Oh Christ, really? That's just sickening. I often sort by new, sounds like I've been very lucky to miss it entirely...

Do cavers accept chipping ?
Yes, generally seen as a last resort to provide access past a squeeze but I know of several caves that have had Kilometers of passageway added to their surveys through the enlargement of a single point.

Websites to download cracked software for Windows?

Pretty sure they're asking for software FOR Windows, rather than Windows itself.

The Other Players Who Helped (Almost) Make the World’s Biggest Backdoor Hack
Fascinating read - interesting that the origin of the hack is not yet known (or at least, released). I wonder what the stats are on these sorts of exploits in OSS - the concept relies so much on trust and individuals.

Had to have the "Porn Discussion" with my 14 year old. Bloody hilarious really, he was mortified. Poor little bugger... Totally unrelated note: did you know that Kindles have a basic web browser that can display grainy, grayscale images?!? 😂

Auckland surgeons must now consider ethnicity in prioritising patients for operations
When thought about in the greater context of triaging patients this makes sense. Unfortunately its clickbait presentation does it no favours.
There are a bunch of different factors that are considered when prioritising patients: obviously the disease itself, but also factors intrinsic to the patient - age, comorbidities, prognosis, familial history, etc. It's a long list. And just like (for example) a familial history of a certain disease meaning someone should be a little higher on the priority list, ethnicity actually makes sense to consider, particularly if you look at overall cost to the health system.
Regardless of the reasons, it's been well studied that Maori and Pasifika have generally poorer health outcomes. This has a direct, measurable cost to NZ and it makes sense to try to reduce this. At a granular level, if you have two otherwise identical patients, where one is pakeha and the other Maori, it likewise makes sense to prioritise the Maori patient to try to reduce those overall costs.
It's not about special treatment (excuse the pun) for Maori/Pasifika. It's about doing the most cost-effective thing for the NZ Health System.

Audit went well yesterday - no non-conformances and only a couple of observations. Super happy. Today is all about chill and catch up on emails lol

Calvin and Hobbes is not good.
My kids love it, and are getting old enough to appreciate some of the more adult humour. So no, it's absolutely not "of its time". Definitely an unpopular opinion there to be sure!

Morning all. Spectacular day here on the West Coast - snow on the mountains, clear blue sky. Puts a smile on your face.

That's them. Nasty sting indeed - my niece got hit the other day swimming at our local beach here on the West Coast (S.I.)

Is it just me or has Lemmy become more negative and less fun?
I'm certainly missing the more niche subreddits I was subscribed to (a couple of really active permaculture ones, favourite bands, hobbies etc) but for the most part I find the general NZ news useful and relevant, and some good conversation around it. Other communities are definitely tech-focused but that may change with time. But as with any group of people, you always get the negative ones - and Baader-Meinhof had a thing or two to say about noticing things!

Late night for me last night - LandSAR exercise, bringing a stretcher with a mock patient out from up a river. Out in the dark, lots of river crossings - great fun but a bit late for a school night! Zzzzz

So that's it r/newzealand?
I'm enjoying the "everyday" content here on lemmy.nz so far - it's taken a bit to get a feel for, but for the main reason I hung out a /r/nz (breaking news, current events) it seems to hit the spot. Cheers all for that!
What I'm really missing on Lemmy in general however is that niche content - hobbys I'm interested in, bands I listen to etc. The Reddit communities for them were generally strong and active, but so far missing from Lemmy. Hopefully that changes with time, as I have no desire to go back to Reddit.
