I'm all for using Linux, and I'm considering moving my desktop over from Win 10, but I've never had any issues with the install of Windows. If it's any level of modern hardware, it should mostly work out of the box.

These kinds of rants really trip my BS detector, because it's just not that complicated. If you can handle Linux but can't manage to even install Windows, I have a lot of questions.

Every time I hear about these events (so WAY too fucking often) I think about my kids, and I hope that we never have to deal with that situation. I'm in the state, and I have plenty of friends in Madison. This is practically hitting home for me.

It also reminds me of the situation we did deal with, which was an abuser. When my kid was in kindergarten. We're pretty sure nothing happened to our kid, but FUCK. I have never wanted to beat someone to death with my own two hands before, but given the chance I definitely could have seen myself losing control.

Keep your UPS maintained, replace the batteries when they age out, and it will be fine. If your UPS supports automated self-tests, use them.

My employer has UPS units spread all over the region we operate in, and we don't have any issues, despite leaving them mostly unattended for years. I have several in my house and I've never given them a second thought aside from battery replacements.

Better option, have a good contract in place.

Take these ideas with a grain of salt, I live and ride in a relatively small city, so 90% or more of the time I have no cars near me. But that's how I rode in college, when I was in a bigger city.

My first job out of college was for an global company. I was there just over one year when they announced they were outsourcing us. On the day of announcement, there were two meetings. One way getting hired by the outsourcer, the other was being let go at some point in the next year (after turnover). Since subset of the let go group was booted that day.

It was a great lesson to learn early in my career.

My loyalty to my employer extends to the 40 hours they pay me. I accept my on call week three times per year, because I'm in IT and that's just how it goes. But past that, I don't care. I do, however, appreciate and enjoy my coworkers. We are friends, and no one abuses that friendship. I would miss working with them if I left, but that's not enough to keep me where I am. I've been looking, but not terribly seriously. For the most part I'm left to manage my stuff, and I don't get too much hassle from above. There is, however, a ton of corporate BS these days.
