[AIP] WebPrint a self-hosted webUI for your printer

DISCLAIMER: This is pretty much 100% AI generated. The project is kept really simple. Before you downvote, make me a generic webui for printers. 😉

I made this project to fill a need I had. I am not collecting internet points here, I don't care if you don't like it.

I found Akronae's repo laying half broken on github, made it work, and thought it was a simple enough project that it could have a rewrite (it needed). I can not participate in Github so here you go, full new repo on an unreliable self-hosted forgejo instance. If you are interested, take it before my hardware fails again. :)

What is it?

It's a web UI to upload documents and print them. I wanted that to print from any device in my home with zero config on device (think guests, family...). It pairs very nicely with scanserv.js.

It looks like this:

Remarks are welcome, but I do not guarantee maintenance. As we have seen the trend of AI projects not being maintained in time, I don't expect this project to escape that fate.

And now an attempt to tag: @[email protected]

Edit: added one screenshot here and 2 other to the repo/readme and added the license GNU AGPLv3.

Edit2, 20260822: After many headaches, I started hosting also a registry (that thing needed to host container images ready to be pulled) and made prebuilt images for amd64/arm64 and started a proper release. You are welcome. Professional stuff, I tell you 😂.

Edit3: Do NOT expose to the internet as of v1.0.0, critical security fixes incoming.

Selfhosting a printer (and scanner) server with UI

I think it would be nice if my guests could easily print and scan when they are visiting.

Printing should be relatively easy nowadays with the printer on the same network. Scanning is another story. I found this nice project which works very nicely.

However, I would love to have the same but for printing, that way I would not have to do device specific troubleshooting/helping when trying to print something from guests' devices.

There is this project, which has a screenshot of what seems to be exactly what I'm looking for, but the issues are unanswered, there is no release, the building of the project is lacking.

Dockerfiles are incomplete, they are lacking copy yarn.lock and api lacks db initialization. The ports seem to be hardcoded. And once built, it doesn't work or at least I didn't manage yet. I got the frontend finally up but can't login. My knowledge is very limited so I'm checking with you if there is anything similar in the landscape or anyone willing to help on that project. Unfortunately I am locked out of github.

CUPS didn't work for me as I can't see an upload option on the web UI.

edit: So I spent time on tweaking the akronae repo, and after a few corrections, adding CUPS and improvements, I managed to get something functional. If I have more time I might publish it. It's fully vibe coded though 'cause I couldn't be arsed learning TypeScript and shit, and the original repo has plenty of outdated dependencies which, same, I won't update because I don't have the skills.

Did you know you can use Conversations (xmpp chat app) as a Push Notification Provider?

Couple of days ago I lost the connection to ntfy.sh, so we started talking on the #selfhosted matrix.org chat about notifications and ntfy, I started selfhosting ntfy and then @[email protected] pointed out one can also use Conversations as a provider.

Long story short, I tried it and it works. This is the config for someone hosting xmpp with prosody and using apache reverse proxy. The original post of stratself gives the config with ejabberd and Caddy, it's linked in the beginning.

Amazing all you can do!

Chat control: what is in our politicians head?

I just watched the EU parliament plenary and they just voted in favor of Chat Control. I can't understand what's going on in their head. The last speaker before the vote had very good points.

I think we should now verify who voted in favor and have all their communications be public from now on.

Version issue with unexpected keyboard

Hello everyone.

I just noticed I had some issues downloading dictionaries for my unexpected keyboard. So I did some quick checks and noticed the following:

My (f-droid) installed version is 1.32.1.

The Aurora/Play Store version is at 2.0.4.

Did the dev just stopped the process to have it in f-droid or is it another f-droid issue? Is there another repo (at least not on the github page)?

Who else can't create Github account?

Tl;dr: Impossible to create a new github account.

