First of all I agree, but also on that note- we have actually been in touch with the writer for that episode (Eric Anthony Glover) about a possible AMA in the future as well. But first we want to see how this one goes!

Mine?
Instance admin here, this is backwards. Instance costs increase with the number of users because we don't sell ads. The only people we want signing up for accounts on our instance are people who are excited to be there, and intend to bring their singular wit and conversational A-game.

Stories like this make me very happy to hear. When I heard the /r/StarTrek and Daystrom mods talking about joining Lemmy I'd thought bringing their reputation for positivity and tolerance to a Trek-themed instance could provide a familiar and comfortable jumping-off point for users unsure about the broader Fediverse.

You are correct that it is a requirement for all communities hosted on this instance to be actively moderated within instance principles.

The Doctor Who wiki has forked from Fandom and is now self-hosted
Good for them! I have said this before, but I would be more than happy to have a chat about providing hosting to M-A or at least offering them wiki.startrek.website (or whatever) assuming it's sustainable of course.

That's a good point I hadn't considered, appreciate the insight. As long as we can pay the bills with what comes in, I suppose for now we'll just stick with what we've got.

Also dang, nice job on scoring that username 😎

That depends! You can run an instance on an old PC for just yourself and some friends for next to nothing, but a bigger instance with lots of traffic can easily climb to hundreds per month or more. No idea where we'll end up when things slow down, but the subreddits this server represent currently have more users than the entire Lemmy-verse 😅

The even less ethical solution is something alike SNWs "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" first servant kind of thing
OP- you are not on StarTrek.website. You're on feddit.de. When you scroll /c/Risa you are scrolling a "copy" on feddit.de.
I assure you we are fully functional.
EDIT: FWIW I checked /c/Risa on feddit.de and thumbnails loaded fine ...maybe try clearing your browser cache?

We've been targeted too by what's probably a couple of script kiddies trying to brute force their way into our server. Not exactly a DDOS but a similar effect. Just had to remodulate the shields a few times.

Just Watched the First Episode of Voyager and I Get the Hype, Regarding Janeway, Now
I…don’t know that there’s much of any real point to this post. I don’t know a lot of people who watch Trek and wanted to share
Literally the point of this entire instance :)

The only perk we had in mind thus far was some user flair (whenever that inevitably gets invented). But you make a great point. Still getting used to this egalitarian perspective.

StarTrek.website now has an "old reddit" style desktop experience viewable at old.startrek.website!

I really considered something like tos., prequel. or even just reddit. but "old" gets the point across best.

FWIW I'd be interested in discussing hosting them on startrek.website if anyone here has a connect.
