I wonder if it's running some sort of "split release" cycle, where the KDE environment updates are delayed, but kernel and graphics drivers are rolling.

Yeah, barring any uncommon glitches, KDE has been the smoothest experience I've ever had. Especially since they've ironed out KDE 6's quirks with Wayland.
