The twitter user is an actual commercial pilot, and ACARS messages do look like that. Not sure what's up with SKW2438/SKY2438 but otherwise it seems legit. I think faking it would be harder than actually doing this.

IIRC this theory was debunked some time ago by a study. If you think about it, any dampening within the skull would lessen the force of the pecking and the bird would have to hammer away harder.

Stars are dim. Earth and the Moon are bright. If you exposed the shot such that stars would be visible, the Earth and the Moon would be horrendously overexposed.

If you look at this one of the moonlit nightside of the Earth they took on the way out, you can see stars. The website has EXIF-data on the bottom with more info on the exposure.
