EU ruling: tracking-based advertising by Google, Microsoft, Amazon, X, across Europe has no legal basis

From the article:

"Today's court's decision shows that the consent system used by Google, Amazon, X, Microsoft, deceives hundreds of millions of Europeans. The tech industry has sought to hide its vast data breach behind sham consent popups. Tech companies turned the GDPR into a daily nuisance rather than a shield for people." [Dr Johnny Ryan, Director of Enforce at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties]

Today’s judgement confirms the Belgian Data Protection Authority’s 2022 decision. It applies immediately across Europe.

If you can afford it, PeerTube is having a fundraiser for its mobile app

Reply in thread

I really like the app too and I like the improvements they are focusing:

Goal #1: Free PeerTube "Premium" for the people €15,000

Play videos in background
Cast your videos to your TV
Get notified of newly released content
Change the video definition

Goal #2: Share videos from your pocket €35,000

Manage all channels of your account
Edit video chapters, subtitles, info, etc.
Get detailed stats of your content
Upload new videos from your mobile

Goal #3: Livestream from your mobile €55,000

Set up & manage livestream
Use device cameras & connection
Stream live from your hand
No more need for a secondary mobile app dedicated to live streams

Plus on the fireside fedi interview, a rep from peertube said that they would make these improvements whether or not they hit the fundraising goals but the new funds would help

What do you think about the protocol behind Bluesky, ATproto, and how do you think it compares to ActivityPub?

I don't use it much, but from what I understand ATproto used to super expensive to self host but now costs have fallen significantly and other instances outside of the main Bluesky instance have emerged. I think now the problem they have to solve is getting the users (who are something like 99 per cent on the main Bluesky instance) over to the other instances.
