Redditors, how do you like Lemmy?

How do you know something is developed with Rust?
Don't worry, the devs will tell you.

On Politics and Forking
The question at hand is whether it is moral to use a platform developed by someone who has committed acts which one deems immoral.
The platform is a tool, much as anything else is. The intent and message is what separate the use of tools. BeeHaw has an amazing intent and purpose. Creation or developer of the tools should not factor into using such.

update: Beehaw's update downtime was actually just now. oops.

Thanks for the recognition. We aren't a big silicon valley conglomerate, just a few people trying to make a better service for others.

Is lemm.ee actually shutting down?
I wish the best for the admin and mods of lemm.ee. I can attest to the frustration that is running any online community though, especially one built on/dependent on Lemmy. I am sorry to see you stepping out @[email protected] but hope you're doing alright otherwise. Was real nice bouncing ideas and changes off you in the past.

What game is improved the most by mods?
Definitely RimWorld. There's so many mods that improve the base game. From QoL mods that make you wonder why that isn't default in the vanilla game, to mods that complety overhaul the actual win condition. Just overall a really fun, replayability, frustrating game.
Use mods though. It'll make it better. Check out p-music mod while you're at it.

Which distro does Linus Torvalds use?

uses a version of Ubuntu's modified kernel, with the non-free code (binary blobs) removed.[8
Why not just Debian without non-free, at that point?

Was a result of too much fiddling. Attempting to gain even better performance from a bottleneck issue due to recent user influx. It was not an error in the Lemmy instance or Lemmy-UI but rather the web server front-end misconfiguration.

I want to move out from Ubuntu and use something else.
Debian proper. You'll have issues with any stylus on Linux. Not to say it won't work but may need more effort to get working.

only active mod for a small fan sub
That attachment is what they (Reddit) are counting on. It's your community, not Reddits; and they don't care. But you do... while admirable in itself, its being used against you.

Yes; configuration settings for the web server involving improving performance. Those settings have been changed back to the previous, non-issue ones. So this should not occur at this time, or again.

Improved performance!
Thanks! Been working on the caching and some other performance changes for Lemmy itself. Very glad to hear that those efforts are doing something. We'll see how it goes after the upgrade tomorrow!

Is it too early for a (21F) proposal to her? (23F)
Well, I heard a typical lesbianism first date involves a Uhaul. I don't think 3 yrs is too soon, if you're sure that's the person for you and you want to spend a life with. I'd say just be sure your partner feels the same way and you both have the same expectations before hurting yourself or another.

I hate time zones, especially when I'm stupid
Timezone programming sucks. The philosophy I got by is, to store/track/log everything in UTC. When it is displayed, then change the format to the local user timezone IF NEEDED. For example if it's like network device logs or security events, one timezone (UTC normally) should be used, not changed for every user. Convert the reverse for input from client, to back end.

What do you think of Hacker News?
I really like Hacker News for the most part. Commentary is well above the cesspool of the alien site. People are really knowledgeable and quick to share it. Sometimes there are comments that pop up from 'tech celebrities' too! Always awesome to see people like tptacek (Thomas Ptacek) or CliffStoll (yes, that one) sharing in the discussions there. Sometimes though, there is an echo chamber mentality where it seems everyone commenting is 'An American white male, making $300,000 annual salary + options'.
As a platform, I appreciate what the moderators do there to keep things on topic and following the guidelines like:
Be kind. Don't be snarky. Converse curiously; don't cross-examine. Edit out swipes.
