Hollywood unhoused count finds no reductions in street homelessness, but recent uptick in tents

A coalition that organized an independent homeless count in Hollywood found the neighborhood’s unsheltered population has remained flat over the past 18 months, despite ongoing city-led efforts to move people inside.

A RAND Corporation report released last week found Hollywood’s unsheltered homeless population stayed mostly unchanged throughout 2025, as reductions in tent encampments were offset by large increases in vehicle-dwellers and so-called “rough sleepers,” people living on the streets without even a makeshift roof over their heads.

Findings released Wednesday by Hollywood 4WRD, a public-private coalition, show that trend continued in Hollywood over the past four months. But the group also found in May that more people were living in tents and fewer in cars than RAND had observed in January, a surprising reversal of the recent overall trend.

“ It's not something we expected to find,” said Brittney Weissman, Hollywood 4WRD’s executive director. “The headline has been that there are no tents and no encampments left in Hollywood, but that’s not the case right now. So, we’ll have to see where this goes.”

I'm trying a new format to help build this community and to better help me engage with Burbank. Please leave feedback on what you like or think I could do better!

City Council Updates

I'm still trying to get the hang of when to actually listen. These meetings can be 7 hours long and seem to be mostly going through the motions.

May 20th Special Council Meeting

This meeting (video) was to discuss updates to the BRT plan (see the story above) and potential options for mitigating the effects of SB 79. Over 100 people gave public comment in support / opposing the BRT.

May 19th City Council Meeting

In this meeting (video), we got an update on the work done for the BUR Airport Terminal Updates.

Airport Executive Director John Hatanaka gave a presentation on the updates on the BUR terminal update. Mr. Hatanaka confirmed the October 5 ribbon cutting date was still on track. After the presentation, Konstantine Anthony lightly critized the use of AI in the presentation's mockup renderings stating "We have a city full of animators, so I hope we don't use any more AI to do the presentations ... You can throw a stone down the street and you'll get somebody who can draw that for you."

Burbank is falling behind on its ability to reach 60% renewable energy by 2030 (as mandated by SB 100).

Upcoming Events

Burbank Arts Festival

The Burbank Arts Festival will be this Saturday/Sunday from 11:00AM - 6:00PM in Downtown Burbank and will feature 170 different booths selling various artwork.

Local Spotlight

For this section I wanted to highlight a local eatery, shop, or venue that people should know about.

For the inaugural spotlight, I picked Ballers and Brew at 407 Irving Drive. This local coffee shop serves tasty organic coffee and pastries. The apple fritters are exceptional and their signature "Ballers" (similar but different from donut holes) are not to be missed.

Burbank police dog shot near 5 Freeway during traffic stop; suspect search underway

BURBANK, Calif. (KABC) -- A massive investigation following the shooting of a police dog shut down part of the northbound 5 Freeway, near Buena Vista Street, in Burbank Saturday night.

The Burbank Police Department says it's conducting an investigation in the 2400 block of Buena Vista Street and the surrounding neighborhoods searching for the suspect responsible of shooting one of their canines.

Police are asking the public to remain indoors and avoid the area.

Burbank police say officers conducted a traffic stop in the 2400 block of Buena Vista Street near the northbound I-5 on-ramp at about 6:40 p.m. when an armed passenger fled from that car and ran up the freeway on-ramp.

The suspect "jumped over the freeway embankment wall into a nearby residential neighborhood... during the search, the canine located the suspect. The suspect fired multiple rounds, striking the canine, before fleeing on foot," said the Burbank Police Department in a statement.

Officers transported the canine for treatment, police said.

No further details were immediately known.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Burbank Police Department Investigations Division at (818) 238-3210.

The Board found persuasive evidence that Trustee Tabet:

  • Formed a company (Specialized Support Services, LLC) on December 5, 2024—the same day the District issued its first payment under the contract.
  • Used her daughter’s name to conceal her own financial interest in the contract.
  • Participated in the vote and approval process for the contract without recusal or disclosure.
  • Received and deposited District payments through the LLC, with evidence suggesting she personally benefited.
