What made everyone move to Bluesky or Threads instead of Mastodon?

Networking effect

Mastodon required people to join a server which made out to people who are used to signing up to a single website for the past 20 years or such, seam too complex.

You also end up in a situation where social media managers have to reach engagement and impression targets and don't think which is best platform that will not be taken over Elon musk or Mark Zuckerberg style, but which will reach engagement targets the quickest.

Meta (owner of Facebook, Instagram & WhatsApp) is joining the fediverse very soon and have to seriously prepare. This isn't a theoretical scenario anymore.

Ok that seams nuts. Never thought this would happen as it would mean that people would delete Facebook accounts and basically move to mastodon or such. But I bet it's only between Facebook Instagram and WhatsApp. Like you could message people on Instagram and WhatsApp from Facebook and Visa versa and not actually follow people on mastodon.

Is it (still) worth trying to switch my family and friends from WhatsApp to Signal? (Read all of it, please.)

I think it's worth it.

Just simply send a link along with that's generally better and that lots of people are moving over. Watomatic could be looked into as a way to automatically remind people you are on signal when they go to Facebook you. It would then prompt then to install signal.

I take the attitude if they want to contact me either, phone, email or text.
