But it's true. Fan service can bring you only so far. Lower Decks has tons of fan service but it's almost never the main purpose of the story.

Bloomberg - Apple Says No Major App Developers Accept New Outside Payments
The funny thing is: This will work against them regarding the EU DMA regulations. If no one uses their offer it will not be interpreted as nobody wants to use it, but instead it will be interpreted as the offer was unfair.

A friend joked about making accounts for their dog on self hosted services, so that it could turn lights on and off. What are some unconventional things you've seen for pets and homelabs?
My dog refuses to do 2FA so that's not going to happen anytime soon... /s

Three seasons of PIC were already a mistake. The only good thing coming from it is the possibility of a Riker cooking/baking show (which I would totally watch).

Just an observation on game engines
Lamborghini Huracan: fast and exciting
Fiat Panda: outstanding fuel efficiency
Trucks: lots of hauling space
Why not build trucks with the chassis of a Lamborghini and the motor of a Panda. It would solve all of our problems...

Internet forums are disappearing because now it's all Reddit and Discord. And that's worrying.
Reply in thread
Discourse exists and is free to self-host and open source. Compared to classic forum software (like most *bb variants) it is a pleasure to use and feels not like a remnant of a lost age.
The (only?) downside is the similar name to Discord, but that's not them to blame, because they had their name first.

What's your laziest or most ridiculous automation?
My dishwasher automatically selects it's Eco program when powered on. The Eco program uses more water and more energy than the Auto program while also taking almost twice as long. So I have an automation that triggers when my dishwasher is powered on and then selects the Auto program for me - because pressing a button to change the program after loading the dishwasher would be too much to ask.

What's the best way to detect when I'm taking a shower?
You could use a classic dead man switch: Place several buttons around the whole place - basically everywhere except in the shower. Once you stop pressing any of these buttons for - let's say - 30 seconds you can assume you're taking a shower.

KitchenOwl Gone?
The creator's GitHub account is in limbo. He can see everything just normal, but for everyone else it's just a 404. GitHub support is informed but unresponsive.
There is a Matrix chat where the creator posts updates (although there is not much to update): KitchenOwl
There is no reason to believe that the latest version available on Docker Hub (0.7.7) is compromised in any way. If you want to play it safe use 0.7.6 (3 months old).

Valve have just updated the Source 1 SDK on GitHub to the latest code based on Team Fortress 2, effectively making TF2 code source available
Reply in thread
Just because the source code is available it does not mean it is free to use and do with it what you want. The license explicitly states that you may use it but have to publish it for free and follow the Steam subscriber agreement. Also this is just source code, not the assets (at least as far as I understand it).

Is there a self hosted version of Google Earth?
There is Cesium. But the thing you actually need is the actual maps. There are free maps (many of them based on OpenStreetMap), but the fidelity you know from Google Earth is usually not free. Also if you also want to self-host the actual maps you need a tile server for that and lots of disk space because these tiles take up a lot of it...

This is often done for consistency. Especially (although I have to admit that does not apply to TOS) when also heavy makeup or prosthetics are applied.
