NaNo 2026 - A New Beginning

Don't worry - it's not November yet.

But I thought I'd get a jump on it this year, since last year took me by surprise.

Plus a story plot invaded my mind and so it seemed like a good idea to start up a new thread and ask if anyone else was going to go mental and try writing again this year?

I'll set up some other threads later (possibly at a more suitable time!) so watch this space.

Nano 2025 - Games & Theory

Anything you like.

Jokes, games, puzzles, random discussions.

There are just two rules.

Rule 1 - No politics. I don't care what is going on in the world, what is going on in your country. You leave it at the door.

Rule 2 - Be polite. If you can't be nice to your fellow NaNos, go somewhere else. We are here for the fun and the craic, not to beat each other over the head.

Nano 2025 - The Plot Doctor Is In

Can't get your characters to behave? Can't figure out where to go next? Want to know what it sounds like when you stick a straw up a frogs bum and blow?

Just ask. You may not get an answer - especially to that last one (who in the name of the fluffy unicorn of doom knows what THAT sounds like?) - but if you don't ask, you'll never know.

Nano 2025 - My Plan

So I've been thinking about this on and off since the I learned that "the official NaNoWriMo" shut down, and this is what I've come up with. It's just an idea, and I am open to suggestion if anyone wants to weigh in and comment, suggest something else or whatever. I really won't mind and welcome constructive criticism (although if all you have is abuse I'd prefer you keep it to yourself).

x------x

There are plenty of sites that have sprung up to take over the role the former site played. The one I mentioned previously was one, another one is apparently a site where you can get a free account but also charges for more advanced parts of its services. And there are quite a few discord channels, facebook pages and other sites on social media that are filling the gap that the closure of the official site has left behind.

I'm not going to recommend or criticise any of them - that's entirely a matter for you. I have no opinion on any of them because (to be honest) I haven't investigated them and so to recommend or suggest one over the other would be wrong.

x------x

As for this sub, I'm going to open a few more threads for Nano 2025 - about progress, your project, friendly banter, if you have writers block and so on.

You can use this as your "site" if you want (I plan to - my one exception for recommending a site I guess!) or not. I won't be offended and throw my toys out of the pram if no one else comes here, cross my heart.

Unfortunately I have nothing to give away if you achieve your goal, or any goals, because I am just me. I can say "well done" but that's about it. Sorry, but that's just the reality of life in the big city.

x-------x

So that's my plan. I'm not trying to set myself up as any kind of official replacement. I'm just trying to get some pizza in an uncivilized world.

NaNo 2.0

There is apparently a new site - https://nano2.org/about/

I can't speak to what it's about, or how good it is, or really anything. I've just seen links to it and glanced over a few bits of the page.

But apparently it is being referred to as "the New Nano"

That's about all I can say. Because keep in mind I only found out about the end of "the original Nano" about ten, fifteen minutes ago so - you know - this is all relatively new to me.

So apparently I jumped the gun a little

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Novel_Writing_Month

So apparently it's not that time of year. At least not officially.

"In March 2025, the organization announced its closure. Interim executive director Kilby Blades published a YouTube video the same day citing financial struggles and "community vitriol" as the reasons for closure."

It seems that due to various reasons, the website has shut down, and the organisation has ceased to be operational.

Twenty five years after it was founded, it has been closed down.

That's........ I don't know. I am - I admit - somewhat surprised.

I'm going to give this some thought.

It's that time of year again

Ten more days until the start of NaNo 2025.

Will you be taking part? Will you be writing like a maniac

Will you be stretching forth your hand to take over the world?

Will you be bestriding the world like a mighty kitten of doom?

Will you be mixing your metaphors in a blender?

Okay. I may not have got a lot of sleep last night and some of this might make less sense than I planned. Sorry.

But if you have plans for November of the literary kind, tell us - tell us now.

Got any story ideas to work on in when NaNoWriMo rolls around again in 7 months?

The one time I tried, which was 20 years ago, family medical events forced me away from it. Every year since then I've either forgotten or have been busy, but this year looks good.

The homebrew D&D campaign I've been running for several years has a world-scale plot the players are getting close to resolving. Nothing earthshakingly original about the overall plot - typical evil empire trying to conquer the world - but I've created a lot of episodic adventures, on a background of local cultures and a layered ancient history that's been keeping the players interested, and there's definitely enough material for a novel. So why not?

So is anybody else doing any advance thinking about their project?

What now?

So November is over, and you've either finished your novel or you got as far as you could.

Or, you know, you gave up and started playing Trombone Champion on the Quest 3 because it's fun and it annoys your neighbours when you do it at 3am.

Whatever your experience, it's December so you have a whole year until it's November and NaNo again. So what will you do?

Edit and publish your story? Start a new story? Read other stories?

Do something that has nothing to do with reading or writing at all? (What sweet madness is this? I don't know what possessed me to suggest this!)

The community will remain, even if it gets little use so come and tell your stories. (Metaphorical ones, not literal ones -- unless you want to tell literal ones as well!)

I won, yay.

50792 words at Nov 29th 2024, 01:46.

Mostly spammed my progress on Mastodon. I really meant to participate here - I'm so sorry I completely forgot! I hope Lemmy keeps growing and there's more people here next year.

(And yep, I was writing on my Commodore 64)

Two sentence stories

It's a relatively simple idea.

You write a complete story in two sentence.

Horror, romance, comedy, drama -- you choose.

You can write it to make someone laugh, or gasp, or go "awwwwwwww" or go "ewwwwwwwwww"

(Note : I have tweaked my plot nine times since I originally wrote it. Friday cannot come fast enough)

Distracting Drabbles, Sidetracking Scenes, Additional Alliterations

Sometimes when you can't advance your plot, ideas jump into your head.

You see the sun glint off the river and a scene springs fully forth from your head like Athena from the head of Zeus. Or the flower on the side of the road makes you think "What if Simon Snow brought that to Baz? What would he say?"

If you can't write your story, try writing something else. Then share it.

Change a letter, change the world

You suggest a topic (Romantic Novels, Science Fiction Films, Horror Film, Teen Novels -- whatever)

Then people provide titles with a letter added, removed or changed.

Just because it's funny. And inventive. And it alleviates boredom. Or writers block. Or both.

(Full disclosure -- it's 13 days until NaNo and I have almost entirely plotted out my story. And as always I am SO bored & frustrated waiting for midnight on the first you have no idea).
