Not everyone has the skills, competency, time, or cash on hand to manage their own repairs. There's also other advantages to renting. Most obviously is the fact that it's a lot easier to move - signing a new lease is so much less of a hassle than dealing with all of the things involved with selling and buying a home. This was somewhat mitigated by having equity, but right now it can take 5-10 years to have positive equity in a home.

Don't get me wrong, the article is absolutely dystopian, dude's paying 1400 a month for a shoebox. There is a lot that's ridiculous about his situation, but to throw out all of the actual advantages renting can have is as disingenuous of a take as if I were to say buying is a gamble.
