Christa Pike out of hospital and back in prison after botched execution attempt

Reply in thread

I don't think any particular crime should warrant the death penalty. But it should be considered for those with a clear pattern of serious violent criminal behaviour, where rehabilitation has been tried but unsuccessful. For example multiple assaults, rapes and/or murders over a certain period of time, with prison terms served in between the crimes, where there has been attempts at rehabilitation, but these have failed to correct the criminals violent behaviour.

Christa Pike out of hospital and back in prison after botched execution attempt

Reply in thread

Those are questions I am not qualified to answer. We'd have to hire some criminologists, doctors, psychologists and other experts as well as lawyers to conduct in-depth research as to what is the best way forward. American prisons are a bad model, I am personally not American. I'd suggest prisons more closely resembling those in the Nordic nations, which focus on rehabilitation rather than vengeance and punishment.

That said, here in my Nordic country there was one case where a man was convicted of rape, and sent to prison with a minimum sentence as a first-timer. Once he came out of prison, he raped again. He was caught and sent back to prison. He served his sentence and upon release, he raped a third time, and was sent back to prison.

Clearly this person is beyond rehabilitation. It would be in the interest of public safety and the prisoners own conscience if he was made to stop committing these violent acts, as clearly he is unable to do that. In my country it also costs between $70,000 and $100,000 per year to house a prisoner. Paying this sum every year for the rest of the serial rapists life is an absolute tragedy when we are having trouble financing social security, education and healthcare. In this case I would consider implementing the death penalty, but that's just my personal opinion.

Migrant tunnels in Lithuania direct suspicion towards Minsk

Doing nothing to prevent this type of migration is handing free votes to entities like AfD in Germany and Marine Le Pen in France. If more moderate politicians cannot find reasonable solutions, then people will vote for more extreme options (leaning more towards the far-right than the far-left), and this only serves to destabilize Europe. The billionaire problem in Europe is not comparable to the one in the US. The bottom 50% still hold a lot of wealth in Europe while in the US the 1% are more wealthy than the entire middle class.

Lebanon becomes first Middle Eastern country to abolish the death penalty

Reply in thread

I'm talking more about serial killers, serial rapists, repeat violent offenders etc. who do not respond to rehabilitation after ample opportunities. Death penalty cannot be more expensive than incarcerating people for decades. All that you need for capital punishment is a tough piece of rope and gravity. But if you want to use more humane methods, voluntary euthanasia costs in Switzerland are about $13k, which is far less than housing someone in a maximum security prison for even one year.

Germany's triumphant far-right AfD aims fire at Merz

Possible, but Le Pen and Melenchon are both pro-Russia shills. Currently Le Pen is polling about 35% and Melenchon 15%. If Melenchon does not make it to round two, and Le Pen faces off against Philippe (the centrist guy), then Melenchon's voters might vote for Le Pen. This could give Le Pen 35+15 = 50% of the vote. It's possible that it will be a very tight race.
