Burbank police dog shot near 5 Freeway during traffic stop; suspect search underway

BURBANK, Calif. (KABC) -- A massive investigation following the shooting of a police dog shut down part of the northbound 5 Freeway, near Buena Vista Street, in Burbank Saturday night.

The Burbank Police Department says it's conducting an investigation in the 2400 block of Buena Vista Street and the surrounding neighborhoods searching for the suspect responsible of shooting one of their canines.

Police are asking the public to remain indoors and avoid the area.

Burbank police say officers conducted a traffic stop in the 2400 block of Buena Vista Street near the northbound I-5 on-ramp at about 6:40 p.m. when an armed passenger fled from that car and ran up the freeway on-ramp.

The suspect "jumped over the freeway embankment wall into a nearby residential neighborhood... during the search, the canine located the suspect. The suspect fired multiple rounds, striking the canine, before fleeing on foot," said the Burbank Police Department in a statement.

Officers transported the canine for treatment, police said.

No further details were immediately known.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Burbank Police Department Investigations Division at (818) 238-3210.
