Canada announces dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs, $7.5B in support for workers, businesses

Here's the Canadian Government's "Complete list of U.S. products subject to counter tariffs"

https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/programs/international-trade-finance-policy/canadas-response-us-tariffs/complete-list-us-products-subject-to-counter-tariffs.html

Effective September 8, 2026

The new targeted counter tariffs are concentrated in sectors such as steel and aluminum, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics, and electronics. In certain sectors, such as steel and aluminum, existing counter-tariffs will increase from 25 per cent to 50 per cent to match U.S. rates.

Other existing counter-tariffs, including against U.S. autos, will also continue to apply.

It's hard to navigate through that paginated list of items but I found wine, beer and spirits are being tariffed at 25%.

So one of the demands from the US was to stop the provincial alcohol boycotts and instead they end up with new tariffs for the few provinces not boycotting US alcohol (Alberta, Saskatchewan).

Even though US booze is still available for sale in Saskatchewan sales are down 40%. With the upcoming tariffs they are likely to decrease more:

Read Mark Carney's full speech after trade talks with the U.S. collapsed

After his speech Mark Carney took questions from reporters. I'll summarize the first few questions and his responses along with video timestamp.

https://www.cpac.ca/headline-politics/episode/pm-carney-speaks-to-media-after-suspension-of-canada-us-trade-talks?id=6b77d2c2-d09d-47fb-9bf1-7c88f3c2445c

@23:07 What specific last minute changes made the deal untenable?

  • level and scope of the tariffs for the auto industry with no tariff rollback for medium and heavy duty trucks
  • veto over Canada's ability to make trade deals with other nations
  • restrict protections on language and culture

@25:55 Was Howard Lutnick's involvement in the last days an impediment to getting a deal?

  • That's a question for the US administration
  • I take responsibility along with my cabinet for decisions of the Canadian government
  • I will say the Canadian team was united and working together - I can't say that for the US side

@29:40 What's your message for those who will become collatoral damage?

  • many are small/medium companies and have been top of mind. They are why we tried so hard to get a deal but not at any price.
  • We are going to hit back via tarrif protection where we can where it's relevant for some of those industries
  • We will do whatever it takes to support these businesses for as long as it takes, beyond the life of this administration, we will provide details in a few days

The demands of the US as part of the now unsigned trade agreement.

Negotiation details are intentionally kept private about what concessions and what was tentatively agreed to.

Here's a video from the Saturday morning Aug 22 press conference from Mark Carney the day after the negotiations were suspended:

At @23:07 he was asked What specific last minute changes made the deal untenable? Paraphrasing his response was:

  • level and scope of the tariffs for the auto industry with no tariff rollback for medium and heavy duty trucks
  • veto over Canada’s ability to make trade deals with other nations

I had created a new user on lemmy.dbzer0.com and subscribed to some bot communities mirrored from reddit via lemmit.online before it shutdown. The experience was underwhelming but it did lessen my need to use reddit as a social media app for discovery.

Jeff Bezos reportedly launches new AI startup with himself as CEO

The name prometheus is already in use by an open source monitoring project:

https://prometheus.io/

They are both in the computer field so there is some chance for confusion. Especially if the Prometheus monitoring project has some AI capabilities then that would strengthen the case for a trademark naming conflict.

Apple Inc, the computer company, had to settle and pay Apple Corps (the Beatles record label) money to settle trademark rights for the Apple name when Apple got into music business:

Trump threatens to block opening of new bridge between Detroit and Windsor

The CBC is sane-washing this word salad post:

https://trumpstruth.org/statuses/36617

As everyone knows, the Country of Canada has treated the United States very unfairly for decades. Now, things are turning around for the U.S.A., and FAST! But imagine, Canada is building a massive bridge between Ontario and Michigan. They own both the Canada and the United States side and, of course, built it with virtually no U.S. content. President Barack Hussein Obama stupidly gave them a waiver so they could get around the BUY AMERICAN Act, and not use any American products, including our Steel. Now, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just “take advantage of America!” What does the United States of America get — Absolutely NOTHING! Ontario won't even put U.S. spirits, beverages, and other alcoholic products, on their shelves, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so and now, on top of everything else, Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China — which will eat Canada alive. We’ll just get the leftovers! I don't think so. The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup. The Tariffs Canada charges us for our Dairy products have, for many years, been unacceptable, putting our Farmers at great financial risk. I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve. We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset. The revenues generated because of the U.S. Market will be astronomical. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

He thinks Canadians are so concerned about the threat that China has for "ICE Hockey" that we must surrender to his demands!?

Trump says he's terminating trade negotiations with Canada over Ontario anti-tariff ad

A lot has happened today after Trump's tirade. Ontario's Premier Doug Ford announced he would be suspending this Ad Campaign after consulting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney:

https://www.ctvnews.ca/toronto/politics/queens-park/article/doug-ford-says-hell-pause-anti-tariff-ad-that-infuriated-trump-as-of-next-week-but-will-still-show-it-during-world-series/

Manitoba's Premier Wab Kinew has a short video in the same style as the ad where he supports this Ontario Ad Campaign. It's a well done quick response:

https://xcancel.com/WabKinew/status/1981753253055361219

I think the Ontario Ad is very well done and I'm glad to see a NDP Premier supporting a Conservative Premier on this and a Conservative Premier publicly supporting a Liberal Prime Minister. Canada is uniting and Trump is unhappy.

Ontario’s plan to ban bike lanes is ripped from the business lobby’s wish list

Cross posted to https://lemmy.ca/c/fuckcars

Doug Ford and his supporters talk about "the war on cars". So on one side of this war we have cars. Who's on the other side of this war? I think it's a war between cars and people and unfortunately Doug is fighting on the cars side against people.

Some Alberta separatists embrace the idea of becoming the 51st American state

That article was painful to read about some people's lack of critical thinking skills. There exist people who believe only Donald Trump can save them from the Epstein class of global elites!!?? 🤯

When the separatist leaders were meeting (plotting) with the American State Department in a SCIF didn't they say they would get $500 Billion if Alberta became independent? And then in the future if an independent Alberta would join the USA it would make more sense for Alberta to become an American Territory rather than a State?

So their end goal is to become a future Norte Rico.

Trump says he's pausing 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods for 3 days

Here's the post in question without having to directly go to truthsocial:

https://trumpstruth.org/statuses/41006

I have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL! The great Keystone XL Pipeline, long ago killed by Sleepy Joe Biden, may be awoken from the grave! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP
