New Worldbuilding Wiki Page on High Context Living

I've been working on a new page for the wiki, gathering up examples of the kind of bespoke, solarpunk systems people rig up when they live offgrid, in places with unreliable grids, or when they just want to reduce their energy usage.

Cool project opportunity: "I want to compile a happy/cozy/funny poetry anthology set in near solarpunk future"

I don't know how many poets we have in our community here but I wanted to extend an invitation from over on reddit - cromlygames is working on some kind of light hearted solarpunk poetry book and is looking for contributors! They're a mod over there and a dev on the Fully Automated TTRPG team and this isn't their first book project so I think anything they put together is going to be cool!

So, be the change you want.

I want to put together a set of light hearted poetry about places and characters (like Pam Ayres "who are you calling vermin"), but set in a recognisable solarpunk world. Poems that might be called 'Overheard at the library', 'Ballad of Bike Bridge', 'The Agrivoltichian's holiday', 'Lawnmower's reincarnation'. ect.

Looking for examples of High-Context Living

Hi, I'm working on a page for the /c/writing worldbuilding resource wiki on "High Context Living" and I'm hoping some of you might have good examples/stories!

My working definition at the moment is "the sort of custom, DIY systems favored by offgrid homesteaders and people without other options, which trade user-facing complexity and unique quirks/challenges for significant efficiency and lower cost in parts and materials."

Looking for kiosk-style OS recommendations for turning ewaste computers and monitors into bus schedule displays

Hi, I have access to a decent amount of ewaste through my time volunteering at my local free stuff Swap Shop and I've been thinking about turning some old computers and monitors into displays for my local bus routes. The city transit system already has a website that shows the position of all the buses on each route, I just need to some sort of kiosk OS that'll display it reliably and pull it back up after getting rebooted.

The idea is to make sure they're reliable and offer them on my local free groups to anyone with a window, apartment or storefront, near a bus stop. So they'd be indoors, sheltered, and connected through whatever Wi-Fi is available at each location.

We get all kinds of stuff, from chromebooks to those PC/monitor combos, old laptops, and tons of screens. So whatever your recommendation is, chances are I'll get access to something suitable eventually.

What I'm looking for is recommendations for the software, probably a kiosk OS, that can be set up to just display a website (possibly two instances of it tiled side by side of the stop serves more than one route). It'll probably need to refresh it occasionally and it'll definitely need to snap back into the same display mode after losing power. The goal is something reliable, as close to set-and-forget as I can probably get kludging this together from ewaste and FOSS.

So far folks have recommended Wayland Compositors like Cage Kiosk and ChromeOS kiosk mode. If you have any strong feelings on alternatives or other ways if doing things, please let me know! Thanks!

Floodplain Restoration - Levee Removal and House Shifting

This postcard was made as part of the 2026 Story Seed Library Art Collab, which was themed on Disaster Preparedness, Response and Relief. For my part of the collab I decided to focus on the disaster preparedness side of the theme, and specifically on levee removal, house shifting, and ceding unsafe land back to nature.

Humans have been building levees in my country ever since colonization - in a way they're part of an unending campaign to 'civilize' the land, smoothing out rough terrain, straightening and containing rivers, filling in wetlands, and generally drying out the continent.

Prior to levees, river landscapes were often messy, complex, and full of food for birds, fish and invertebrates. They would spread and braid across a wide area, and their slow-moving, shallow channels formed sprawling wetlands full of native grasses and willows which provided critical resting and rearing sites for young salmon before they headed out to sea. These wide spaces could flood safely during storms, and they played an important role in slowing and cleaning floodwaters.

These shifting rivers and sprawling wetlands were generally inconvenient to farmers and other settler types, who prized floodplains for farmland and development. To protect their new territory from flooding, they built thousands of miles of levees along nearly every major waterway, constraining their movement until some looked more like canals than natural rivers.

This was disastrous for the species which had evolved to occupy the niches now buried under levees and fill but it also hasn't worked out great for humanity. In a narrowed, straightened river, that surge of water has nowhere to go, and nothing to slow its movement. As climate change alters weather patterns, intensifying storms and worsening both droughts and floods, we've seen frequent levee failures as hundred- and thousand-year floods become routine events.

There's a self-defense truism that "the best defense is not to be there" which I think applies in this situation.

Levee removal recognizes that this modern configuration isn't working well for anyone, humans or the species we share our environment with, and seeks to restore rivers to something closer to their original configuration. This can be beneficial in two ways - it allows the river to safely spread into designated areas where it can slow during a flood and it allows for the restoration of habitats where native species can return and flourish surprisingly quickly.

In this way levee removal is part of a wider rejection of modern human landscapes. Flood- and erosion-mitigation tactics like sponge cities, beaver dam analogs, and rough mounding all focus on restoring or simulating preexisting conditions, and on slowing the movement of water and catching it in place, allowing it to permeate the ground again. And because these are the habitats most native species evolved to find their niche in, it's no surprise that they often start to recover almost as soon as we nudge things back in this direction.

Making these changes is difficult though. It's not just farmland behind these levees - the sad truth is that there are many places where homes were built, families raised, memories made, that were never really suitable for development (this will probably include wildfire zones soon) and we're going to have to reckon with that in the coming decades, whether we're in a solarpunk society or not. We're already seeing the beginnings in our present with insurance companies refusing to cover some areas and floodplain buyouts where government agencies purchase flood-prone land, moving or demolishing any structures, and returning them to open space to restore and conserve natural floodplain functions. Some areas just make more sense as floodplains and wetlands, providing important habitats and giving the rivers room to safely spread and slow their movements than they do as eternally-imperilled developments.

So that's where I wanted to set this scene. In the bittersweet work of returning a piece of the floodplain to its original purpose and removing the home that was there.

There is a lot being done to rewild this site. Work crews are digging out the levee and hauling it away (in real life this fill is often used to build another levee further inland, behind the floodplain). They're removing the house which was built on this parcel of land. And they're digging a channel to reconnect a wetland which was once part of the river system but which was severed by the levee.

The timeline here is obviously a bit compressed – shifting the home, removing the levee, and digging the channel to reconnect the wetlands would likely all be separate stages of work. I've jammed them all into one shot for expedience more than realism.

When the removal and contouring work is done, a crew will likely plant willows, cottonwoods, wapato or other suitable native species.

The house shifting was inspired by this levee removal project, where a structure on site was demolished to clear the floodplain. I don't know the specifics of that particular building, what condition it was in, whether anything was salvaged (or was worth salvaging). But there are two alternatives to demolition which I've been trying to showcase in my work: deconstruction – the process of disassembling a building to salvage as many construction materials as possible, and house shifting, the work of physically moving a suitable structure rather than building new. Both can be wonderful solarpunk alternatives to demolition which make the society less extractive on its environment and reduce the amount of landfill space it requires.

I've featured house shifting in a previous picture but I wanted to make it a bit more prominent this time.

This would be a big day for these work crews. After weeks of planning and work, of emptying the home, disconnecting it from its utilities and foundation, removing a porch, and jacking it up so they can assemble a frame underneath, a flying crane cargo airship has finally arrived to hoist the house up into its hold to carry it away.

I imagine that they're probably using a mix of house shifting and deconstruction along this river - houses which aren't suitable for relocation, ones which aren't structurally sound, or have slab foundations, or are seriously damaged by flooding are disassembled and salvageable materials and construction waste are both hauled away by truck. The house shifting is probably done to relocate occupied homes to safer places, or to move abandoned-but-habitable homes to removal lots where a new family can choose them.

The concrete foundation left behind could be broken up and dug out with an excavator, used as fill or salvaged as rubble (it could even be cut into blocks for easier reuse if they have a lot of time or labor available) or it could just be filled in with dirt from the levee and left alone. (It's a bad place to have built a basement but I've lived in neighborhoods where half the houses were constantly running sump pumps because the whole place was built in a filled-in wetland so I don't think it's unrealistic).

You may have noticed a cargo airship in the upper section of the scene. I think modern blimps have helped us forget just how absurdly, sky-filling-ly large real zeppelins were, and the LCA60T (which this is based on) is bigger than most of those. Tremendous thanks to GrafZeppelin127 over on reddit for repeatedly pointing out when I under-sized it in my early drafts. I ended up having to add more image around the edges just to fit it in the shot

Moreso than usual, the airship for the task I'm depicting doesn't really exist. The closest fit is probably the LCA60T, which is intended to work as a flying crane, but its cargo hold is long and narrow in the current designs. It could fit a mobile home or pieces of a modular home designed to be transported by truck, but it wouldn't be a good choice for a larger structure. There are other airship designs with larger holds, like the Boeing Megalifter concept from the 1970s which had a cargo bay 40 feet wide and 40 feet tall, and about as long as the LCA60T’s and the Lockheed-Martin Rigid Airship concept from the 1990s and early 2000s which had a cargo bay 250 feet by 260 feet, nearly square. These weren't flying cranes though, and they were both designed to use a mix of buoyant lift and aerodynamic lift which could likely make them a poor fit for crane operations (or at least mean that their capacity would drop while hovering).

For a while I'd been thinking that a flying crane could simply carry large cargoes dangling underneath its keel. It turns out that that might be true in a few narrow cases (such as when transporting assembled high-tension transmission towers, which are already optimized to reduce wind exposure), but most cargoes would need to be transported safely in the hold. Once I looked up the damage normal mobile homes can endure while traveling 55 miles an hour on a highway, and after reading about the USS Akron's spy basket becoming a dangerous pendulum during its only test, I was even more convinced to rework the image. Something tells me that an ordinary stick-frame house would not do very well blowing around at high altitudes.

When it came to placing solar panels, I wanted to keep well away from any structure on the envelope which might need maintenance, leaving a sort of patchy layout not unlike solar panels on a household roof. I can't promise that's accurate, but I'm fairly pleased with the overall look. I read somewhere that panels would be reasonably efficient even pointing downwards, thanks to the high albedo of the clouds below/around the airship, but can't find an exact source. I think with our current tech they wouldn't be enough to drive the airship but could provide enough juice for slow maneuvering like station keeping, and cover other electrical needs onboard.

River Traffic

Hi, it's been awhile since I photobashed art for the solarpunk postcard series (I've been busy on a couple other, larger-scope solarpunk projects I hope to share soon) but I have some time while we work through final edits and I wanted to get back into it.

I've done a couple other nautical solarpunk pictures but they were both about modernized tall ships on the open ocean and I wanted to do one focused on the kind of activity you might see in a harbor, big river, or along a coastline.

The biggest/closest vessel here is an electric cargo barge originally from the Netherlands. These close-to-the-shore cargo vessels are a good fit for electrification as they run shorter distances and can swap their shipping-container-sized batteries whenever they transfer cargo using the same cranes. This article goes into more detail though it's a little out of date as much of what it describes is now happening IRL.

The house shifting barge was lifted from a photograph of a real project carried out by a company in Vancouver, Canada though this appears to be common on coastlines. I'm a huge believer in salvage and reuse and have featured deconstruction in a previous postcard, but I haven't showcased the work of picking up and moving entire houses yet. House shifting is also done overland, using large flatbed trucks, but the width of the roadways imposes more limitations on how big a piece of a building you can move so some additional disassembly and reassembly may be required. I think a solarpunk society would strive to limit outright demolition to very specific circumstances where the structure and materials are truly unrecoverable, and to relocate buildings wherever possible so this kind of move might be a common sight.

I replaced the original lead tugboat with an electric one.

Closer to the opposite shore on the left, we have a cargo sailboat, or more officially, a steel-hulled, container-capable gaff ketch. I don't know how practical it is but I really liked this design as soon as I saw it - the mixture of a fairly traditional design with capacity for a modern shipping container (or 1 TEU sized 'bus' module to serve as a passenger ferry) just calls to me because I like a good anacronism. One of the big advantages of ships and containers is scale but single containers will still have to be moved from whatever big port they're unloaded at to their final destination, so I suppose this would be similar to a riverborn 18-wheeler truck. It's primarily wind driven but also has some configuration of electric motors. If these are viable we might see a good many of them in the bays, coasts, and big rivers of a solarpunk society, if only because they can reduce externalities like pollution or unnecessary draw on the grid.

In the middle there's a docked sailboat. Not much to say about that.

And on the right is a river cleanup craft. Hopefully a solarpunk society will produce far less trash overall, especially far less disposable plastic waste, and would recycle or dispose of it better. But there's always something that gets away and water has a way of catching anything blown around by the wind. Waterborne trash might also include debris swept downstream in previous floods.

It's more effective to catch this waste while it's concentrated in waterways near human settlements than it is to try to find and collect it on the open ocean, so I wanted to show one of these boats at work. There are many designs, but I picked Mr Trash Wheel from Baltimore, MD because the design is whimsical and probably easiest to recognize.

As for the shoreline, I was inspired by a photograph of Troy, New York, where a neighborhood of brick buildings look out at the Hudson river over a set of parking lots. I wanted to do a quick background with a dense community with a lot of four to five story brick buildings (as they're pretty sustainable/practical long term) with hints of forested streets and a big park/riparian forest buffer along the waterfront.

I've done one postcard about flood compatible cities and generally favor sponge city designs where applicable, but I'm not sure what the best answer is for old downtowns built right up against rivers, with reinforced shorelines already in place. Replacing waterfront parking lots with parks full of swales and other flood mitigation designs is probably a good start and those changes could also improve water quality in the river by trapping waste and filtering surface runoff, especially if any fertilizer/compost use is carefully minimized or eliminated. Perhaps the community has also bought up waterfront land nearby, removed levees and restored flood planes to give the river room to spread and slow. Levee removal can both mitigate flooding and restore important wetland habitats.

The amphitheatre-shaped recess in the embankment is intended to provide safe public access to the river. This is also kind of aspirational for me - canals, harbors, and rivers IRL often catch drainage from city streets contaminated with animal waste and vehicle fluids, overflows from sewers, outflows (legal or illegal) from various manufacturers and industry and even just fertilizers and pesticides from lawns. I've seen people swimming in all sorts of waterways I'd personally stay out of IRL, but I'd love to live in a society which was so conciencious about its impacts that the water downstream even from major cities remained safe and clean.

Feasibility question around pond levelers and road salt contamination in surface water

Hi, I'm wondering if two water-related things can be interlinked accurately.

The first is the issue of road salt in North America and the growing salinity of our water. Road salt has contaminated surface and groundwater to the point where some streams now show higher levels of brine in the middle of summer, when they're mostly fed by springs, rather than in first snowmelt when the runoff from roads and parking lots and driveways happens. I've found a few articles on phytoremediation but haven't vetted them yet; other than that the only answer I know of for restoring soil and groundwater is flushing out the salt, eventually all the way to the ocean (and of course to stop adding more). Unfortunately, saltwater is heavier than freshwater so it accumulates in the lowest part of ponds, lakes, and aquifers.

I'm wondering if pond levelers could help here. They're a contraption used to prevent beavers from raising the level of a body of water past a certain point. Typically they use a flexible pipe to pull water from above the dam, through the dam (humped up to the highest point humans want the water level to reach), and pour it down into the outflow stream/wetland. Ideally they're quiet and don't cause the beavers to keep looking for a leak, but at the very least they're pretty impossible for a beaver to jam full of sticks and mud. This keeps the beavers from flooding their dangerous human neighbors so they don't escalate to physical harm.

The idea I want to check is whether humans could work with beavers to siphon trapped saltwater from the bottom of a lake (and if there are any precautions you'd have to take). I've read about Beaver Dam Analogs and various systems for coexisting with beavers like pond levelers and diversion dams, but I've never worked on any of them. I don't think pond levelers follow siphon rules but I'm not sure.

Tractorbeam - The Water Issue Open Submissions Call

Tractor Beam’s “Water Issue” is looking for speculative stories exploring humanity’s relationship with water, land, food systems, and survival. Editors want anti-apocalyptic fiction centered on irrigation, farming, migration, sea-soil technologies, environmental adaptation, and the social impact of water scarcity or abundance. The publication welcomes hopeful, inventive, and deeply human stories about ecosystems and interconnected communities rather than traditional collapse narratives.

Submission Guidelines Is water the original technology? Have a soil and sea story to share? Submit to our Fall issue. There’s a Mandinka proverb: rice fields that share borders share the same waters. Neighbors share more than fences; they share seasons, soil, and whatever tempestuous, whorling thing runs between them—animal, vegetable, or otherwise.

For the sixth issue of Tractor Beam, we’re looking for stories about the role of water in soil, growth, land, and ecosystems large and small. We are specifically seeking anti-apocalyptic visions that explore the future of water in farming and food production, island ecologies, hybrid sea-soil technologies, the people who move water and the people water moves. Stories about drought, diaspora, and what gets carried downstream.

There’s a reason hunger symbolizes longing and thirst symbolizes need. No matter how rich the soil, a seed needs the catalyst of water to grow. Water is the original technology.

We’ve been calling this the water issue, but it’s as much the fluidity issue, the migration issue, the can’t-contain-the-flood issue, the can’t-survive-without-it issue. There are no borders that can contain water, and no borders that will contain the fallout of not having enough.

As anyone who’s irrigated anything knows, water goes wherever it wants to go.

Tractor Beam pays $1,000.00 for all accepted submissions. Submissions will be considered for publication online on our website and Substack, and in some cases, for one-off printed editions.

Found a review of Midwest Chrome, a cyberpunk book set in the american midwest

The review is perhaps a little dramatic but I'm still looking forward to the book. My favorite cyberpunk scenes and stories take place in rural areas (Turner's brother's place in Count Zero, basically all of The Peripheral and some of the later scenes in Virtual Light). so I'm interested to see what they do with the setting here:

New worldbuilding resource page on how work in a solarpunk setting might be different

This one is a little more editorial than some of the other pages, (which are closer to being lists of links) but it's a complicated topic which needs some introduction.

I think about this topic a lot, as someone who always has more projects going than he can finish, and because I really hate this (capitalist) idea that people are inherently lazy and won't work unless compelled to with the threat of poverty, starvation, homelessness etc.

The page outlines ways work might change (including problems with modern work and unnecessary work), new categories of work, and ways to sift solarpunk callings from modern day examples.

I hope it'll be useful to you - it's very much a work in progress (as all the wiki pages are) so feel free to send me any additions/modifications you'd like to see.

Looking for input/feedback on what work would look like in solarpunk settings

Someone on Mastodon asked if we had a page on how work would change in solarpunk settings and it's a topic I have some thoughts on so I put a draft together.

Basically what I'd like to know is what does your ideal outcome look like? If we were able to start fixing things today and never stop, what does work in this future look like to you? I've written up my version but if I've missed something or gotten something wrong I'd very much like to know.

At the very least I can promise I'll try to show your ideas well in my own fiction, but hopefully this resource will spread them a little further into stories that inspire others.

Hoping to check a concept for use in fiction

Hi, I'm not sure if any of you have read Murder in the Tool Library (a quite good solarpunk murder mystery, I think) but I'm working on a story with an investigation and I'm wondering how close AE Marling's answers are to being a drop-in solution for that particular concept, and sort of whether it passes basic scrutiny by anarchists.

If you haven't read it, the basic idea is that the setting's eutopian city doesn't have a police force but it does have a large and active civilian investigative society which normally investigates more mundane situations but can be temporarily empowered with access to additional information by the community on a case-by-case basis, such as when someone is murdered for seemingly no reason. They lacked any sort of qualified immunity and the community seemed to have an existing system based around rehabilitation and restitution that they answered to. It seemed to be very croudsourcing-oriented but members had to pass a fairly-strict qualification process to screen out those who would misuse their access.

They also seemed to have a much broader scope of what they normally investigated than the modern day police do (finding lost pets and such), as crimes seemed to be much more rare in the setting, given the other safety nets available to catch things earlier.

So I suppose most of my questions are around does this seem viable to you?

The closest IRL analogs I can think of aren't great - the investigative society as a concept is a bit reminiscent of the problematic (if not outright harmful) Vidoq society and the infamous Reddit vs The Boston Marathon Bomber incident. But there are also numerous examples of crimes which were primarily or only solved because of the work of citizen investigators, investigative journalists, or private investigators so perhaps that's the better inspiration.

When I asked some of these questions on the xmpp channel it was pointed out that an organization charged with investigating crimes outside its own members but at least nominally accountable to the community is police under another name, which is probably fair. So I guess my question boils down to: are there anarchist answers to how to do policing?

The anarchist manifestos I've tried seemed to be listing all the problems with modern police, which I agree with, and saying that if you solve all of society's other problems you won't need police, prisons etc. which, I don't really doubt that but it also doesn't feel attainable to me. Especially when one of my most frequently-reused comments over on the subreddit is explaining that yes you can still have conflicts (and thus story plots) in a better, more eutopian society. All kinds of crimes, shortcuts and disagreements can arise without desperate necessity and even between people who 95% agree with each other.

