Reader Mode, Inline Chrome tabs, Advanced Search Filters - v451 is now live

It's been a few months since the last update post, and Connect has come a long way since then. Here's a quick recap of what's new.

Big New Features:

  • Reading Mode: A clean, distraction-free view that strips articles down to just the content. Toggle it on in Settings: Reader Mode, or flip it on per-page while browsing.
  • Inline Chrome Tabs: Open external links in fast, in-app Custom Tabs that keep you inside Connect instead of bouncing out to your browser. Pick how links open in Settings: Open links with).
  • Advanced Search Filters: Search got a big upgrade with new filters, better empty states, and smoother performance so you can find exactly what you're looking for.
  • Piefed + 1.7.0 support: Delivering on last update's promise: Piefed polls are now supported, along with broader Piefed 1.7.0 compatibility, dynamic instance detection, flair, and global vote totals.
  • Lemmy 1.0 support: Starting to test API support for the new incoming 1.0 API changes.

Smaller touches:

  • Domain Rewrite settings and a "Trust Domain" button on the link prompt
  • Case-insensitive keyword filters
  • Tap or long-press crosspost dividers to toggle or jump to the crosspost
  • New loading indicators across comments, profiles, and search suggestions

What's next:

  • Working on some ways to improve discover-ability of new communities

Thank you everyone for all of the support and suggestions, please keep them coming and we'll continue to make Connect the best app for browsing Lemmy and Piefed!

Connect 1.0.301 Released, Image Gallery Support

Hi,

If you've been on beta you've probably already seen some of this as I worked out bugs and other issues. But in general the top line is there's been some major re-architecture of the app which should let it feel even snappier and more performant than before. I've also added Image Gallery support, so now any post with multiple images in the body will auto-collapse into one image gallery. This is configurable in the settings if you prefer to see all of the images as well. I've also taken Horizontal swiping on posts out of 'Experimental' and it should handle pagination and backing-out more gracefully.

Galleries and video playback now work better and load in the right resolutions, images and thumbnails behave consistently, and animations feel smoother. I also made caching and performance improvements which should reduce stutters and stale content.

If you have any feature requests please let me know :)

TL;DR Changes (versions 287–301)

  • Media & galleries: added image galleries and video support in galleries; fixed uploaded images not showing, full-resolution image loading, tall-thumbnail aspect-ratio preservation, alt-text display, and various image preload/load timeouts and error-handling improvements.
  • Playback & UI: added video autoplay countdown animation, removed small image animation delays, improved community search relevance, adjusted image animation timing, and smoothed swipe-to-close behavior.
  • Caching & performance: fixed multiple comment/post caching issues (including edits showing cached content), introduced a setting to control max cache size, improved comment rendering performance, reduced memory leaks, and generally improved scroll feel and pagination.
  • Offline, federation & reliability: added offline fallback for community pages, federation detection for comments, enhanced error messages, fixed gray-screen and other stability issues, and reverted/adjusted settings storage to improve reliability.
  • Permissions, downloads & validation: improved Android permission handling for downloads, added file validation for downloaded images, and implemented download timeout and retry logic.
  • Misc UI & quality-of-life: added a bug report button, adjusted Export button placement, fixed bottom-sheet and external-link behaviors, made reply text selectable, fixed thumbnails not being clickable, and other small layout/typo fixes.

[FIXED]Load more comments button on revisit .451

Bug Report

Describe the issue: If I revisit a post, that has comments, a load more comments button appears and tapping on it doesn't seem to do anything.

Also, the dates for the last few changelogs are all the same. And I did notice the support the dev button was removed. Hopefully you won the lottery recently, hence the removal.

[ADDED]Overriding user notes when applicable

I noticed an account had a note with an asterisk on it. The note applies to this account as well so I thought if I edited the note and saved it with the same thing that it would get rid of the asterisk for that account. It did not.

I think in this situation, it should make a new note for that account; while leaving the asterisk on other accounts from other instances; so there would be two accounts from two instances with the note and asterisks for the rest.

[BUG]Blocked instance showing up on All .441

Bug Report

Describe the issue: I was viewing All and went into a post and noticed all the comments had a Show comment button on all of them. Each also mentioned it was due to a block on the corresponding commenter's instance but that's not true in this case; it's due to the instance of the community that was blocked. I have the option to block comments turned off so even if I block the instances, the comments should be unhidden. So there's two issues with this one.