Long version: This morning I noticed my WG tunnel was not working anymore. After some troubleshooting, I noticed it was the new android app which was the problem. So I wanted to report it. Like many other (FOSS) projects, it goes... through Github. sigh OK, since my older account has been flagged (aka Shadow banned) because I use an email alias, I need a new account. So I had to complete many weird captchas.

Well after all (see post image), registering is not possible. :D I followed Github troubleshooting steps, I realized the issue is with arkoselabs, one of their captcha supplier. Somehow it does not load, even with a clean new firefox (listed as supported browser) install without extension. But no problem since arkoselabs support was so helpful...

sigh... So I decided to give a try opening a ticket with my existing flagged account. Guess what? Yeah you're right. Not working either.

I have conflicted feelings because I'm happy to be kept away from a Microsoft product but I want to help a cool project by reporting an issue. All in all, it's quite funny I think.

[Solved] How to have mutliple domains on Modoboa with webmail?

[edit] Solution

In addition to the instructions in the link, make the paths relative in frontend/config.json (in /srv/modoboa/instance)

{
  "API_BASE_URL": "/api/v2",
  "API_DOC_URL": "/api/schema-v2/swagger/",
  "OAUTH_AUTHORITY_URL": "/api/o",
  "OAUTH_CLIENT_ID": "blablabla",
  "OAUTH_REDIRECT_URI": "/login/logged",
  "OAUTH_POST_REDIRECT_URI": ""
}

and I also added this in the nginx conf, don't remember if all was useful. In mail.domain2.com.conf

    location ~ ^/(api|accounts|autodiscover) {
        include uwsgi_params;
        uwsgi_param UWSGI_SCRIPT instance.wsgi:application;
        uwsgi_param Host $host;
        uwsgi_param X-Forwarded-Host $host;
        uwsgi_param X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
        uwsgi_param X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
        uwsgi_pass modoboa;
    }

...

    location /radicale/ {
        proxy_set_header Host $host;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host $host;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
        proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
...
}

As many have advised against it, I decided to start (almost self-)hosting my mail service.

I have tried with one domain, it has been running fine so far. I have not tested deeply but it works.

I want to host another domain, so I followed this guide which seems mostly still applicable: https://www.linuxbabe.com/mail-server/modoboa-multiple-domains

One thing though, with the current basic modoboa install, after following the steps in this guide, I can go to mail.domain2.com to access the webmail, however it is some kind of redirect and I end up on mail.domain.com. It must be on wsgi level because there is no redirect in nginx? So technically it's still working since it's what's actually under the hood. But would it be possible to stay on mail.domain2.com?

Or maybe I have missed something somewhere, because unlike mentioned in the guide, it seems I have to use mail.domain1.com to set up client IMAP and not mail.domain2.com.

I know this is not a modoboa support community but I am not going to create one (yet) and I am not going to reddit. And I can't open issues in Github. So live with it.

Hosting a matrix server with synapse, how do you handle registration?

To the people here that host a synapse server, how do you handle registration?

Do you use the new matrix authentification server? How does that work?

If not, registration works via element web, where you can have a captcha to avoid a bot swarm. However the only accepted captcha in the synapse config is recaptcha. Have you read the news? Well, we will have to change the captcha method. I think I read somewhere it was possible to use hcaptcha on elementweb however the setting does not exist in synapse, or I did not find it.

How do we do?

What about selfhosting a mail server at home in Finland?

I know, many advise against it. But it does not matter, I just want to try, not (yet) host my important e-mails.

So it seems that by default port 25 is blocked by the internet service provider(s?). So I asked my provider to open it, and they answered that as per traficom rule, port 25 is reserved for the ISP and the ISP only, not to be used by private consumers.

The customer service could only give me this link, which does not explain why this port or the others are blocked. I also lack the technical background to understand this decision.

Can someone explain to me? And are there ways around it without using a VPS? What is/are an association for the defense of digital rights here, that would have content in English?

Thank You!

