Is it okay to express your feelings for someone even if you don't think they reciprocate

The answer to your question is very situational. Is this someone you just met, are you currently friend-zoned, is this someone you've already been officially dating for a while?

In other words, what stage are you at in this relationship?

This sounds like a situation where you're currently friend-zoned, so I'll answer with that assumption.

You're going to get a lot of opinions on this kind of question, one way or another, and some of this will just depend on what part of the world you live in. In my opinion, the best way out of the friend-zone is to just be direct and ask them out on an official date. This lets them know that you really are interested in them without putting too much pressure on them. At that point, it's on them to figure out how to respond.

If they are interested, they'll respond positively. If they aren't, they'll either say no, come up with excuses, or back out last minute. If they cancel on you, do they really sound like they sincerely want to go on a date with you? If you're not sure, give them another chance, but if you find that they consistently cancel on you, then it's time to move on/just keep them as a friend.

Trial begins for religious sect accused of killing child

The vast majority of Christian religions don't have anything against modern medicine.

The fact that a girl is now dead because of these extremists is heartbreaking.

There's a popular parable/joke that's often told among those who are religious about a devout man in a flood who rejects multiple rescuers while saying, "God will save me." He then eventually drowns and complains to God. God then responds with something like, "What do you mean?! I sent 2 boats and a helicopter!" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_drowning_man

For Christianity in general, there's a saying that we should first do everything we can and then leave the rest in God's hands. There's a whole section dedicated to this with the most relevant part:

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? (James 2:14)

Any Christian religion that chooses to ignore modern advances in medicine (be that vaccines, insulin, or whatever) shows that they're ignoring a fairly obvious lesson that the rest of Christianity has already learned.

Aside from filling out academic surveys online, how can I directly help scientists?

or logging the animals I see in nature or something

iNaturalist is a great way to contribute in this way:
https://www.inaturalist.org/

Just be sure to go into your settings and change the default license to something less restrictive (or whatever you're comfortable with).

It was introduced to me by a zoologist that specializes in Reptiles and I know it's a tool that researchers (or anyone depending on the license of the observation) can use.

What is the correct cereal/milk ratio?

Just enough so that, by the time I finish the cereal, there's only a little milk left.

Edit: The way I do it is to have a layer of granola on the bottom, then a layer of whatever floaty cereal on top. When I fill it with milk, it's a little bit below the top layer so that it's just a little less than what would make it float. That usually gives me the perfect ratio.

How to move from Google Maps to OpenStreetMap

I've used OsmAnd+, Organic Maps, CoMaps, MapComplete, etc.
My favorite app that I'm looking forward to is CartesApp. Unfortunately it doesn't have an English translation yet. It's only geared towards French users for now.

It has an interface that's very familiar to Google Map users, and clicking on locations brings up the kind of information you're used to when using Google Maps.

https://cartes.app/

https://codeberg.org/cartes/web

Edit: That being said, the web app works fine for me when "installing" with a browser that has a built-in translation service.

Towards an open, federated review platform based on OSM

There are some projects working on a review system now. The 3 that I can think of are Cartes.app, Mangrove, and lib.reviews.

The developer of Cartes discusses their review system here, and why they chose to avoid using Mangrove or lib.reviews.

They also answer the question as to why they chose to work on ATproto first instead of starting with ActivityPub.

Map Complete has added Mangrove reviews as a feature in their application.

OsmAnd had a plugin for Openplace reviews, but their service shut down in 2023.

I'm assuming this is a list you copied from somewhere else, most of these are not privacy issues.

  1. Is a privacy issue and definitely concerning. It was fixed a little over a month after the issue report:
    https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/13527

There is a more recent issue where DNS is leaking if your Shield settings are set to "Aggressive" for trackers & ads blocking:
https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/48947

1,2,3,4,6,7,8,10,11 are not privacy related issues.

  1. I don't think you read, or understood the article, because your summary is not what's happening there. In that article a website owner is complaining that Brave is scraping their website and using the content to feed some database for LLM training.

  2. I was confused about because your summary is incorrect (again). Brave does still block fingerprinting, but according to that article they removed the "strict" level blocking because too many sites broke.

If I want to volunteer online, where do I start?

Depends on your interests:

As far as some sort of one-on-one support service, I'm not too sure of online services for that (beyond helping out in specific forums when people ask questions).

You can help out with a variety of different research projects over on the Zooniverse:
https://www.zooniverse.org/

You can help by contributing to the map around your area: https://www.openstreetmap.org/

Help out with research on wildlife in your area:
https://www.inaturalist.org/

Contribute to Wikipedia:
https://www.wikipedia.org/

If you feel passionate about consumer rights, you can contribute to the wiki here:
https://consumerrights.wiki/w/Main_Page

If you like to tinker with electronics, check out Fulu Bounties and get paid for helping to get around DRM on refrigerators or on an Xbox. This has the potential to help a lot of end users as well as prevent E-waste. https://bounties.fulu.org/

Whats a good hobby to get into, as someones whos home alot with a laptop?

Volunteer for things you find interesting or fun.

Check out OpenStreetMap:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/
And help map out your area.

Then of course there's always volunteering for organizations nearby.

Why? I have reasons for each of these projects but for me it just sparks joy in contributing to projects that will help others.

How to move from Google Maps to OpenStreetMap

Reply in thread

OsmAnd does, but only for Android users, and only if you set up online routing to work with a particular service (you'll need an API key for something like GraphHopper).

To enable this, on Android:

  • Go to the menu -> Settings
  • Click on your "Driving" Profile -> "Navigation Settings" -> "Navigation Type"
  • Select "Online"
  • Select "+ Add Online Routing Engine"
  • Choose your routing provider that handles traffic data and enter an API Key

Even then, I find OsmAnd to be lacking because it doesn't show me multiple options for routes, but at least I can get the best recommended route based on live traffic data.

How would I map these crossings?

Reply in thread

It's hard to tell without some aerial/satellite imagery of your intersection, but assuming there are islands at each crossing, and assuming that "up" is North in your image:

The crossings at the Northwest and Southeast would be tagged as shown at the top of the page you linked:

While the 4 Northeast and Southwest crossings would be tagged as shown at the bottom of the page you linked:

What I look like explaining the family lore to my family

Let's talk about the mail. Pepe Silvia, this name keeps popping up over and over again.

I found these letters. Pepe Silvia, Pepe Silvia. This whole box is Pepe Silvia! So, I go to look up more about him, I'm trying to find his birth certificate, marriage certificate, etc. and what do I find out?! There is no Pepe Silvia, the man does not exist, okay?

So I decide I gotta dig a little deeper. I'm looking through census records, newspapers, obituaries, etc. There's no Pepe Sy- you gotta be kidding me! I've got boxes full of Pepe!

Alright, so, I start marching my way down to the county records office and I knock on their door and I say, "Hey Carol! Carol! I got to talk to you about some records for Pepe". We open the records and what do we find? There's not a single record for him in that office. There. is. no. Pepe in those records. The man's a ghost.

No problem! My French still needs a lot of work as well, but I usually just use the browser's translator for their blogs. From what I can see, it looks like they're open to getting the reviews working with ActivityPub eventually.

I agree that it makes sense to have reviews be a part of the social web. Hopefully one of these options takes off, we really need viable alternatives to the current big tech platforms.

I hadn't heard of SocialMaps yet. It's definitely an interesting tool with how it translates search strings into queries on OSM data. It was throwing errors for me instead of returning results, so I'll have to give it another try later on.