EDIT: Screenshot of the post on All; it's the bookmarked one. To clarify, I don't block blahaj.zone because I'm a bigot, you can go through my voting history and see I'm clearly left-wing. I just don't relate to a chunk of the posts and comms so it's blocked.

Anyways, if I had to guess I think the issue is sometimes the app shows you a cached All page that seems to ignore the instance blocks. Leaving the app open for at least an hour and then coning back to it may also be related to the cause of this; if the block seems to be adhered to at a glance.

[FIXED]Upvoting sends comment to the bottom .435

Bug Report

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Upvote a comment

swipe to dismiss image sends me back to main feed

This isn't a major issue, I came here to report the issue with the post list refreshing and adding posts to the top/middle of the feed but saw someone had already reported it. Another issue I've found though that I don't think is intended behaviour is that if you navigate to a new community from the main feed, and open an image and then swipe to dismiss it, you return to the main feed rather than to the community you were just browsing. This also happens when opening images on user pages or embedded images in comment threads. This doesn't occur when hitting the back button, that simply returns you to wherever you were when you opened the image, it only occurs with swipe.

Love this app and all the work you do, thank you for that!

Bug: Post list destructively rebuilding in 1.0.431

Update: appears fixed in 1.0.434 released today.

Bug Report

Describe the issue: Hi, this is just a bug I wanted to share. A very strange issue has started I think after the beta update yesterday. (1.0.431, June 2, 2026)

In any view (Hot, New, Active, etc), the post list will load as normal, but after scrolling down past about 10-15 posts, will update and rebuild, seemingly finding additional posts and re-sorting them (think of an email sync, where emails in your inbox start appearing and re-sorting themselves). This goes on for a few seconds, completely destroying the selected sort order.

E.g., if you select New, it will at first appear correctly, but then after scrolling a few seconds a bunch of other posts will appear in dynamic updates, eventually leaving you with a jumble of posts not at all in New order.

I can record a video of this happening if it's confusing, but I'm not sure how else to explain it. Happy to provide any other information.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open any feed view.
  2. Scroll past 10-15 posts.

Not all comments loaded / Any comment made takes a long time to show

Bug Report

If I make a comment on a post, it will not show for at least an hour. Clicking on my comment in my history does not show the comment on the post. (Editing a post or participating in conversations is extremely difficult.)

Lots of small bugs.

Bug Report

Describe the issue:

  1. The text selector is sticky again during comment or edit
  2. Some comment replies do not unroll/expand in profile history.
  3. Not all comments load.
  4. My new comments don't always load until after app reload in profile history.
  5. Votes aren't updated until after app restart. (In profile history)
  6. Strange loading behavior/broken search for piefed instances.
  7. Text selector is un-broken editing this post sometimes.
  8. (Maybe not a bug) I can't sort by new in Connect community.

There are plenty more, and they all are mostly tiny things. A button might not work, comment replies won't unroll, etc. "Major" functions work, but everything around the edges needs polish.

The text selector one is absolute torture.

Subscribed communities not syncing

Hello! I wanted to give Piefed a try, and as part of that process, I've been resubscribing to a bunch of communities. However, communities I subscribed to on piefed.social (the website) don't populate on Connect. Communities I subscribed to within Connect do show on piefed.social.

Is there a way to get a Connect to refresh my list of subscriptions?

Performance issues (lag/stutter) while browsing Lemmy.zip instance

Bug Report

Describe the issue: UI becomes noticeably laggy and stutters when browsing content from Lemmy.zip. This occurs even when not logged into an account.

The app runs smoothly when logged out and connected to other instances, using identical settings.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Reinstall the app or clear all data
  2. Open the app
  3. Switch instance to Lemmy.zip
  4. Scroll the feed

Expected behavior: Smooth scrolling and responsive UI

Actual behavior: Frequent stuttering and lag during scrolling

Issue appears tied to instance-specific performance or how responses from Lemmy.zip are handled by the app.

False Subscribed List on Load

It seems that when Connect loads my Frontpage automatically that it is pulling from All instead of Subscribed. I had been somewhat ignoring this for some time, but it recently started bothering me with the new Sask community flooding my feed with local content. I can reselect Frontpage and get the subscribed content that I am looking for, but it defeats the purpose of having Frontpage as the default.
