Your task is to blow a job interview in the first 30 seconds. What do you do?

Reply in thread

That one depends on the job. Some managers will love to exploit your inclination to hyper focus on solving problems and following the rules. They won't ask you to work unpaid after hours but if you want to they won't protest... Doing a third of the work for a team of six people? That's great, but your next performance review will include the criticism that you're not as social as your coworkers because you're too busy doing the job.

[WP] A gang of wizards raid a local fast food chain.

The chaotic council of wizards leisurely strolled into the McBurger Jr franchise, with several of them snickering and smiling wide.

Alex looked up from behind the counter, exhausted from his ten hour shift.

"Um, okay..."

"He can't see or hear us," Polidorus the Esoteric laughed. "He just sees the door opening like we're ghosts."

The wizards proceeded to walk behind the counter and grab all the current drive-thru orders. One of them stole a fry from a child in the dining area, who just watched silently as the fry disappeared into the wizard's mouth.

"Graymund, remember to take as many sauce packets as possible."

"This is brilliant!" Rediskrad shouted. "Being invisible and unheard is going to make procuring supplies for our rituals so much easier. We don't have to shop for discounts or hold magic mushroom bake sales anymore! Money is no longer a barrier to greatness!"

Alex turned to Rediskrad and looked him directly in the eye.

"Do you mind not shouting in my ear?"

"You can hear us?"

"Yeah, of course."

"You can see us too?"

"Yeah. Didn't you notice that you could see and hear each other?"

"Well, sure, but..."

As the last of the wizards was pushed into the police car, he turned to Polidorus.

"I told you to remember to cast the spell before we left!"

Playing it safe, the scientist decided to set the time machine to go back just five minutes into the past for his first test.

In case anyone else was wondering:

"Earth orbits around the sun at a speed of 67,100 miles per hour (30 kilometers per second)."

So 9000 kilometers away in 5 minutes.

But then the milky way spins at around 200-250 km/s, so there's that displacement also.

If a time machine only travels through time and not space, would parts of the time machine travel through time at miniscule differences such that the power source is hundreds of kilometers away from the controls and thus the machine wouldn't work beyond the initial activation?

Any 911 operators or police on here? What was the dumbest or funniest reason someone has called?

About 18 years ago when I was a dispatcher, I had someone call 911 to report their drug dealer stole their laptop because they couldn't afford to pay for the drugs they wanted to purchase. I asked them a few times if they would like to file a police report that states that they intentionally purchased illegal drugs. They didn't seem to understand the angle of the question and we asked them to stay where they were so a deputy could go out and take a statement.

YSK that giving kids a laptop doesn't improve their academic performance.

I tend to find that any headline summarizing a study will never be capable of all the nuance necessary to understand what the study actually revealed. If a single student improved their academic performance with the provision of a laptop, the headline as phrased is inaccurate. It also looks like Peru has underperformance issues with education in general and with teachers not being digitally literate. I'd be curious to see the study replicated in other countries. The study noted that access to the laptops did improve computer literacy among the students, which is becoming more relevant for academic pursuits and even just general functioning in society, so I'd also be curious to see what might have happened to a control group with no access to the technology. Maybe the access allowed the students to maintain the average rather than have lower academic performance due to the lack of access...? As virtually every study I've ever read will typically say, "more research is needed..."

what do you use to add weight?

When wanting more weight, but not wanting to add anything extra to the print, I use modifiers in Prusaslicer to add an internal shape that I set to 100% infill in contrast to the rest of the print. So if I want a weighted bottom to prevent a printed object from tipping over, just throw the modifier in with 100% infill at the bottom of the model before printing.

DnD of Musts

I feel like this is too general. I'd want to customize based on specific IRL traits or jobs or hobbies.

You feed and befriend crows? Druid with animal skills focus.

You're some kind of a carpenter, engineer, craftsman? Artificer.

Phlebotomist's assistant? Vampire thrall backstory.

Retail salesperson? Bard with psychic damage skills.

Live in a basement? Homebrew troll obviously.

Software and coding? Sounds like arcane languages and warlock pacts to me.

Yeah, I'm prone to go down rabbit holes looking at the etymology and origin of related words for hours. Latin was one of my favorite classes in high school. It's great for world building and stylizing prose when writing fiction.

Sometimes the etymology is just weird because the current meaning is from an abbreviation of a phrase and the roots don't make sense in isolation, such as perfidious, from the roots per fidem "through faith" but its meaning is from the larger phrase "deceiving through faith."

Dracula could have played with Nintendo

I feel like you'd need to be specific about what kind of pirate existed in the late 19th century. It's not the stereotype of the Caribbean pirate from the Golden Age. There were regional pirates near China and India. But pirates in the west in the late 19th century were mostly suppressed. You might have a former privateer from the Civil War still alive in the 1890s and he might be in his mid 40s at the youngest.

How do I make this work? Or should I give up?

Unfortunately, with the factors you mentioned, you might want to cut your losses because I'm guessing you'll just become more frustrated if you try to get more out of it. There is a learning curve for 3D printing, especially with older models like the one you have. The quality of printers has vastly improved for beginners in the last six years. Without the ability/funds to upgrade to a newer printer, what you have may be more trouble than it's worth because it would likely take a lot of effort and learning to get it working decently. You might also need new filament since anything old is likely brittle after absorbing moisture over the years.

That said, I wouldn't give up on 3D printing entirely. It can be a great experience. Maybe find a local makerspace that can help you or that has 3D printers of their own to learn on.
