Chamberlain shuts off access to MyQ’s APIs, breaking smart home integrations

Companies should be held accountable for bullshit like that.

My idea goes like this: In order to be able to sell some device you need to deposit its source code and the sources for all updates with the proper authorities.

If you then don't provide updates maintaining a) security and b) functionality of said device, because for example you go bankrupt, financially, or like in this very case morally, all of those sources are released and from then on are open source.

Totally logical and expected functionality

I'm having the same issue at work at the moment. When I connect to my dual monitor setup at work, all my usb devices stop working. Mouse, keyboard, the internal camera, monitors... All dead till you reboot, then they work for 10 Minutes again.

Now i have the same Monitor setup at home, no issues here. Mind you, it's a Lenovo ThinkPad with Lenovo monitors and it worked for years without issues.

The Lenovo technician told our IT guy that's because my monitor setup at home is another generation with a different chipset in the usb hub/switch. After giving us a few tips that didn't work, like disconnecting the Monitors from power for a minute or using a different port on the notebook they defaulted to "You're shit out of luck because the support ends after 4 years" - The monitors are 4 years old.

Fuck Cars

It's the symbol of freedom because kids in north America are locked up until they start to drive. Since you can't walk or cycle without risking your life, parents have to drive their kids everywhere until they are old enough to drive. This then is perceived as liberation.

Of course car centric infrastructure is the reason you need to be driven in order to be safe. It's the product of decade long lobbying by the car industry.

My neighbours had a small hunting terrier when i was a kid, forgot the name of the breed. Fucking asshole dog tried to bite me every time she saw me although i went in and out there every day. Also she killed everything that moved, cats, birds, hedgehogs, ...

Neighbour was a hunter and those fuckers were bred to follow badgers into their sett and kill them. Badgers can be quite nasty themselves so most animals stay away, but not this breed. Only chance the badger has is to kill the dog, even if half of its nose is bitten off, it doesn't give a shit.

So I'm a bit sceptical about the whole "aggression is not bred" theory.

Daily Lemmy comments up from ~7m to ~11m following the launch of Sync?

Reply in thread

It's a very emotional thing for many of us. I've beed using reddit on sync exclusively, I just couldn't be arsed to use the web version any more.

So when they killed third party apps, reddit was dead to me. Not only because of the terrible user experience of the web site and official app, but mostly because of the way they treated the developers after all those years.

After the lemmy version came out, I opened it up and everything was back to normal (except for the missing content).

I'm really hoping that the devs of other apps succeed in the transition as well and they manage to get a good portion of their users to join as well.

As for the FOSS fundamentalists: I really don't get it. I've worked on open source projects in the past, when I felt I could contribute. I don't get all the hate being directed towards sync though. You like your FOSS-app? Great! I prefer sync and I'm happy to support the author.

An agnostic doesn't believe it's possible to know if god exists. A gnostic thinks it's possible.

Agnosticism is about knowing, atheism about beleiving. So if you don't know if god exists but firmly believe the idea is a load of crap you're an agnostic and an atheist.

If you're suggesting my neighbours trained her to be aggressive - they didn't - it was their family dog, they did the standard obedience training (sit, stay...) but no protection training. All their other dogs (german shepherds) were friendly.
