cross-posted from: https://compuverse.uk/post/495710

Schedule | Donate | Prizes | Discord

This year's charity is the Netherlands' MIND (Dutch website), a Dutch charity that strives to prevent mental health issues and supports those who suffer from those.

Donations are currently broken on the site because of a PayPal issue - Prime subs are used for BSG themselves for future events.

[Not My Own] "RetroTV" - A self-made linear TV network for watching films and series

cross-posted from: https://compuverse.uk/post/194017

Spotted this on the Hackaday blog. This project really impressed me at the effort it must've taken to get this right.

"Irish Craic Party" made a "RetroTV" television network running on a Raspberry Pi 4 with an external 2TB hard drive filled with films, series and commercial bumpers and the like to recreate the older 80's and 90's TV networks, with each own recreations or original (derivatives) of actual TV channels from back then.

Sadly, he does not seem to be willing to open source the project, according to the video description:

"Even without: this is a one-off bespoke project with time / effort exceeding what people would likely be willing to pay, DIY media servers are niche, certain omissions would be made to avoid legal clashes and I don't have time to maintain an open-source project. Most of all, I'm ready to move on to new things."

Regardless, this project piqued my interest into wanting to create the same experience for films and series I've even have yet to watch (to combat the "analysis paralysis" his video mentions) while also putting rewatchable stuff on there as well, to keep it fresh and try to actually re-enjoy my favourites.

A suitable and mostly feature-similar to "RetroTV", is the ErsatzTV project, built by an engineer working at Disney for streaming technologies!

[Nintendo Switch - Global Sale] SEGA AGES series 75% off!

cross-posted from: https://compuverse.uk/post/11222

cross-posted from: https://compuverse.uk/post/11221

EXCLUDED TITLES: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Big recommendation on my part, these either have been good emulations for the Switch console or amazing ports/remasters (Fantasy Zone, Virtua Racing). Some of the emulated titles even got bonus features like a moving border based on gyro along with sound effects to make it seem like you're using the real fancy arcade cabinets.

The series has been developed by M2, a popular Japanese development studio responsible for many emulation collections like that of Castlevania, but also the Virtual Console emulators of the Wii U for the DS, GBA and TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine consoles. Not to forget the SEGA Mega Drive (2) Mini and the PC Engine Mini have its emulation done by them.

Own posts aren't viewable from profile?

Starting today, I noticed some of my comments and posts aren't being visible to me when I am logged in. According to the RSS feed, logging out and checking it through an incognito tab, the posts are successfully posted on the instance and others', however.

Take this post for example: https://compuverse.uk/post/822

Here you can see I am able to view my post:

But when looking at my profile, said post is not visible:

Same applies to several recent comments I have made. Am I missing something, or is there something wrong with the instance at the moment? When logging off, I can see the post just fine on my own profile:

This is also the case when using the Android client (Jerboa), and when trying to hard-refresh pages etc.

Let’s talk about media collections: How do you keep your library of your favorite movies and TV shows?

cross-posted from: https://beehaw.org/post/484144

I recently started buying movies on Vudu. I was struggling for a long time with whether or not I wanted to collect media on physical disks or digitally.

Right now that’s what I’m doing but there’s always the looming fear of anything I buy being taken away if the service gets shut down.

I’m curious how others keep their media collections. Are you a Blu-ray or 4k UHD collector? Do you use a digital service like Vudu or something similar?

Tell me your thoughts!

Blu-ray discs are the successor to DVD discs and the competitor of the former HD DVD format. The main variants of the Blu-ray discs are capable of storing 25 GB (single layered), 50-66GB (dual layered), or 100-128GB (BDXL). They are commonly used for home releases of films and shows (along with the still popular DVD format), or used for long-term archival through the use of M-DISCs. Blu-ray players are required to play these discs, although video game consoles (the PlayStation 3, the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4, the Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5) nowadays have Blu-ray player functionality built-in. Discs are still capable of region-locking like DVDs but with simplified regions (A, B, C). Although most discs (especially 4K Ultra HD variants) have relaxed on region-locking the content.

M-DISCs are discs (both DVD and Blu-ray) capable of being written once and kept in storage for a longer period of time, making them ideal for long-term data storage for back-ups of important data.

Blu-ray films are currently released in two main formats: regular Blu-ray films with usually a transparent light or deep blue case, or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with a usually black case. A handy resource to get to know more about technical information of films, is https://www.blu-ray.com/

4K Ultra HD discs tend to contain video material with a resolution of 3840x2160 (either native, or upscaled to said format from a lower resolution master) and can contain a higher colour bit depth compared to regular 720p or 1080p standard Blu-ray discs. The Ultra HD Premium standard has specific requirements regarding the actual disc consumers do receive, along with the master (the original source) of the material prior to putting it onto a Blu-ray disc.

Colour depth as described before, is classified in SDR (Standard Dynamic Range), and HDR (High Dynamic Range). Common standards of HDR are HDR10 (the most common variant), HDR10+ (using dynamic metadata for adjusting), Dolby Vision (using dynamic metadata for adusting; although licensed as some Blu-ray players or TV sets can not display them such as Samsung TVs) and HLG (backward compatble with SDR).
