They go from one rule to the next. Isn't it funny how that works.
Wait till you learn about who reinstated jurisdiction, police force, many federal offices, the Bundeswehr, in Germany after WW2….

Is this a USA-thing? In Europe tips are most usually split between front and back of the house.

While understandable from a pragmatic standpoint (what do when everyone was in more or less?) Germany still struggles with this old Nazi-coteries in vital bodies of the state, like judiciary, the Verfassungsschutz, police and the military.
What pains me most - not only in Germany - is that everybody acts as there cannot be any Nazis as they were defeated in 1945. Quite on the contrary, it is evident today that the fight against fascism is a constant and deliberate effort of any free and democratic country.

In the last years the max temps during the summer months in southern Germany have significantly risen - often over 30 C. I just moved into a new house here that fulfills the latest energy efficiency standards (kfw55) and am surprised how well it also insulates against heat. With a recuperating air ventilation system it’s pretty bearable without active cooling.

That is a very coarse categorisation. Really hard cheese, like parmigiano reggiano, is almost always already “contaminated”, which is why the last few centimetres towards the crust shouldn’t be eaten.
For anything softer than that, f.i. middle-aged Gouda or Emmental, I wouldn’t risk it, as the mould will already be spread far wider than visible.

Rezept gegen Apothekensterben gesucht
„Apothekensterben“… zumindest in meiner kleinen Ecke der Welt hat jedes Kaff mindestens 3 davon. Hier würde ich eher von gesunder Konsolidierung sprechen.
Ein Großteil existiert eh nur Dank der spendierfreudigen Globuli-Gemeinde.

The gardener in my last apartment replaced all of his powertools (mower, blower, trimmer, …) with electric ones powered by an accu-pack he carries on his back. This is an absolute game-changer! I could actually sit outside again and even do stuff for work, when he was there.

Seriously though, the German liberal party (FDP) has dubbed renewable energy “freedom energy”.

The AfD is nothing of anything you just mentioned. Especially in Thüringen where this clusterfuck is taking place, the AfD is as much full-on Nazi-mode as you couldn’t imagine in your wildest wet dreams about the Führer in latex underwear.

Elon Musk attacked German support for migrants and promoted a call to support the AfD, a far-right extremist political party

There always has been a solid 15% of the German population that is lost to democracy and favours fascist and extremely right-wing politics. This “nazi” foundation has always been well established in many governmental bodies and economic branches as they were necessary to keep the country running after the end of WW2.
Now they are employing the same tactics as before 1945: stimulating fear among disadvantaged population groups (if factual or imaginative) and scapegoating minorities (migrants) for everything bad.
The perceived hesitation and disagreement of the current government doing their part, many of the „Bio-Germans“ who feel disadvantaged turn to the idea of „the new strong man“ that finally „cleans up the cesspool“ they imagine the current political system to be.
If nothing drastically changes, I see whole federal states go lost to the AfD that especially in eastern states are nothing more than a thinly veiled new NSDAP.

I’ve just turned 40. What advice would you older lemmy users give me?
Build a consistent bodywork routine. Don’t bother with any high-flying goals, just stay active. A 30 minute routine done consistently every day beats hulking out in the gym two times a week by a lot. Fokus on functional mobility and flexibility exercises and throw in some full-body strength work like pull-ups, push-ups and squats.

Does anyone actually enjoy working out?
I make workout my me time: my music, my time, my body.
Viewing working out as something that is good for me instead of a chore also does help. Concentrating on my body, really feeling the muscles contract is kind of a meditation to me.

Shoes that dont wear out and start falling apart after a year?
I‘d generally advice against sneakers. If you want shoes that last, get some quality leather shoes, ideally Goodyear welted ones. When properly taken care of, they can last many years and can then be repaired. Also they will fit very well, after being broken in.

Oil change was attempted
I've owned VW, Ford, Toyota, Mercedes, Renault... all of them had yellow wiper fluid caps and black oil caps. What kind of car is this?
Btw: oil is almost always filled directly into the engine main block, not into any kind of plastic container.

Is south Germany very conservative?
As a SW-German, I’d say it is way more a rural vs. urban thing. In the greater Stuttgart area f.i. don’t worry about openly living a gay lifestyle. If you live out in the woods, it might be different, but not necessarily so.
That being said, SW’eners are generally way more conservative towards any kind of “fun” or “flamboyant“ things - legacy of the very pietist history here.

Are all Linux vendor kernels insecure? A new study says yes, but there's a fix
Key point: „To be secure, you should always use the latest long-term stable kernel. The key word here is "latest." It's not enough to use an LTS […] [or at least] Continuously update to the latest kernel release, either major or stable.“
