What is an uncanny skill or ability that a friend or person you know has ?

Maybe 8 years ago I was paired with this really quiet dude for a group project. It was for statics engineering. We had to create a poster board with force diagrams on cars, bridges, buildings, etc. We needed to create a bunch of drawings and discussed how to create them. This dude just quietly said "I can use paint" and started clicking away.

He opens paint while no one is really paying attention to him. Within 2 minutes, the first drawing was done. We all were confused so we started to watch him work. He was flying through the whole project. He would copy sections, move them slightly over, draw a couple lines, and have immaculate 3D pictures. He single handedly created all our diagrams in 30 minutes. Our group of 5 got an A on the project.

To this day, I still use paint doing some of the tricks I learned watching him work.

"Msnbc-lite" obviously

Full disclosure, I have no idea what this is trying to say and it looks like the ramblings of an insane person. But I think some of the conclusions are funny.

Unions rule!

If an employee is trying to skip hours, their manager has power over them. The manager can fire them, cut hours, or dock pay.

If a manager is trying to skimp pay, they still have power over the employee. The employee cannot make demands to the manager because they have no leverage.

But if all the employees join together? Now they have collective bargaining. This is what unions are for. Its to try and balance the inherent power imbalance.

What's something that you learned about yourself recently?

I really think I have undiagnosed ADHD. Tried getting diagnosed and spent 8 months going from a therapist, to a psychiatrist, and finally an ADHD specialist.

He met with me once, gave me a reaction time test, and asked me what I do for a living. Apparently engineers who have good reaction times are not likely to have ADHD. So.. yay, I'm cured.

How safe is Lemmy?

Reply in thread

I'm used to a good amount of "scary" leftist opinions. But someone on lemmygrad said Pol Pot shooting highly educated people in the head was a good thing - right after I said I was an engineer.

This place is cool but maybe I'll avoid that instance lol

Have you considered... Pol Pot good?

Basically. The field workers do not want work from home. While they are union members, most are right leaning. They believe in "bootstraps economics". Hard work deserves good pay and if you don't get paid enough its because you aren't working hard enough. People who WFH are lazy and don't deserve the same benefits. Go into the office and work hard like the rest of us.

I disagree with that mentality, but its what I'm dealing with.

Unions rule!

I understand the sentiment, but this isn't always true. Some workers need unions while working for non-profit companies.

The difference is more to do with the power imbalance between workers and managers.
