What other less-toxic system could work instead of karma?
That real question is, what problem are we trying to solve? Then we can go from there.

Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?
Greed. It's all driven by greed. It's not just social media companies either. My best guess to why it's happening now.. The boomers are aging out and want to take every last bit they can squeeze out before they retire/die.

The Tetris manual had names for the blocks

It seems odd that a Russian would name blocks after US states.

Lemmy's total users surged from 156k to 240k in a single day today! What caused the jump?

May also have to do with reddit users wondering why all their favorite subs are now full of pictures of John Oliver and Wales (which are newer acts of protest).

ISP not offering port forwarding anymore
I would cancel the new ISP on principal. Fool me once shame on you, if they fool me twice it's on me. I wouldn't give them the opportunity to fuck me again.

How the beehaw defederation affects us
Reply in thread
I just did this. Beehaw acting stupid? Ok now I'm on lemmy.world. Just had to subscribe to the communities I like (a task that will later become trivial I'm sure). Only took a few minutes and I can move on with my day. Back reddit when the admins act stupid everything's fucked. I like it here

YSK: Your Lemmy activities (e.g. downvotes) are far from private
Back in my day everyone knew that once you put something on the internet it's there forever to be seen by all. Has everyone already forgotten this? This is nothing new and in fact the way it's always been! Now get off my lawn!

The best way to protest against reddit is simply to not interact with Reddit
On July 1st my reddit usage will be zero. Until then I take a peek once a day or two to post http://join-lemmy.org where appropriate.

I made the mistake of checking Reddit (using my last few days of Apollo) and came across a complaint about Lemmy that flabbergasted me

I'm happy to have people like that stay on reddit. They can stagnate along with the dying platform and their stupid round buttons.

Which proprietary software do you prefer over their open-source alternatives, and why?
As much as I dislike Adobe, Photoshop is something I can't get away from.

Next they'll be wondering why everyone's pirating the previous version.

Discussion: What makes your build unique?
My build doesn't have a PSU. Instead it has a voltage regulator. I live in an off-grid RV so my PC runs off a battery bank. There is no AC/DC conversion.

Opened Jerboa this morning and now it just immediately crashes
Reply in thread
The incoming masses aren't going to understand any of that. They're going to install it off the Play Store, have it crash and say "fuck this lemmy bullshit" before going right back to reddit.

Why did you choose your instance?
I chose beehaw. I chose wrong. So now I'm on lemmy.world and nothing was lost 😎

Is it really mandatory in some countries to have this on a RV?
I have the most unique looking RV ever. It's all white. I've never seen another one like it.

Google sucks now at giving me information. It seems like now it just gives me products.
