Nah, there are still a lot protesting, they just know that if they don't do things a certain way they'll be replaced with bootlickers. Pics, gifs, aww, interestingasfuck, iOS, wellthatsucks- all are bringing attention to the admin's bullshit while technically doing as admins asked.

Are some instances/communities closed off from others?

So the answer to your original question is yes, some instances are closed off from others, but you didn't mess anything up. Instance A can "defederate" from Instance B, which makes it so that users of either instance cannot see or interact with content or users from the other instance. This is unilateral- even if Instance B does not defederate Instance A, it is still blocked from seeing or interacting with Instance A.

However, with regards to your later questions, you didn't mess anything up. It's simply that federation is not retroactive. When the first person from Instance A subscribes to something from Instance B, the two instances are then federated, and content begins being shared from that point forward. It does not retroactively add old content from Instance B to Instance A. For now, it matters relatively heavily, as instances are being federated constantly, even though the content flow is somewhat light. As content flow increases and new instances begin to stabilize, it will matter less. As time goes on, the content "before federation" will be vastly outweighed by the content "after federation".

This is all somewhat compounded by the fact that lemmy instances are absolutely slammed right now. Kbin.social had to defederate entirely for a while just to keep from crashing. Give it time for the spike to stabilize and it will work more smoothly.

Defederation with Instances that Allow Loli and Shota

Personally, I joined this instance because it hadn't defederated anything. It leaves the power to us, the users, to decide what we do or don't want to see, rather than an admin. Defederating goes against the principle of free speech, as loli/shota content, while most find it distasteful, is not illegal, at least in the US, and so it is up to the user if they want to see it or not. I'm aware that "free speech" is a loaded phrase nowadays, but it is a principle I personally believe in quite heavily. The users can decide what they want to see or not. I believe defederation should only be used for explicitly illegal content.

Yes and no. It is true that going to reddit to troll reddit benefits reddit in the short term, but I think it's harmful in the long term. By making /r/pics, /r/gifs, and /r/aww John Oliver themed, /r/wellthatsucks becoming vacuum themed, and /r/interestingasfuck and /r/iOS becoming essentially unmoderated, it is making those communities ultimately pointless, irritating users away from the site, and raising awareness. John Oliver even tweeted about it and provided dozens of pictures for their use, and it's likely at this point that LWT will do something on the situation when the writer's strike is over. I've only gone to reddit to vote in the troll polls- I don't think that's the kind of engagement reddit actually wants at this point.

Going back to Reddit feels bad

I'm not on an instance with no downvotes, as I do think they have SOME purpose (though you're right that it is usually a bit of a disagree-so-shut-up button rather than anything else), but I agree with the rest. The content here is certainly slower. On reddit, I could just refresh the main page and have dozens of new posts to interact with- here, not so much. I don't think that's a bad thing, though. I still get my mindless scrolling when I'm poopin or something like that, but I'm spending a lot less time online than I did. I'm reading more, I'm working on my novels, I'm WAY more productive at work. I used RiF exclusively on my phone, and so I decided pretty soon after the API announcement that I was done. All the protest and reddit's hilariously mismanaged response has done has cemented my resolve.

So how long until they kick legacy mods from r/startrek and reopen?

Reply in thread

Yes, but reddit can undo it. A little while back, /r/KotakuInAction was nuked by the head mod, who had not been an active moderator for years. He deleted all content and set the subreddit to private. However, since his actions were malicious and the rest of the mods could only watch since he was above them in the mod order, reddit admins removed him from the mod list and restored the subreddit to before the mod went crazy. This is likely the same logic they'll use to reopen the subs, only it doesn't work since it's not the work of one rogue mod, but the mod team as a whole.
