Audiences have always been interested in good storytelling. The reason the MCU took off was because it told good stories. The problem is that the stories have become too formulaic or half-baked.

People showed up for Deadpool and Wolverine, so the issue isn't about comic book movies.

EDIT: My comment about D&W isn't meant to hold it up as an example of good storytelling. As I said, the stories have become formulaic. My mentioning of it is meant to point out that many comic book movies succeed despite mediocre storytelling. You can't say "audiences are tired of comic book movies" when many are still clearly successful.

Everything is a fucking grift

I hear this a lot, and part of me understands the sentiment. But it's important to keep in mind that these are state level politicians, not national. Representing their districts is a part time job. Most of them have jobs like attorney, doctor, business owner employing other people, etc. To stay absent would mean not only leaving these responsibilities, but it's also leaving their spouses and kids. On top of that the state government started imposing $500/day fines. Then they sued and froze the accounts of Beto O'Rourke's fundraiser to help them meet their expenses (that was just overturned by a judge this afternoon).

When it became clear that other states were willing to redraw their maps to cancel out Texas's naked power grab, it changed the calculus. They achieved the objective of drawing attention to the issue and they got other states to commit to action so that even if Texas redraws the map, it won't matter on a national level. They've already paid significant personal cost. How much should they be expected to pay? Should their families/clients/patients/employees also suffer?

I don't know that there's a right answer. Maybe this is the sort of tough call that defines real rebellions from performative ones. I do think that it's easy to criticize from a distance because for most of us the principles and ideas are abstract. But for them the costs are already being felt in concrete ways.

I think what Bernie is saying is that for decades Dems have paid lip service to working class concerns while not actually doing much. In reality Dems have been much more beholden to corporate interests.

By the time these plans came out, too many working class folk were already disenfranchised. They saw a party that was vocal about social issues that frankly were not high on the list of priorities for most of them. They were more concerned that inflation was out of control and they could not afford basic expenses. Sure Trump was racist but at least prices were lower when he was in office, or so they would conclude. If he could bring prices down, they would go with him.

Basically Dems were just out of touch with the most important part of their base until it was too late.

Love this show and the books, especially the audiobooks narrated perfectly by Jefferson Mays. If you haven't checked out the books, you're missing out on some of the best sci-fi in ages. I love that they are set in a very unique time period in the future that we don't see a lot of: earth has colonized the solar system but interstellar travel is not possible. No warp drive or hyperspace. That means traveling from one planet to another can take months.

The show does such a great job of showing and explaining accurate space physics. No artificial gravity. You want gravity? Best we can do is engine-generated thrust.

All the characters have great arcs too. I was sad that the final three books were never adapted, but the way the books were written means that they can easily finish the series with a movie trilogy if they want.

James SA Corey started a new sci-fi series I am digging so far, The Captives War. VERY different from The Expanse but still fascinating

I'd pick Kelly over Shapiro, though admittedly I'm way more familiar with Kelly than Shapiro. Having two former AGs on the ticket seems redundant. America loves astronauts and Kelly has personal experience with the issue of gun violence. Any sympathy Trump tries to get with his assassination attempt can be immediately countered. "Oh, your ear was grazed? My wife was literally shot in the head and had to relearn basic tasks. But do go on..."

I love Bernie. I know he would have beat Trump in 2016. Both tap into populist sentiment, albeit on different sides of the political spectrum. The difference is Bernie wouldn't have any of the baggage that Trump brings with the racism, misogyny, incoherence, etc. he would have won easily. I weep for what would have been. He would have been a champion for the working class, not the charlatan that Trump is.

I think one thing that the Republicans did that Dems didn't is they let the people pick their candidate. It's that simple. They didn't care how unpolished he was, his lack of pedigree, anything. There was no ideological purity test. They duked it out in their primary and let the people decide. Something for the Dems to learn from.

I read elsewhere that they never sold it. I read the article but it seems to contradict itself. It says Costco "stopped selling" it, but it also quotes Costco as saying "Our position at this time not to sell mifepristone, which has not changed, is based on the lack of demand from our members and other patients, who we understand generally have the drug dispensed by their medical providers," (emphasis mine).

So either Reuters is wrong when it says they stopped selling, or Costco is lying when it says it's position never changed

Don't misunderstand, people. The key here isn't that it's hate speech. All kinds of unpopular views are protected by the First Amendment. This is why you can still see Trump supporters waving Nazi flags in parades. If it was just because it was deemed hate speech, well then we should all be worried because Trump's government is now saying that anyone who preaches hate against America is subject to deportation.

The key is that it happened at a school event. The FA doesn't apply to non-students at school events if students are the target of speech meant to harass or demean. If this had happened at a club soccer game as opposed to a school event they would have been protected.

So if they want to use their influence for political ends, why are they tax exempt?
