I got permabanned from /r/canada on Reddit for promiting Lemmy and the fediverse.
Well, it's /r/Canada, which is just a right winged mod-controlled shit hole. All the progressives went to /r/onguardforthee a long time ago.

Conservative MP Says He Trusts Porn Companies Won’t Leak Digital IDs of Canadians Who Visit Porn Websites
Does no one remember the Ashley Madison leaks including .gc.ca emails?

Blocking Pornhub access in Canada an option, owners say. Here’s why
Reply in thread
There's a HUGE lobbying effort to convince the people in power that this is a good idea. Lots of tech-surveillance companies bidding for this to go through, so everyone is forced to use their services. You think identity theft is bad now? Wait until you need to put your ID on the internet and that gets leaked.

The Canadian conservatives are in bed with the AfD. They hang out. https://newsie.social/@LALegault/111797431037370877
One of the people in that photo is Leslyn Lewis, who ran for the leadership of the federal conservative party the last time around and was touted as "a moderate". Hahaha.

Growing Up Trans | The Walrus
This was a tough read. In a supposedly affirming article, why would you mention the 88% detransition success rate multiple times when you're going to bury the fact that the study has methodological flaws at the very bottom of the article in tiny footnotes?
Do trans people not face enough systemic barriers?

It's that same sovereign nation's acting chief asking for a DNA test. It's between them now.

Pharmacare not the top health priority for most Canadians: survey
I'm lucky enough to not be on regular medication anymore, but some of my as-needed meds cost $140 without insurance. It's pretty steep.
Layoffs are a thing. Do people just die if they can't afford their meds? I know several people who are staying in their soul crushing jobs because of the benefits. Precarious contract work and part time workers don't get benefits.
We need pharmacare for all.

What is the most poignant thing someone has said to you when they were close to the end of their life?
"This is my favourite Indian restaurant." It has always been my favourite too. I think of John every time I go there. He was old, but passed away suddenly.
It's weird how the strangest things like this stick with you.

What if reddit joins race of services joing fediverse?
If they did that, Reddit would just be an aggregator app of the Fediverse with different communities acting as a new subreddit. The difference would be that they'd have ads and algorithms.
On the Fediverse side, it'd be like having a lemmy.ml with 1000x the traffic and activity. We probably have to defederate to keep up with the traffic and the trolling.
On the plus side, 3rd party apps will be back baybee!

Get paid to*. This is labour and we're all exploited.
Companies like this often hire external consultants to do the layoffs. They literally have no skin in the game.

When/how do you think capitalism will be defeated?
When we start talking to each other again without paid influence.
The troubles facing us all, middle class and below, are the same troubles. We need to practice working together locally to build something bigger before major movements are likely to work out. How do we rebuild community nonprofit hubs?

New reality for summer day camps: possible disruptions due to air quality
2 decades ago, I was working in city summer camps. Every time there was a smog alert, we had to keep all the kids inside. Every time there was a heat alert, they weren't allowed to run around.
So on the glorious days with heat and smog alerts, you're supposed to somehow plan fun for 10-15 kids from 9-4 without running or going outside. There were not enough classrooms to keep all the kids in arts and crafts. Also, no running in the gym. Do this for days in a row.
I don't miss that job.

What's behind the problems with Canada's international student program?
Does this not say it all? "The report estimates that students from India alone will provide Ontario colleges with $2 billion in operating revenue for the 2023-2024 school year. That's slightly more than those colleges receive from the provincial government."
