A new study from the University of Iowa suggests businesses do better in states that legalize medicinal marijuana.

Professor Tong Yao says it’s not likely the result of offices full of potheads helping their employers be more productive. Mr. Yao, a professor of finance, said legalizing medical marijuana instead sends a signal about the state’s culture that attracts creative and productive people to live and work there.

“In addition to providing a host of medical benefits, legalizing marijuana can also give the state a ‘cool image,'” Mr. Yao said, in a Tippie College of Business blog post. “Highly skilled and creative human capital is especially appreciative of open, new, and divergent policies, such as legalized medical marijuana, and that can potentially help states retain and attract more productive and creative workers.”

Mr. Yao said the study looked only at states that legalized marijuana for medical use and not for recreational use.

Mr. Yao is the Keith L. Cook Professor of Finance at the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business.

The Study

Mr. Yao looked at the financial results of more than 13,000 publicly traded companies between 2001 and 2022 and found that when states legalized medical marijuana:

• Corporate valuation increased in 21 of 38 states. * Gross profit per employee and gross sales per employee each increased by more than $8,000.
• Patents increased by 10.4% across all 38 states, and the economic value of those patents increased by 22%, as states with legalized medical marijuana were more likely to retain existing inventors and attract new inventors from other states who are productive and create more value.

He said party politics seemed to play little role in the results, as the findings applied to states regardless of whether they had a Democrat or Republican governor.

Mr. Yao said that California, the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996, had a burst of creativity and business growth in the years that followed. The effect has become weaker over time, however. As more states legalize weed for medical purposes, the benefits are less dramatic.

Mr. Yao’s study, “Do firms get high? The impact of medical marijuana legalization on firm performance and corporate innovation,” was published in the journal Financial Management. His co-authors are Jue Wang, a former Tippie doctoral student now at Nankai University in China, and Shagun Pant of the University of Illinois.

Abstract

“We find that state-level medical marijuana legalization has a positive financial impact on firms, likely by affecting firms’ human capital. Firms headquartered in marijuana-legalizing states receive higher market valuations, improve employee productivity, and increase innovation. Exploiting inventor mobility data, we directly test the human capital channel and find that states legalizing marijuana are able to retain inventors who become more productive and recruit more innovative talents from out of state.”

Only thing I love more'n weed is a good view

...so I don't get high anymore. Y'know, I just smoke and smoke and smoke, and y'know, I don't get high anymore. That day we run outta weed and money at the same time is going to be hell, but therein, that's something God had me solve in learning to juggle after maybe my third acid trip. Having developed several arts now in present after having been a worthless man in my early twenties - a product of chronic masturbation and an addiction to video games (dopaminergic pathways, amirite?) - I can say with certainty that I never have nothing.

This was part of an idea I came up with on that acid trip, which wasn't even the most fateful of psychedelic trips I've had, it just made something click, but this idea of never having nothing comes from my perception of how the world is growing increasingly more chaotic as we move into the future. A new technology or discovery or insight into reality could suddenly cause society to lurch in a brave new direction. The rate of change itself is changing; that's what I perceived in holy introspection. And I was having enough problems adapting to the world I was already in, being maladpted by bad parenting and personal choices enhanced by the isolation of neurodivergence, so I thought it wiser to be able to generate a meal on a whim than to bet the farm on having some salary one day.

So, juggling came, as did writing, to expand into the broader performance arts, which I now do here on Lemmy from multiple accounts. This is the one where I'm playing my 💯% authentic, autobiographical character. It's an exaggerated caricature of my past self that I use to market wisdom about philosophy, spirituality, and mental health skills to help past versions of me heal n self-actualize, catcher in the rye style. Likewise, I solved that lonely isolation problem for myself.

And this is where we get to the purpose of this post. It does not matter if you smoke a pound of weed a day, what matters is what you're doing every day. When I learned to juggle, I was getting giraffe pussy levels high every day. And my God is it fun to juggle while zoning out like that. It tickles my schizoautismo brain just perfectly. So, I personally recommend giving juggling a try, cuz who knows when you'll need to make five bucks in ten minutes of juggling on the side of a busy intersection, but the message is, if nothing else, fucking doodle or something while you're a little stoned or high as balls. Something you enjoy passively doing.

That ish can grow into something that can pay for your weed by itself even if you don't see how from your current vantage point. You create and strengthen neural connections when you do something, and the cool thing about weed is that it naturally impairs linear thinking in a way that promotes the brain to try and make lateral connections, which will manifest alternate and novel ways of thinking, which bestows greater perspective of what you can do with your art.

I've got an older PC that I'm upgrading and going to turn into a NAS for my house, and the poor thing spent YEARS as the living room PC in a house full of stoners. Every surface is slightly amber and sticky. Any good cleaners I can use to remove it all without damaging the electronics?

I prefer D8 these days because I'm a lightweight and generally prefer the less intense buzz. I live in a state that's not recreational-friendly and don't qualify for medical (though I would in almost any other state, ugh), so I've been stocking up on D8 carts, gummies, and D8-infused hemp flower before the federal ban happens. Even if states can opt out as I've read might be an option, my state definitely will not.

What's the best way to store those long-term?

I've found freezing the gummies works wonders. A couple of years ago when state legislature banned D8, I had stocked up on gummies and put them in the freezer. I've still got plenty, and they're just as good as they were new even after close to 2 years in the freezer. So, I'm confident that works.

I also stocked up on carts back then, and I've had mixed results after a couple years. Some of them now taste absolutely terrible and others just clog up immediately. They were kept in a dark location but at room temperature. They're still mostly potent enough to get the job done, but not ideal due to the kinda gross taste and frequent clogs.

I just bought a new batch of carts and some pre-rolls, so what is the best way to deal with them?

What I've read are light and oxygen are the main things that cause it to break down. I've currently got the carts in ziploc bags with the air sucked out and am storing them in the fridge. I don't have a vacuum sealer, but I am looking to get one for the kitchen eventually and will probably upgrade the ziploc bags to proper vacuum sealed bags.

Is that sufficient, and any other tips to make these last?

I am growing in an organic medium. I'm somewhat new to growing still as this is only my second grow, first with organic soil. I was wondering how beneficial cover crops would be in my container. I was thinking on using white clover. Even if it isn't totally beneficial, as long as it wouldn't be harmful, it would be nice to keep that ecosystem active

Got three of these in the ground and then we had a hard frost last night, hopefully they live 🤞🤞

I'm looking to get into a dry herb vape as a better alternative to prerolls. All I see online is people lavishing praise on them and real studies saying they have health benefits. Plus buying straight flower and grinding is cheaper.

Do you use one and if so do you have a reco? I've been leaning towards the g pen elite for a not astronomical price but decent looking portable build.
