Any ideas?
Depending on the hobby, this is some fucked up gatekeeping.
My first thought was riding a motorcycle as a hobby, and that is one activity that many people severely underestimate how much expensive gear you should be wearing for your safety before you even consider doing it.

Well it's a good thing your worries were unfounded then because Trump got 72 million votes in 2020, and as of right now he's got those same 72 million votes in 2024. 10 million or so democrats sat out this election compared to 2020 and that's why Harris lost.

Expand North! So much room up there.
America isn't any better. Depending on what statistic you are looking at, 40% to 75% of all Americans live within 100 miles of the border
Not so fun fact: if American border patrol agents stop you within the 100 mile zone, they can ignore parts of the fourth amendment and perform what would normally be illegal search and seizure

Orange juice makers consider using alternative fruit as prices skyrocket
Reply in thread
There’s a dirty secret in your glass of orange juice. Even though it says “not from concentrate,” it probably sat in a large vat for up to year with all the oxygen removed from it. This allows it to be preserved and dispensed all year-round. Taking out all the O2 also gets rid of all the flavor. So the juice makers have to add the flavors back in using preformulated recipes full of chemicals called “flavor packs.” Mmm, delicious, fresh-squeezed ethyl-butyrate!

Passengers in wheelchairs can't use most airplane washrooms. That could change
Reply in thread
I looked into it, and apparently she spent months fighting with them to replace her wheelchair. In the meantime, she developed sores from being in a generic wheelchair, and she ended up needing two emergency surgeries, and either passed away due to complications, or due to the sores directly.

Tony's Chocolonely bars are shaped unevenly to represent farmer inequality and the coastline of Africa
Maybe they should spend less money on a fancy mold for their chocolate and more on better sourced cocoa beans with less lead in them: https://www.consumerreports.org/health/food-safety/lead-and-cadmium-in-dark-chocolate-a8480295550/

Discord lowers free upload limit to 10MB: “Storage management is expensive”
Well that didn't last very long. It was 8 MB for like six years and then it just went to 25 MB maybe a year ago and now we're back down to 10 MB.
I'm surprised they aren't offsetting the cost by selling all our data to language learning models like everyone else is
