Darmok and Jalad… at Tanagra

cross-posted from: https://quokk.au/c/chevron7/p/1077889/darmok-and-jalad-at-tanagra

A few things crossing together here to make this joke:

  • The bulk of this is from Stargate SG-1 S4E8 "The First Ones", notably Daniel having difficulty understanding this alien who he calls "Chaka"
    • He calls the alien that name simply because that is a phrase he hears this alien say a bunch
  • This interaction is similar to one of the most well-known scenes from all of Star Trek (Star Trek: The Next Generation S5E2 "Darmok") in which Picard has difficulty understanding an alien who keeps saying the word "Shaka" a bunch.
  • In Stargate SG-1 S6E8 "The Other Guys", a couple characters argue about Star Trek. Notably, the character who says this "altar of Roddenberry" line is portrayed by John Billingsley, who is best known for his portrayal of Dr. Phlox in Star Trek: Enterprise.
    • Gene Roddenberry is the creator of Star Trek

O'Near!

  • Stargate SG-1 S1E1 "Children of the Gods"
  • Titanic (1997)

In case it's not obvious, the joke here is about how the way that Skaara pronounces the word "O'Neill" sort of sounds like "O'Near".

Bonus: An old post with a similar joke. I was able to scrounge up this image's project file to use as the starting point when making the image above.

Scorched Heart

cross-posted from: https://quokk.au/c/chevron7/p/1112170/scorched-heart

  • Stargate SG-1 S4E9 "Scorched Earth"
  • Star Trek: Enterprise S4E22 "These Are the Voyages..."

I would love to increase the volume of their dialog, but then you would hear the original "music" that I am trying to cover up here. I tried the technique of finding a surround sound rip of the episode with multiple channels of audio and isolating just the dialog channel, but unfortunately the dialog is on the same channel as the "music". If anyone has advice on how to isolate the dialog and/or remove the music, please let me know! Or if you want to make an attempt at just doing it yourself so I can stick the dialog in this video, that would be appreciated as well.

EDIT: I remembered how there were complaints about how cheap and lazy the Blu-ray releases were and how there was definitely a lot more love and care that went into the DVD releases. I found a DVD rip of that episode, and the surround sound audio is definitely better! The dialog and the "music" are indeed on different channels there like you would expect. I used that audio in the video now, and I think it is much better with that dialog actually audible!

Nitepunk, Silcrow, josh pan - Ether (2026)

What does this community think of Audiomack links like this? I have never heard of this platform, but it came up a couple times recently when searching specific tracks. Apparently it is not a new platform, but it is certainly new to me: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audiomack

It seems to operate fine for me. And as long as the track does not require an Audiomack Plus subscription (because it seems that some tracks do), I think it is alright to share the links here. You can listen to the track in full without having to log in or anything.

But I want to hear from actual users. Does anyone have opinions about that site? Anything nefarious that I am not aware of? If I find a particular track on both SoundCloud and Audiomack, which link would you rather me post here?

A bunch of miscellaneous behind-the-scenes stuff

While watching a bunch of behind-the-scenes videos, I got inspired to make a few reaction GIFs and whatnot. Note that these behind-the-scenes videos were usually around 360p or so, so don't expect the usual Blu-ray quality GIFs that I am known to create.

Knocked down by a woman

An additional layer to this joke here is that they are clearly discussing the events of "Birthright", which is an episode that Christopher Judge wrote. He is obviously playing up a bit here where he is trashing the script that he himself had written.

JUDGE: Wait wait wait... She knocks Teal'c down?
SHANKS: Yeah!
JUDGE: Teal'c doesn't get knocked down by a woman!
SHANKS: She's not really a woman. I mean, she was a woman, and then she became a man, and then she became a woman again. It's kind of like--
JUDGE: But Teal'c gets knocked down? I haven't gotten knocked down in seven years. Teal'c is a man who does not bend to little-- she's wearing, what, some little armor? Some little skimpy armor? So, now, all of the sudden, Teal'c isn't Teal'c anymore?! He's lost the entire essence of his character?! This is slack! Twattle!
SHANKS: She's really hot, though.
JUDGE: [pause] Who's playing her?
SHANKS: Jolene Blalock.
JUDGE: Okay, so when do we shoot that?
SHANKS: Next week. She'll be almost buck naked.
JUDGE: Okay.

That bit was much better in video form with that good comedic timing that you can't really get in text or meme form like this.

Lucky me!

Amanda Tapping talks about getting to work with the attractive Richard Dean Anderson

This is, you know, a little aside here, but... I saw him for the first time this season-- uh, we'd been away on hiatus for three months, and I was coming around the parking lot, and I saw him, and I forgot how damn handsome he is. And I was disarmed for a moment. Which surprised me, after four years, that I could turn a corner and go "[gasp] Oh yeah, I work with him. Lucky me!"

This is the best show!

It's gonna knock your socks off

It's pathetic

Tapping brings up the fact that all of Sam's romantic interests die.

Whiny little bitch

Michael Shanks has some thoughts on what makes Daniel a distinct character.

Evil laugh

You people are crazy!

Judge remarks on the enthusiastic fans he meets at conventions.

Bonus random still reaction shot from Amanda Tapping

Tapping demonstrates an over-the-top reaction she had made in front of a green screen which she was told would be replaced with something that her character finds amazing.

[Help] Old plugin not working

I have this simple old plugin that is not working with modern versions of GIMP. I absolutely had this working in GIMP 2.x or whatever, but it is not working in GIMP 3.2. When running GIMP from the terminal, it prints out the error messages, and it seems that the issues with this plugin are mostly something to do with the manifest/metadata sort of info at the end of the script.

I have tried reading the documentation about plugins and making small edits to the script to resolve those errors, but I just cannot seem to get it to work. Can anyone help me edit this plugin in a way that makes it work with GIMP 3.2?

Another request is to add to the script to also add guides around the perimeter of the canvas. Which I assume should be simple, just adding something like

(gimp-image-add-vguide img 0)
(gimp-image-add-vguide img 100)
(gimp-image-add-hguide img 0)
(gimp-image-add-hguide img 100)
