You probably can't trust your password manager if it's compromised

Reply in thread

These attacks are more around the encryption and all require a fully malicious server. It sounds like Bitwarden is taking these seriously and personally I'd still strongly prefer it to any closed source solution where there could be many more unknown but undiscovered security concerns.

Using a local solution is always most secure, but imo you should first ask yourself if you trust your own security practices and whether you have sufficient hardware redundancy to be actually better. I managed to lose the private key to some Bitcoin about a decade ago due to trying to be clever with encryption and local redundant copies.

Further, with the prevalence of 2FA even if their server was somehow fully compromised as long as you use a different authenticator app than Bitwarden you're not at major risk anyways. With how poorly the average person manages their password security this hurdle alone is likely enough to stop all but attacks targeted specifically at you as an individual.

Dow drops 1,200 as US stock market leads a worldwide sell-off following Trump's tariff shock

Reply in thread

Normally Trump does what's best for the ultra wealthy, but de-dollarization of the world economy appears to be good for nobody in the USA. I have no clue what they're trying to do, I suspect he's just lost it and there's nobody left to tell him these tariffs hurt his croneys too.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if we're already too far along to save the dollar's position globally. Globally that's probably a good thing, but for any of us in the US it's decidely not.

Rednote right now

Their access to news is controlled and for some topics all available news is what we'd call propaganda. Particularly anything about Japan or the Taiwan issue. Most people I know there realize this to an extent but without any other information do still believe the core idea even if skeptical of details.

But at the same time I'd argue there's no such thing as a population that's not propagandized. In the US the big news corporations only will present views favorable to their profitability and continued growth. Sure they disagree with eachother, but it's still always a pro-business view. State news from Russia is (I'd argue rightly) not available on many US platforms to discourage it's influence for example.

high speed rail go brrr

It's much easier to build rail in places that weren't designed around cars. Even in rural China people live in condos and apartments with parks between. This helps with NIMBYism and combined with the already large amount of green space left in Chinese cities such systems can be built with the only real concern being the engineering itself. But China is also in a good position for that, as their workforce is incredibly well educated with more engineering talent than they can even fully employ domestically. All that PLUS the political will of a single party state meant it was a very different situation than California.

And that's before you even consider ridership, where even the best possible SF to LA route would still pretty much require you to get a car or taxi once you get to LA (because LA was basically torn down and redesigned for cars).

Seriously this. Every single IC which has digital logic contains some number of undocumented test commands used to ensure it meets all the required specifications during production. They're not intended to be used for normal operation and almost never included in datasheets.

Behold: A vibe-designed pcb

As an electrical engineer I'm reasonably confident my job is a very long way from danger. Analog electronics never made their way to internet forums at scale, and for humans the only real reference you need is an old book called the art of electronics. AI needs a ton of training data to be good, and outside of code and potentially law, I just don't see what other fields have sufficient training data.

I'd argue we're at the point where that would be a good business move too. It wouldn't fix my main issue of but allowing 3rd party repairs so I wouldn't buy one, but I know several people who have bought other brands due to Elon.

"Housing" Proposals

If they really wanted to change regulations they'd push changing zoning regulations in cities to allow building anything other than detached single family housing. That would be totally reasonable and help alongside tax incentives. But I have a feeling that's not what's meant by changing regulations...
