Reddit isnt dead yet, and it will be much harder for youtube to die. Kinda hard to make creators move when its their job, and without them moving, there is no chance of any progress occuring.
Right now, the best thing they can do is host their content on youtube AND other alternatives like Odyssey. This lets them make the same money they always had, but also gives people an option to watch it somewhere else. Unfortuately, your average youtuber is completely clueless about this option and so you mainly only see tech people doing it with only a few exceptions here and there.

Is anyone else having trouble giving up Reddit due to content?
I just use reddit for basic news on specific products I'm looking forward to, and the occasional time I need to search a specific question on it.
After trying out Lemmy, I used a script to delete mass edit/delete all my stuff in reddit, deleted the account, and never went back. I find no enjoyment in commenting on reddit anymore so it was an easy decision.
I agree Lemmy has a long way to go, but I only see it getting better from here which is enough for me to stick with it.
Now that you mention it though, communities do kinda feel empty. Not as in a lack of users/content, but that theres nothing in them that try to promote discussion like "weekly discussions" you would see on reddit. Its more or less entirely some random post by someone, or a news post.
As someone who only cares about news and the discussion around that news, Lemmy satisfies me pretty well. But for people who want a more social experience (probably most people), Lemmy begins to fall apart quickly.
Right now, I think the memes community is really the only active social one.

Is anyone else getting downvotes for benign disagreements here?
You will get downvoted in any disagreement, that's not exclusive to reddit or Lemmy, that happens in any social media with downvotes.
The purpose of downvotes is to show what the general people in that common section think about your comment. You shouldn't give any hoot about it other than the info it provides.
Obviously, if you are talking in controversal topics or ones with conflicting sides, you are gonna see alot of downvotes. Its just people expressing their opinion.
Echo chambers are just a natural part of communities. People often come to feel validated so they stick to ones with the same thoughts as them. I don't recommend trying to argue/discuss with people who only want to "win" cuz there's nothing to gain.
Talk with those who argue because they want to learn or understand something better. (or perhaps help you learn something new)

This makes me wonder if its better to post in the general Nintendo one, or in the more specific ones.
In reddit, it made more sense to post in the specific subreddits because there was enough people.
But if there isnt enough, should people just post on the main one instead?

What VPN should I use now that Mullvad doesn't allow portforwarding?
Just learned about the removal of port forwarding. Damn this sucks.

Thoughts on Mullvad's Browser?
Looks good, but I dont see a reason why I would use it over librewolf tbh.

What do you think about sublemmies that add content by reposting from Reddit?
I think its good even if lemmy becomes huge, the less we have to look into those other sites to get info, the better.
And it helping the growth of the communities just makes it better. I hope people bring stuff from the other subreddits too.

How to make instances have even less power?
Content is basically avaliable to everyone regardless of what you end up choosing. At worst, they can block an instance from interacting with another.
Most problems can just be solved by moving to a new instance that meets your needs. Or if you really must, make your own with your own rules.
My concern is an instance shutting down and losing access to all that information. I can always make a new account, but losing all that info from the entire instance could be a big problem. Maybe by then tho people will archive them somehow.
The most extreme case I can think of would be instances blocking everyone but themselves or a few select instances, and forcing everyone within them to follow their rules to access it. But I feel like that would be hard to pull off, people would just jump ship way before it gets to that point.

Are you cancelling streaming services?
I almost never watch stuff outside of YouTube and the like. If I really did wanted to watch something, its likely an older show that I can just torrent.

PSA: Beehaw just closed federation with most instances, don't use this community
Reply in thread
I remember seeing an older lemmy user talk about it on reddit, but he basically said that for these alternatives to be successful, we have to avoid supporting instances that push other ones away cuz otherwise it heavily cuts the userbase and prevents the entire thing as a whole from growing.
It sucks cuz I understand their prespective, but if instances keep separating from each other, we wont make progress and will just confuse users into thinking they are less communities and people than there actually is.
It also seems instance admins dont have as many tools as they should have. They apparantly cant make it read only for other instances or any sort of partial blocking at all, its either all ban or nothing. Polishing these issues up should help instance admins make less extreme decisions.

direct links to pirated media
Even if everyone could freely post links with no risk, I dont really see many cases where clicking that random person's link is better than using a megathread that is already been approved.
I think thats just gonna lead into trouble and would rather just point people to the megathread or mention a name that they can search and go find themselves.

What options you would like to have in certain Nintendo games?
Overall better control options is all I want. More accessibility options is always good, but I dont know a first party game thats needs an easy mode.
They are usually already easy enough for even new gamers, or already have an easy mode implemented in some way.

Thoughts on Mullvad's Browser?
Reply in thread
As the other guy said, its basically firefox but with really strong defaults out of the box. Its a good easy solution for the majority of people who want a browser that gets the job done.
I install it, get a dark mode extension, maybe change the search engine if I dont like it (Default was DuckDuckGo, but I believe that changed) and im ready to start browsing. Deleting all cookies and history every time I close it is also very nice. (Though you can make exceptions if you like)

Games that suprised you
Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky had poor reviews on IGN so I decided to give it a shot and it became one of my favorite games of all time.

What is a pending subscription?
Its just waiting to get feedback. Clicking subscribe doesnt happen instantly, it needs to send a request and then wait for the instance to respond.

General rule of thumb is to update luma before performing a system update. If the luma version is old, then it wont support the latest 3ds update and wont boot to the home menu.
This doesnt mean its bricked, but that you are now forced to take out your sd card and update luma to boot to the home menu properly.
So just update luma, then do a system update and you are good. Worst case is that it fails to boot, you update luma on your sd card, and then boot just fine anyways.

Is there a safe way to do stuff without a vpn?
I would just use mullvad vpn. If you wanna save, you can just buy one month and download everything you want before it ends.
Though I use mullvad for alot of stuff so I never found the price to be expensive.
Your only other reasonable option is to simply not torrent.
