[The Verge] Twitter has started blocking unregistered users

I start to realize how synchronized big tech is acting currently

  • google experiments with blocking youtube users with ad blockers
  • twitter blocks unregistered users, heavily advertises its app
  • reddit blocks api and 3rd party access, heavily advertises its app
  • microsoft creates windows 11 lets windows 10 users with old hardware insecure

Is this because they all act in unison? Or is it the general ecnomic situation (low prime rates by the central bank) of the American tech giants that leads them to "coincidentally" making the same decisions? My suspicion is its the latter combined with the power they accumulated over the past decade.

Linux back at 4.04% on the Desktop. Windows went below 73%

Windows 11: Add advertisement to the start menu, add remote Artificial intelligence to your daily live. Require new CPUs and motherboards / hardware, ignoring the market for old computers.

What will they do next?

  • More advertisement.
  • More features that require an always on internet connection?
  • Forced restart for software updates

This is why I expect Linux share to slowly increase until the old computers die and you will not be allowed to choose to boot another operating system besides Windows on your Microsoft-Copilot+ PC that would be your only option.

what's the asshole mitigation plan?

there are multiple ways evil can behave on lemmy:

trolling

  • trolling, it is annoying, if 25% of all posts are troll posts, the site can be annoying to use.
    • content voting systems can mitigate this tho, but bots will eventually find a way to game this?
  • the difference between trolling and spamming (imo): trolls type in their message with a physical keyboard. Spammers use bots to automate trolling

(Bot) Spamming / automated troll farms

  • spamming, creates huge load on storage capacity of the server owner, not good if you host for free
    • spam can be hard to detect in the age of chatgpt LLMs in general, because normal spam would be detected by how random it is. for example

adfjakjdfkl would be easily detected as spam

  • spamming huge amounts of text is still better than spammers creating huge amounts of video and photographs
  • proof of work algorithms can mitigate this issue somewhat, tho this also makes performance worse for everyone

any other thoughts on proof of work, or how evil doers can behave on social media sides?

Know your genocide apologists

  • Trump in the US about Putin:

"I'd say that's pretty smart. He's taking over a country -- really avast, vast location, a great piece of land with a lot of people, and just walking right in." "Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine -- of Ukraine. Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that's wonderful."

So Donald J. Trump i type C. ? Hard right? I would say Trump is not "hard" right, he is the leader of the right wing in general of all conservatives. He represents their interest best. And all conservatives in Europe think the same way as Trump:

  • Afd in Germany:

Kotré describes Ukraine as a US staging ground to destabilize Russia, adding: "And when we talk about that, we also have to talk about the bioweapons laboratories that are aimed at Russia.

He seems to be Category E, but I say he is also C.

  • Le Pen in France: Of meeting the Russian president in 2017, she replied: “The Vladimir Putin of five years ago is not exactly that of today, ... okay war in Georgia in 2008 was not the same? She wants to find a european solution and does not want the US to help Ukraine, basically corruptly Pro Russia behind the scenes like Trump.

People do not seem to realize how hard the right wing is betting on the destruction of Ukraine. They can use the same to eradicate the "social democrats" in their own countries as Putin did with Navalny. Use it to justify Authoritarianism at home.

Most of type E. "Peacelink" are actually type C. "Right Wing" in disguise. Conservatives are inherently drawn to conspiracy theories

  • The Protocols of the Elders of Zion
  • Great replacement
  • and now Nato "Bioweapons Labs" theory.
    • Donald Trump was the most Anti Nato president the US. ever had.
  • Hungarian conservative Orban tells us Ukrainian people can not win the war

One Piece chapter 1109

Wow, the summoning of 4 other elder stars using the same summoning circle that Saturn used was crazy. And the Gorosei can use telepathy somehow, how did the communicate without den den snails from Meri-Jose to egghead?

Also it seems like one of the Gorosei needs to physically travel close to a location to summon the others.

Maybe the 5 Gorosei combined will manage to interrupt the broadcasting of Vegapunk, once he gets to the most interesting point of his message to the world -- that would be typical Oda fashion.

It's time to try again!

When playing on community servers I never witnessed aim bots until now.

  • Uncletopia servers are okay...
  • there are funny inofficial game modes like:
    • x1000 multiplies all weapon stats by 1000
    • classwars one team is one class. for example medics vs scouts
    • randomizer, get a random weapon (for example Medigun as heavy)
    • jump training maps: solve pakours
    • grappling hooks on ctf (community maps like ctf orange)
    • 100 players in one server

So: Community servers should be used more often by normal players, they offer diverse different maps and gamemodes and are a decentralized solution to the bot problem.

[meme] Name one good reason we should stick with outdated cars when we have yachts now??

This story is amazing. I personally thought about canal development in a more positive light, as cargo transport over seas is the most fuel efficient form of transport known to men, beats even trains. Rowing in boats is also fun! Also most landlocked countries are poorer and have less freedom, because they have 0 access to the open oceans to trade and flee opressors and neighbors.

[Analysis] What other villains will return?

Personally I think it would be good if Enel did not return. It would be even funnier knowing he is in space living in his own isolated thing without interest in the "real world" and would be befitting of his god complex. This makes the world feel deeper, as there is stuff going on behind the scenes of the main characters, which is good for world building in general.

Villains like Doflamingo on the other hand have huge potential in their relation to the celestial dragons secrets and should return to finish off those plot points.

Announcing the Ladybird Browser Initiative

Reply in thread

Lets hope they stay true to their words and do not deprecate Manifest V2 later, since firefox is an open source project, theoretically anyone could fork it and build this on their own, but I heard compile-times for firefox is long. And as complexity of the web increases maintaining your own forked web browser will become harder and harder. That is why projects like Ladybird are important imo.

As more and more webpages do not support firefox anymore (Notion did not work for me today) the web will become unusable in a dystopian Manifest-V3 only future.
