"Do better, instead of saying that you already are."

This is a post I made on my personal Fedi profile a while back and I thought it would be appreciated here. Because it occurs very frequently here too and it's something that any women expressing her experience with men on the internet has to deal with.

Here is the full text of the post, should you not want to visit the link:

CONTENT NOTICE: talking about cisgender men on fedi (and the internet as a whole)

This is gonna sound like a call out post, and... No, it really isn't. I'm not calling out anyone in particular. I've just seen it one too many times. The straw, the camel's back, yadiyada.

My cis dudes. I love you. I really do. But I'm tired of you going under women's post expressing their grievances about men, to explain how ashamed you are of other men. It's... It's tiring. Like, it's really fucking tiring. Because you don't realize that every time we make such a post there is at least one or two of you. Every time.

We don't care about you being not like the other guys. Yes, sure, are one of the good ones, whatever. Good boy and all that. But when you do this, not only do you not contribute anything to the discussion, you're actually adding to the problem. It's adding emotional labour to the women trying to explain themselves when really you should just stay quiet and listen.

Give a like. Boost the post, even. But you don't need to say anything, not to us. Call out other men in the responses that are probably trying to argue and ending up exactly proving her point. Do better, instead of saying that you already are.

"The rent you pay to exist in the world as a woman."

Found this post thanks to @[email protected] who posted it three years ago on her old timeline. Somebody boosted it on mine today and I knew I had to post it here.

⚠️ IMPORTANT REMINDER:

THIS IS A WOMEN ONLY COMMUNITY & SPACE

See "Rule 1: Women only...

Trans women are women, and transphobic or gender critical talk isn’t allowed. Anyone under the trans umbrella (e.g. non-binary, bigender, agender) is free to decide whether a women’s community is a good fit for them."

Venting about the misogyny this community constantly has to deal with.

So, my last post was a complete shit show. I had no idea it would get this much attention. Not necessarily happy that it did.

First off, to the moderation team, please accept this hug from this trans bunny girl right here. Because damn it, do you deserve it. I'm so sorry for what happened, I do kind of feel responsible and I'm worried that by posting this, I'm going to make things worse.

Second, it is astounding the amount of entitlement that so many men feel. In this thread, I've seen lots of dudes being offended but what was more striking was: A bunch of guys being told about the rule, AND DOUBLING AND SOMETIMES TRIPLING DOWN!

When I wrote this post, I was thinking of adding a huge: "Please read the rules before commenting, this is a women only space" and I didn't do it, I didn't want to overstep the boundaries of the moderation. I would change that, looking back.

You know what kills me about all of this? It's that, as a transfeminine bun, the typical trans-misogynistic shit being thrown my way is that I'm just a guy disguising myself as a woman to invade "real women" spaces, to which of course, the answer always is: Guys don't need to put in this much effort to invade women spaces, they just walk in like they own the place and it's enough.

This post was yet another perfect demonstration of that. And men can't understand, they just can't, because they don't go through it, they don't know what it's like, they never even have to think about it. Women are being excluded passively all over the internet, but the second there is a women only thing, we have guys constantly trying to brigade it and to destroy it because taking all the space already isn't enough.

A woman can't express herself online without being bombarded with reply guys telling her that she's wrong, that she's exaggerating, and don't forget the usual dudes insisting that they're part of the good ones. And god forbid if you're expressing your frustration in a way that might be a bit too generalizing or angry, because of course "#NotAllMen", a guy will say proving exactly that yes, it is all men. It's not hating an entire group, it's not being misandrist, it's just drowning in misogyny and being rightfully pissed off about it, but we can't even have that.

We're never allowed to be ourselves, we're never allowed to be vulnerable as women, we're never allowed to vent or be upset at the shit that we have to endure from men all the time, we just have to take it. All because the average dude's ego is both so enormous and so fragile that he can't accept that it's not about him, or even begin to understand that he might be the problem here when he's been repeatedly told that this is not a space for him.