So is there a halfway-to-utopia answer?

Part of the trouble is that though my story centers around an investigation (a treasure hunt for thousands of tons of industrial waste illegally dumped decades earlier, and a modern day conspiracy to cover it up and block the investigation), I have a lot less room for deep dives into the organization itself. Marling was able to devote much of his story to exploring a lot of concepts and nuances around the abolishment of police and prisons, how they try to screen for people with sociopathic or abusive tendencies and how the investigative society still has some hierarchy which puts it at risk to people who prioritize ladder climbing and power, (long with the nuts and bolts of how things might be done when the worst case scenario happens and someone commits murder despite all the other social safety nets).

So thanks for reading my question, and for any thoughts you might have. I guess I'm wondering if this existing idea seems basically viable, and what specifics you'd want called out where I can fit them. If you think it doesn't work, I'd be very interested in any alternatives (and I'm happy to read relevant articles, screeds, manifestos etc!). Thanks

Some updates to the worldbuilding wiki and a new page on phytoremediation/mycoremediation/bioremediation

Hey folks, just wanted to give you a quick update. I've been making some updates to assorted pages in the writing wiki, mostly just adding more links/concepts.

The big change change is that I finally got enough of a page on remediating contaminants in the environment using plants, fungi, and microorganisms put together that it feels worthwhile to add it to the site. It's still very much a work in progress, but I think there's enough there to introduce the concept and provide a place to add stuff to as we go. One of the real, unexpected joys of this project for me has been having a place to save links and concepts as I come across them, rather than having to track them down later when I need them.

Some art I made for the Solarpunk TTRPG Fully Automated to go with their upcoming chase mechanics

The other Fully Automated devs are working on a new set of chase mechanics. We've been jokingly calling the create-an-obstacle-behind-yourself move "Summon Fruit Stand" and every time we say it I picture a walking robot fruit stand plodding slowly into the way, blocking the route. I don't need much excuse to make solarpunk art so I photobashed this scene.

Most of my solarpunk photobashes are researched in advance, this one was kinda off-the-cuff. I knew if I included a background I wanted a narrow side street climbing a hill, and was able to find that. I added some water permeable street surfaces and shutters for passive temperature regulation in buildings while I was cladding it with textures.

The robot design is inherently silly so I tried not to overthink things this time.

Speaking of the robot - I wanted something that said "my cabbages!" but couldn't quite justify giving it a thatched roof so we get a questionably-better tiled roof robot instead.

I wanted its human companions to look like they were guiding it to a new location, aimed for a kinda casual, happy posture, like they have no idea they're in the way.

Passive Greenhouses in Early Spring (photobash)

This is another one of my older photobashes, this time centered around passive greenhouses.

The first time I saw an article about this design I was amazed I’d never considered how poorly standard greenhouses fit our use case up here. I worked on a farm for years growing up and we heated about half of them at least through December. Single or double ply plastic sheets and corrugated white plastic siding nailed to stick frame walls on the ends. Garage doors only on either end. I can’t imagine how much they cost to heat. It’s that one-size-fits-all-just-burn-more-gas approach I think a solarpunk society should reconsider wherever it finds it.

I think if I was going to do this art from scratch I'd follow walipini designs (with steeper glass windows) more than the passive greenhouses designs used in more temporate places and in big industrial ag operations. The current art is sort of halfway between walipini and a passive greenhouse.

Hi, I'm working on a collection of resources to make writing solarpunk easier and I'm currently putting together a page about exurbs, basically how they came to be, why they're unsustainable, how they might reshape in the future if supply chains break down.

Solarpunk has a lot of 'fuck cars' elements and I've picked up a lot of that over the years, but as I research this one, I'm realizing I don't have specific examples as close to hand as I did for the other topics. I haven't spent much time in communities dedicated just to these discussions and I'd like to make sure I don't miss any community-favorite articles/essays on stuff like how cars reshaped rural places, the complexities of automobile manufacturing supply chains, and the car-size arms race.

If there's anything you think should be included in that discussion I'd be very happy to add it!
