Twitter is now completely "walled" (dont wanna rattle cages with a wrong title whoopsie)

Reply in thread

Quotes are often used around a word when it's similar enough to another word to be understood.

Paywalled means you must have an account and pay in order to view an article.

There is no equivalent word that comes to mind for this, but "paywalled" is so close as to be misunderstood only if you're trying to do so -- you must now have an account and login in order to view what's behind the login wall.

Biden Says He’s ‘Not Big On Abortion’ Since He's Catholic, But Roe ‘Got It Right

Reply in thread

And it doesn't really matter if a cis man is "big on abortion" because these laws will never affect him and his body.

I'm pro-choice but I've heard this and many similar things said and it's such a ridiculous thing to say.

"It doesn't really matter what you think about inhumane treatment for XYZ medical condition because you're not a doctor and you don't have that condition"

"It doesn't matter what you think about banning this important subset of knowledge in K-12 education because you've already aged out"

Believe it or not, things can affect you even if they're not directly happening to you. People don't exist in a vacuum.

Disregarding someone's opinion has never once changed someone's opinion.

Fuck Reddit

The issues will be fixed soon. This is a huge unexpected wave and the developers weren't exactly planning on hundreds of thousands of people migrating to their beta software overnight. But more people means more developers able to contribute to code fixes, so just keep being patient and it'll all work out. There is a kbin app in the works currently so your issues with mobile won't be issues long.

Blocking exploding-heads

Reply in thread

I disagree with defederation when it's due to non-illegal discussion, but I feel Lemmy (and kbin) should have more sane defaults. In a perfect world, no one would defederate but there would only be a whitelist of federated defaults on the main page for each instance so you have to actively go looking for the content in order to see it.

What's with all the NordVPN hate?

Reply in thread

That's happened with almost every VPN provider that has claimed to be no-log and then got a government subpoena. At that point you have 2 options: A.) Shut down, or B.) Code a technical way to capture the requested information for that user.

Sometimes they do choose to shut down and sometimes there isn't a technically feasible way to get the information.

Proof that bots are manipulating content

Reposting this in comment from a reply elsewhere in the thread.

If anything there should be SOME centralization that allows other (known, somehow verified) instances to vote to disallow spammy instances from federating. In some way that couldn't be abused. This may lead to a fork down the road (think BTC vs BCH) due to community disagreements but I don't really see any other way this doesn't become an absolute spamfest. As it stands now one server admin could spamfest their own server with their own spam, and once it starts federating EVERYONE gets flooded. This also easily creates a DoS of the system.

Asking instance admins to require CAPTCHA or whatever to defeat spam doesn't work when the instance admins are the ones creating spam servers to spam the federation.