It's incredibly disheartening. Because when it works, I love this community, it's a safe haven on the internet. But the second we dare to talk about more than: "I love being a girl!" and go into something along the lines of: "Misogyny is crushing to deal with", things spiral out of control and we have to deal with yet another stunning example of men barging in, seemingly desperate to prove the point.

In the beginning I said this:

I'm worried that by posting this, I'm going to make things worse.

You see this? This is exactly what I'm talking about.

I didn't write it to prove a point, I wrote it because I'm genuinely worried about this. Because I have to actively be careful about what I do, what I say, what I wear, what I show, as to not attract the ire of misogyny. All the time. It's always in the back of my mind, it's a never ending anxiety. It's something that men, even the most well meaning ones, can't and will never be able to understand. I just wish they'd be able to accept it and to believe us.

EDIT:

IT HAPPENED HERE AS WELL! We had a guy come in, knowing full well he was breaking the rule, but he wanted to share his "personal experience", his opinion. In other words, fucking mansplain to us why this keeps happening. He couldn't help himself, he just had to share his unsolicited opinion because he is just that important as a man. I have people asking me all the time why I only hang out with trans people and women, and it's simple: They respect my fucking boundaries!

I want more spaces that don't allow cis men. :/

Lately, I have been quite fed up with the amount of misogyny I've had to deal with online and in my life. So, I apologize in advance for the pent-up anger that is coming out in this post. But I just wanted to say that I am so happy that this space exists. It's quiet, there isn't a lot of activity on it, but it's just so much better.

Every time I find myself in a space where cis men are not allowed, I realize how much better it is. All the trans men I know are absolute sweethearts. They're wonderful. But every time, even the cis men that I know and love, I can't help but be exhausted by them, by all the space they're taking, the amount of energy I need to put in to cuddle their feelings. It really feels like men are 50% of the population and they're taking 90% of the space available.

I just made a joke to my girlfriend that what the world really need is a Minecraft server where cis men are not allowed, but for real, I would play the shit out of this. It sounds like such an amazing place to hang out in.

Because, if you would indulge me in my frustrations... I'm so done with cis dudes. As in, I'm done being patient and I'm done putting up with bullshit. I should never have to deal with in the first place. I'm so done with them acting as if they own every space I'm also in, as if I need an invitation and a man by my side to just be tolerated in it, which for me is most of what it's like to be a girl in gaming spaces, but it shouldn't be. I'm done having to justify and explain myself because dudebros are always convinced that because i'm a woman, I don't know shit, acting as if they are an authority on the things that I am living through every day, talking as if they know better than me, denying my experiences. And I'm done with – again, to go back to the thing that I mentioned about gaming spaces – men calling me slurs or just being fucking creepy as hell with me for what I am.

I'm sorry to say this, but every time I see a toxic community, every time I see a place that is just a Nazi haven or whatever the fuck, it's all men! All the time! It's not that women can't be Nazis or whatever, of course they can. Women can be fucking awful! I mean, there is a reason why the UK is nicknamed "TERF Island", you know? But that kind of shit is definitely the exception, not the rule.

I love cis men, I really do, but, and I hate to say this, for me to be able to keep loving them, I need moments and places where I can just fucking vent about how exhausting they are to be around. And getting that online is near impossible. I wouldn't be able to say or write any of this in a space where they were allowed. And I know that you know why I can't do that. I know that you know what it would turn into. We all know here what comes of poking this hornet's nest.

So I'm thankful for this space. I'm thankful for all of you in it. And I want more of them.

(depending on how this goes, I just want to say in advance that I'm sorry to the moderation.)

UPDATE: So with all the responses I got, I'm gonna be honest, I kinda deeply regret making this post and I don't think I'm gonna be active in this community anymore. I don't think I'm gonna be really active on this account much anymore either at all for that matter. I'm sorry that I made this post, I should have kept this to myself.

UPDATE 2: Nah, fuck that. I stand by everything I said.
