what would Reddit need to do to get you to go back

I wouldn’t because I like it better here. It’s easier to engage because it’s not so huge and there’s less toxicity. I like the software better and that nobody is trying to push certain content in front of me or trying to get me to spend more time on the site. I’ll still go to Reddit on occasion, but that will be because it’s useful for finding information. It won’t be because I want to be part of that community.

/r/kbinMigration created.... and quickly banned by reddit

Reply in thread

Kbin is nice. It’s easy to register on kbin.social so might as well check it out, although they are possibly under DDOS attack right now. I’m on there and lemmy at the moment.

Both systems are very similar and are compatible. You can follow lemmy from kbin and vice versa. Lemmy is probably more mature, but kbin is also pretty slick and seems to be moving fast. The community on kbin.social is fairly large so you will likely find more interaction on there without having to subscribe to federated servers. That probably makes onboarding a little easier for reddit refugees. They also have a microblog feature that works like Mastodon (federated twitter alternative) so you get to use lemmy-like and mastodon-like in one app and federate with both.

The fact that kbin is written in PHP shouldn’t put anybody off. Modern PHP isn’t the same as the old stuff that earned a bad reputation. I haven’t used PHP for a long time, but my understanding is it’s now a solid stack that’s on par with other mainstream stacks.

What is your favorite TTRPG that isn't DnD?

Pathfinder 2e and Scum and Villainy.

5e just never really stuck for me. I like all the character options in Pathfinder and how easy it is to build something awesome.

Scum and Villainy is just a ton of fun. It’s so easy to learn, the rules are simple, and it always leads to good times. There are so many opportunities for creativity and for things to go off the rails in the best way. The games I have played have basically been dumb criminals doing dumb things and sort of succeeding anyway with unexpected results.

Apparently Cyberpunk 2077 is good now?

I played long after release after a big patch. I knew the launch was a disaster but I hadn’t followed the game closely so I didn’t have huge expectations. I absolutely loved that game when I finally played.

I’m one of those game tourists who hardly ever finishes anything. I don’t have enough time to game so I’ll just drop a game if I’m not really into. Cyberpunk was one of the few games I’ve finished in recent years.

The gameplay was really satisfying, I enjoyed the story, and I loved the characters. There are a few you get to spend a lot of time with and I found myself actually caring about them. For me, it was reminiscent of how I felt playing Mass Effect. It’s one of my all time favorites for sure.

It’s definitely worth a play if it sounds like something you’d be interested in.

Leaked Tesla documents shed new light on why the Cybertruck is taking so long

Reply in thread

Same here. I bought a Tesla in 2019 and was foolish enough to pay for FSD. At the time, they were saying it would be available by the end of the year. They finally rolled out a “beta” a few months ago and it’s terrible. That’s after they had me on this bullshit robo-nanny software monitoring my driving.

The motors, battery, and charging infrastructure are great, but I would never buy another thing from Tesla as long as Elon Musk is involved with the company. He is a reprehensible troll and a dishonest businessman.

What systems are y'all playing?

Currently playing Pathfinder 2e. I like the system and the lore. Played Scum and Villainy a while back and loved it. My understanding is it’s largely the same as Blades in the Dark. There’s so much freedom to create some really memorable experiences. Our GM for Pathfinder also mentioned Dungeon Crawl Classics. That looks like it could be interesting.

What’s everyone playing this weekend?

Reply in thread

I tried it once a while back and the tutorial seemed pretty good. I was able to grasp things easier than some other paradox games. My biggest worry is I don’t have time to play consistently and I will forget too much between sessions. I never picked it up again because of that, but I keep looking at it and want to try again.

for the Reddit refugees, do you also feel a bit heartbroken?

No. Sites and communities come and go. Before Reddit, I was on slashdot and would occasionally use others like kuro5hin, fark, etc. Reddit had a lot more going on and was much better for comments when it came along. Then it got huge and only the small subs were any good for a sense of community or discussion. For a long time, it’s mostly been good for doom scrolling outside of some niche hobby subs. If anything, it’s kinda nice that some people are motivated to try other things like lemmy and kbin.

Should I Jump to Debian 12? I have Kubuntu 23.04

You will get the same version of Plasma and probably older versions of some other packages you use. With 5.27 being the last significant update until Plasma 6, you’re good on that for a while. Nothing will be newer than what you already have. None of your packages will get any updates beyond bug fixes and security updates, but it will be rock solid.

Kubuntu is also reliable and has newer packages. Personally, I don’t think there’s much to gain here unless you’re set on something that doesn’t have snap and don’t mind running older versions of most packages.

I would second this. I’ve used Endeavour and it’s nice, but it doesn’t have much of a purpose. It’s an easy installer with some default packages. Once it’s installed, it’s 100% Arch but with a different name and you don’t know how some things work because they were automatically configured for you. Might as well use the real thing. The archinstall script is easy and you only have to do it once.

Russia halts wartime deal allowing Ukraine to ship grain. It’s a blow to global food security

Reply in thread

Bullshit. The Russians are waging war against a smaller country that was begging to avoid war. And do you remember the Russians were lying all along while they massed troops on the border? They called it a training exercise. The reason anybody is in this situation at all is Russia. The EU doesn’t owe Russia a damn thing.

Just weeks ago, the Russians destroyed a dam, killing thousands of people and causing an ecological catastrophe. For the past year, they have been teasing a disaster at Zaporizhzhia.

You are mistaken, friend. Russia is evil.

do you think the fediverse could replace popular social media

Reply in thread

Something along these lines seems more realistic to me. There will always be a place for easy, safe walled garden experiences with a low barrier to entry. In the fediverse, that could be a very large, curated instance where a broad group could find what they want without having to figure out how to subscribe to federated communities. Similar to how so many people were introduced to the internet via Prodigy, Compuserve, AOL, etc.
