Yes, absolutely. I think smaller niche communities should be encouraged whenever possible.

Is there a way to view if the instance I am a part of has defederated with any other instances?

I see, thank you!

Question about Defederation that I am stuck on

The admin post makes it sound like we should ONLY see lemmy.world users, since the 'original' is located on beehaw, and beehaw has defederated us.

That makes sense. I thought the explanation said that we wouldn't receive any new content from beehaw.org. I didn't realize it only applied to comments. I could have sworn it said no new posts as well?

Ah ok this checks out. So as a Lemmy.World user, I am still going to see all of the new posts in those communities. I just can't comment? I could have sworn that the documentation stated that we wouldn't be receiving any new content (posts/comments) from Beehaw. So you are saying it is just a read-only? It does seem that we aren't picking up all of the new posts from /c/[email protected]. If you actually go to beehaw.org, there are way more new posts. Do you know why this is? There are also comments on the beehaw version but not the lemmy.world version. Aren't you saying we should be seeing comments?

Question about Defederation that I am stuck on

Got it. Thanks. I think I have a much better understanding now. That was very helpful. Hopefully this defederation nonsense works itself out as people spread out into their preferred instances/communities. It is a shame about Beehaw since they have some of the "currently" largest communities, such as /c/gaming. I assume people will just migrate to another one.

This comment seems to directly contradict what you said. Am I missing something? Is this person wrong?

Right, which would imply there is an issue across the fediverse with properly enforcing defederation. I'm just trying to make sure I understand how it's supposed to work.

[META] What is this place?
Is there any reason I only see one post on this community, if I visit it through lemmy.world?

I think the whole defederation thing is extremely unclear snd confusing. I think better documentation needs to be made to clearly show what we will and will not see when defederated by another instance. I don't think it's clear at all. I've asked this question like 10 times and received 10 different answers

Idk I give up. It's not clear at all. Hopefully better documentation and examples will be made to better help educate people like myself.

Shouldn't all the instances show the same community content?
Reply in thread
Thanks. Yes, it does appear we are in read only. I guess I'll just simplify this and not subscibe to any beehaw communities.

Is Nvidia Shield any good?
If you are getting it for local playback (i.e. Plex), get a Zidoo Z9x or something along those lines. You'll have way less headaches, I promise you.
Plex is becoming more and more of a pain in the ass. The company is trying to push everyone to get a plex pass and I suspect it probably won't even be free for too much longer. This is just based on recent changes and where I see the software going. To top it all off, Plex on Android is by far the worst thing on the fucking planet. Every other update breaks basic functionailty.
So yea, do yourself a favor and just get something like a Zidoo. It's the same price as a 2019 shield pro anyway. Just note that a Zidoo isn't for streaming. It's for local playback only.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the Shield has incorrect colors for Dolby Vision Profile 7 (blu ray format). So if you are playing those, then definitely DO NOT get the Shield.

Wait this directly contradicts what I was told in my below post. I'm still seeing some (not all) new posts from Beehaw. I used /c/[email protected] as an example.

The thing I'm confused about is whether or not we should be seeing posts from anyone on /c/gaming that's not from lemmy.world. Does that make sense? According to the admin's post here, we shouldn't, however I am still seeing a few posts that look new. Is this due to the caching issues? Because I'm definitely not seeing ALL of the new posts, just a handful. This is what i cannot seem to get a straight answer on. The below says no, however I definitely am 100% seeing posts from non-lemmy.world users on /c/[email protected]..........

"This won’t ever stop. You’ll notice that all posts after defederation are only from lemmy.world users. You won’t see posts/comments from ANY other instance (including instances that ) on beehaw.org communities. Those communities will quickly suck for us, as we’re only talking to other lemmy.world users. Your posts/comments are not being sent to any other lemmy. I highly recommend just unsubscribing from those communities, since they’re pretty pointless for us to be in right now."