Jellyfin client under Arch

Recently Jellyfin client was crashing under Garuda distro. Instead of doing proper troubleshooting I just deleted it via package manager but... I did not pay attention under what repo it was (AUR?) and could not find it anymore to reinstall it. Has it been removed from the repo? Who should I ask? I solved my problem by installing flatpak but somehow I would prefer to have it in an Arch/garuda repo.

Revolt became Stoat and is not in Fdroid anymore.

cross-posted from: https://sopuli.xyz/post/35523960

Stoat (formerly known as Revolt) is a selfhostable, FOSS replacement for discord [Group chats and voice channels you can join any time].

Cool new name, however not as easy to use in other languages.

Voice chat is stil not officialy implemented.

Self-hosting there. Apparently nothing to do for you if you had already hosted before the name change.

The Android app has unfortunately disappeared (not been updated) on F-droid.

Edit: added short description for clarification

Find My Device

Project 'Nulide/findmydevice' was moved to 'fmd-foss/fmd-android'. Please update any links and bookmarks that may still have the old path.

Find My Device has moved (since V0.10, V0.12 as of writing) and if you are hosting the server yourself, you might have missed that and might be locked out of the website interface.

If you have autoupdates on FDroid for your client, maybe you did not see the info.

Got 14 days ban for answering ".ml-style"

The post was a meme depicting a "lib" raging over Molotov-Ribbentrop pact in the top and quietly justifying Nazi collaboration of the Baltics/Ukraine/Finlande/Ukrainian insurgent army.

Text below was: "Average lib take when communism is involved".

To Which I answered:

" 'Ok so now its legitimate to invade these countries!' Average tankie."

Since .ml-users consider anyone outside their community a "lib" I felt I had the right to answer.

Anyway, my comment triggered an honest discussion AND was genuinely in the style of the post, so no I don't think it's fair.

For the curious, link to the post.

Dear boss, here is my feedback on AI.

I'm working for a relatively big company. Not long ago, our boss sent a mail around asking for feedback on "AI". I sent an answer saying the usual: you can't trust LLM on basic searches so it's useless if you have to double check, my short 2/3 bad experiences with it, and why I am concerned about water and energy usage as well as privacy problems with a nice link for each point of articles I found here (thank You people!).

But to be honest, I am still curious about this LLM thing and every once in a while try to give the thing a chance... but damn. This is really shit! Our work provides access to many different LLM models but I pretty much have had issues with all of them.

Copilot now hangs and crashes if I type more than 8 words in the prompt before sending the damn prompt. Once I manage to send the prompt and get a (relatively decent!) answer, the program crashes if I scroll too fast in the window. I mean... lmfao

In the beginning (months ago) Copilot was working in our environment but I anyway could not get what I wanted out of it, apparently my task required to much processing (making a powerpoint out of a big pdf).

With Claude V4, we are supposed to be able to upload files, but it works like one third of the time. Then I ask it some very simple thing like e.g. "how to write bold in markdown" and the thing gave me two blank responses and the thread was just fucked from here. Ok?

Previous version of Claude (V3.7 Sonnet) I was trying to get help on some basic scripts. First simple prompt, 10 words including "Hello" (Yeah I am the kind of person who writes "hello" to LLM, whatyougonnado?), answer goes full stroke with sentence parts, fucked up punctuation, repeats and ends up repeating the question. I found this one really funny.

I don't remember what exactly but I also had similar kind of troubles with gemini.

So yeah, just saying "ok, fuck ai", but to me this is genuinely shitty on top of all the other problems it includes. How can this be pushed so much in the corpo world? For real?

Difference between hindi and hearing impaired subtitles

Dear community,

Maybe the answer lies in front of my eyes, I am good at not seeing this kind of things but... Is it nornal that my jellyfin recognizes en.hi subtitles as Hindi instead of English? The subtitles come from bazarr and the related github issue I found is closed: https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin/issues/4291 Did I miss something?

EDIT: Bazarr problem: Somehow it was completely missing the language tag "en". My fix is to "remove HI tags" in bazarr. It is a per file operation though.
