I needed a desktop environment with a UI that wasn't intended to be hidden away. Or a desktop that wasn't challenging the way that I intend to work with the computer.

KDE may be boring and it may not challenge any paradigms. But it works well and stays out of the way.

Back when I dual booted, I had the most success keeping Windows on a separate drive completely. After making the Linux drive the primary boot device, GRUB would pick it up and I'd be off to the races. I now just keep a Windows VM -- it's been much easier to deal with.

Yeah, most likely. The reason is simple: folks want a desktop that doesn't fight them, has fast window switching, navigation, and task management... and then stays out of the way.

GNOME knows best, though, right? pArAdIgM sHiFt (tm)! What is a desktop? Hide everything!

For all it's faults, KDE is much more usable. Xfce is great, too. They treat the desktop/laptop computer as exactly that -- not some strange hybrid between traditional desktops, mobile UI, and kiosk GUIs.
