How do we reduce toxicity on the Fediverse, and on the wider internet?

Obviously, the internet has always been a toxic place, (the phrase "flame war" has been around for decades,) but it seems to have gotten so much worse over the last few years. I used to think decentralization of the internet would fix the worst of it, but Lemmy seems to have gotten worse alongside the rest of internet culture, proving me wrong. How do we fix/improve this culture of toxicity?

Generative AI isn't going anywhere, and *will* replace a number of jobs.

Generative AI has a number of uses that are already widespread, and I don't see going anywhere. Things like clipart and stock art, and initial contact customer support. AI automates these jobs, making it far, far cheaper than hiring a human to do the same job. It only takes one higher-end PC to do a job that a human would have had to be paid for. The economic incentive is already there.

Furthermore, Generative AI is a genie thats been let out of the bottle, and I don't see ever being put back in. These models are just files, which have already been replicated and become widespread. Sure, progress may slow as the "We're making a general purpose AI." bubble bursts, but if these tools work, they'll continue to be developed, and people will continue to get better at manipulating or augmenting them. I don't see any reason that would stop generative AI from continuing to exist from this point forward.

Generative AI isn't going anywhere, and will replace a number of jobs.

Having a local, "age" flag used for filtering content isn't a bad idea.

With California's AB1043, this was on my mind, although wasn't specifically about that law. Generally, giving users more control is a good thing, esspecially when it means excluding potentially distressing or harmful content. In general, having filtering settings like this provides a way for users to pick and chose what they want to see. While I don't think an age value is the best way of implementing it, I do think it is likely to be better than having nothing at all.

So long as its only a local value, the only significant downside I see, is its use for fingerprinting and tracking. This is an issue, but being only one number, is relatively inspecific and unreliable. User agent strings provide far more data, and are far harder to manipulate meaningfully, for example. Furthermore, so long as its all managed locally, privacy focused software would also have the ability to either not provide the value, to use brackets in UI rather than a asking for a specific number, or to just use a default value, like 99. Given that, it seems like an age flag would be just another in a sea of fingerprinting methods, while the convenience and utility provided could be significant.

Ultimately, I feel like a series of boolean flags for different subject matters to filter would be better, but because an age value seems closer to being implemented, thats my focus.

So, having a local, "age" flag used for filtering content isn't a bad idea.

Three questions about California AB1043 C. 675

I'm obviously not a lawer, but I'm trying to wrap my head around California AB1043 C. 675. This isn't for legal advice, nor am I Californian, I'm just trying to make sure I understand the law and its implications.

  1. Under section 1798.501. (b) 4A, wouldn't this make collection of almost any system information illegal? Like, this seems like it would make something as simple as reading the user's chose theme illegal. I've got to be missing something, right?

  2. Since 1798.501. (b) 2A seems to require that developers that receive this age flag treat assume it is true, this would at least apply to CCPA, and California Civil Code, right? If so, wouldn't that mean that even an for an adult who uses this flag, sharing their data is illegal, and they are required to be given access to extra rights, like the right to delete your data?

  3. Would 1798.501. (b) 2A also apply to COPPA? I know this is state versus federal law, but are they allowed to, under state law, regard the age value as truthful and under federal law, not?

How would I improve Wifi consistency within my house?

I'm familiar with the absolute basics of networking, but very little surrounding wifi.

I'm current using the modem-router-AP provided by my ISP, along with a couple repeaters. This isn't working well, and in areas of my house further away from my main AP, packet loss is often around 20% - near unusable. How should I improve this?

I can run some wires (within reason), and have multiple spare routers-APs to work with. I can also buy something new off the shelf if needed, but don't want to spend more than I have to. What would be the approach I should use? Like, is there a particular type of extender I should be using, or can I use multiple routers as a mesh or something?

What peripherals (with customization) support Linux?

I have a bit of a weird setup that I've accumulated over the years. In my most recent attempt at breaking into Linux, this was my main barrier. In particular, I use a Corsair keyboard, a Razer Naga X mouse, and a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick. As it turns out, the mouse, and seemingly the other two, aren't compatible with Linux.

I don't have the money for replacements at the moment, but when I do, what brands/products should I be looking for, for similar functionality? I can give up some features, but essential to me is the ability to set up keyboard macros, and an MMO mouse with the ability to toggle DPI via the side buttons.

Which 40k books are the best?

I'm looking for something new to read, and am curious which books others liked. Personally, I haven't read many of the "main chronology" books, but I've enjoyed a lot of the one-offs.

Personally, my favorites so far would be Brutal Kunnin, and Assassinorum Kingmaker. Both have decent plot, well-written characters, and are fast paced enough for my short attention span.

I also enjoyed the rest of Mike Brooks's ork books, although none lived up to Brutal Kunnin due to the weaker plots and lack of variety, and I enjoyed Titanicus, but found that it struggled to depict the titan's scale, and it failed to close out the story after all the build up. Dead Men Walk also wasn't bad, and illustrated the setting well, but the plot and characters weren't very compelling.

I also read The Oubliette, but found that it fell very flat, unfortunately. Reading the author's comments on Reddit, I see what he was trying to achive, but it feels extremely rushed and underbaked after the first half.

I've also tried to read Eisenhorn and and Cadian Honour, but so far, have bounced off of both due to the slow start.

Has Canada's government done anything concrete to reduce dependence on the US since Trump took office? Maybe even since the first term?

I saw someone saying recently that Canada has made a huge shift away from the US. As someone Canadian, I haven't noticed anything beyond relatively minor individual decisions (IE, not going to the US as a tourist). I'd like to be wrong, but from my understanding, this is effectively nothing. Has there actually been any sort of large scale move away from US dependence?

How would I rebind my mouse buttons with a Razor Naga?

For years, I've used a Razor Naga with DPI switching on one of the side buttons, and for years before that, it was a Logitech G600. I've just installed Linux for the first time in a while only to realize Razor doesn't offer support, and Polychromatic doesn't offer button remapping.

Is there any way to rebind my mouse, or will I have to go back to Windows to keep using my mouse?

1Edit: plz send help fast. I am typing "1" into every window I open. I need rebind this before I break something.1

Edit21: Is there a way to bind a sensitivity toggle to the mouse button event more directly?

Edit 3: I've run out of time to work on this, so I'll need to install Windows for the time being. I might come back to it if I ever get a weekend free.
