"There are thousands of volunteers who donated their labour to Duo... Bit by bit all of our work was hidden from us as Duolingo became a publicly-traded company."

That shit is the most infuriating thing ever to me. It seems like so many technical discussions and communities are going to Discord now where that information is not indexed or preserved. How many issues have I had where the answer was sitting on a Discord server that will never appear in any general search result?

What are some double standards in society for men ?

Reply in thread

Just want to let you know that you aren't alone. I have talked to a number of women who advocate for things like DEI and acceptance (which is something I also believe quite strongly in) but often default to preferring more traditional gender norms in dating. When pressed on the issue (not like I'm interrogating them just through normal conversations and getting to know them) they will inevitably say that it is ultimately "just their preference".

What I find so odd about that "preference" is if a man behaves in accordance with the traditional/societal gender norms in the beginning of the courting process, why is it surprising that they do the same thing later in the relationship when it comes to sharing emotional labor or various types of household chores?

I know the below is taking it to a bit of an extreme example but that behavior and "preference" often reminds me the sentiment "the only moral abortion is my abortion". Like I get it, there are a lot of shitty people out there who have no interest in putting in the effort, and they absolutely are not worth the time and effort, but when you do meet someone who is willing to put in that effort, it isn't really fair to treat them like all those other people.

YouTube isn't happy you're using ad blockers — and it's doing something about it

Reply in thread

What kinda bothers me is that I recognize that something like YouTube is expensive to run and just switching to an alternative isn't super feasible. I would be more than happy to pay for a service like YouTube that I use everyday. HOWEVER, not with their bullshit double dipping. If I am paying a company like Google to use their services, I don't think it's unreasonable that their should be an expectation or mechanism where that means I am not just no longer served ads, but that all tracking and data collection about my account(s) are stopped.

That's never going to happen though :/

I could be wrong, but the reason I'm annoyed with her specifically isn't because of the use of private planes (I am annoyed by it, but that isn't specific to her). I'm annoyed with her legally harassing the person that made a bot that used publicly available data to track her plane(s).

That's why I am specifically amused by these posts, not sure if it's the same for everyone.

Your benefit of the doubt assumption is correct. He has explained it in detail a couple of times. Like you I find it unfortunate and frustrating.

Still, based on some of the numbers they have talked about their employee retention is very good and considering how talented many of the people who work for him are, if it were a shitty place to work that could likely easily find work elsewhere. I have a number of criticisms of Linus and his ADHD snap judgments or out of touch privileged takes, but he still strikes me as someone that does genuinely want to do the right thing that got insanely lucky and had to adapt to a crazy situation no random person off thee street would ever be that prepared before.

US Tourism Sector Plunges into Unprecedented Revenue Crisis in 2025 as America First Policy Ravages Global Visitor Arrivals

Let's fucking go! Keep it up everyone, make people here really see and feel the consequences.

I'm under no illusion that anyone who voted for this will "feel bad" or regret their vote. As we have been seeing the people who voted for this do not regret their decision perse. However, the hate that fuels them will only take them so far. If things get bad enough quick enough they might be able to remember it the next time (if there ever is one). I think the cult following of Trump and their emotional sunk cost fallacy won't let them see that voting for Trump was a bad idea, but there is a small chance they will recognize and reject it in whoever comes next.

I'm under no illusion the above will actually happen, I just think it's the best that can be hoped for.

Zenni’s Anti-Facial Recognition Glasses are Eyewear for Our Paranoid Age

Reply in thread

You aren't wrong, but I still see two distinct benefits assuming there is an IR reflective or absorbent coating that can interfere with facial recognition.

  • For non government entities it makes direct tracking of individuals much harder (i.e. if you decide not to carry your phone or smart device any one company probably doesn't know who you are).
  • For government entities it's about making their job harder and increasing the error rate. You are right that they can still track someone via those means, but any time they have to correlate data or use multiple sources it does become more resource intensive in some way.

Realistically will either of the above matter? Probably not. For it to be effective a large portion of the population would need to care about their privacy, or even their principles above convenience, which they usually don't. However, I can't control what other people do, only what I do. So in this kind of situation I do my best to be a good example of the behavior I would like to see from others and do my best to not contribute to the Prisoner's Dilemma or Tragedy of the Commons.

It's not much, arguably it's basically nothing, but it's what I have.
