v0.26.0 Released

Homebox v0.26.0 released!

Homebox is proud to announce the release of version v0.26.0!

But first, what is Homebox?

Homebox is the inventory and organization system built for the Home User! With a focus on simplicity and ease of use. Homebox is the perfect solution for your home inventory, organization, and management needs.

About the update

We have officially released v0.26.0 (v0.26.1 for a regression) and at the same time are continuing to make progress towards v1 (stable). This release covers a range of new features and bug fixes, including:

  • Entity Merge: The most comprehensive rebuild of how Homebox stores items/locations
  • API Keys: Homebox now supports "static" API keys, making it easier than ever to integrate add-ons and applications.
  • Password Resets: Users can now reset their passwords from the web UI if the server is configured with SMTP. For non-SMTP enabled instances a command is available for admins.
  • Experimental Import/Export: We've also added an experimental new export/import tooling that properly exports the entire collection, including attachments.
  • And plenty of other improvements and bug fixes.

Our full release notes can be found at Release v0.26.0 · sysadminsmedia/homebox

Caution

You can not revert back to a previous version of Homebox after upgrading to this release due to SQL schema changes. Always ensure that you have functioning backups before upgrading.

What about V1..?

Great news! We're making some solid progress towards a v1 release, and have documented our roadmap update here: Homebox v1 Roadmap: Update

newby: questions

I just started HomeBox (mostly for managing items in storage, but at the same time we are starting to catalog other items in the home)

I have a few questions:

  1. I notice that locations do not get an ID like items/Assets do. Is there a reason why? I think it would be useful

  2. Also, one can apparently not add images of locations. Any reason why?

  3. I have started by defining several boxes (in which we store goods) as locations, because that seemed to make more sense than tagging them as items (with contents as sub-items)

This allows me to later just attach the box/suitcase etc to another parent location and all items inside will move along with it.This is the main reason why I want images and IDs for locations too.

particularly also to be able to use the ID on a printed label for the location (boxes, shelves etc)

Is anyone else doing this, or are there reasons not to do this?

Re Ids. I think it would be good to have the ability to define several namespaces for IDs, (by defining a pattern etc) and then have the ability to assign the 'next if from namespace X' to each item. (with separate spaces for locations and items , but the ability to override that). And HB should remember the last used namespace to draw the next free number form .

The idea behind separate nemaspaces is to eg have one for each person's private items, for rooms, boxes, shelves etc.

Homebox V0.23.0 Released!

Homebox v0.23.0 released!

Homebox is proud to announce the release of version v0.23.0!

But first, what is Homebox?

Homebox is the inventory and organization system built for the Home User! With a focus on simplicity and ease of use. Homebox is the perfect solution for your home inventory, organization, and management needs.

About the update

We have officially released v0.23.0 and at the same time are continuing to make progress towards v1 (stable). This release covers a range of new features and bug fixes, including:

  • Removal of 32-bit Support - Starting with this release, Homebox is no longer available in 32bit forms, this include ARMv7 and older, and x86 processors.
  • Collections - Users can now be part of multiple collections; each collection is entirely separate and unique. This gives users more flexibility than ever when managing inventories, especially across different homes or shared spaces.
  • User Management - Along with collections, we've added some basic user management capabilities for collections. This is not yet full blown "Super User" type management, but it does make things a little bit easier.
  • Authentication Rate Limiting - We've also introduced a new rate limiting middleware for authentication requests, helping to further secure Homebox against brute force attacks.
  • Better Memory Management - Attachment uploads now use less memory thanks to improved optimizations in handling. Additionally, CSV imports no longer read the entire file just to determine a delimitator (which caused both memory and performance issues)
  • MQTT Client Now Available in Docker Containers - The MQTT client is now available in the regular and rootless docker containers, Hardened docker containers do not have the MQTT client due to the distroless nature of that container image.
  • ... And much more!

You can see a full list of changes here: Changelog

Note

We're changing our release cycle to be more consistent and to have more testing, you can read more about it here: Homebox Testing and Release Changes

Homebox v0.23.0 Release Candidate 1 Available

Following our new release cycle (which you can read about on our blog) we're making the first release candidate available for the v0.23.0 release.

Some of the new features in this release include:

  • Collections, essentially the ability to easily share your inventory and manage multiple inventories with a single account.
  • Renaming labels to tags (to reduce confusion with item labels).
  • Lots of bug fixes :)

BACKUPS

Always backup homebox before updating versions, especially for release candidates.

Generally we would recommend not using the release candidate for any production servers in case of critical bugs.

You can see the full changelog and binary downloads: https://github.com/sysadminsmedia/homebox/releases/tag/v0.23.0-rc.1

If your using docker you can update your version to 0.23.0-rc.1.

If you encounter any bugs or have any feedback on the release candidate feel free to share it here, on discord or on github!

Coming soon to Homebox: Manage multiple collections, share, and collaborate with ease

We are excited to share that a long-requested feature is making major progress: the ability to manage multiple inventories, which we are calling Collections.

This has been a lot of work, but once released, Collections will allow you to:

  • Easily share and collaborate on your inventories with others.
  • Keep separate inventories for different contexts (e.g. your workshop vs your house).
  • Organise your items more effectively than ever before.

We are aiming to get this out in our next release (targeting around 30th Jan), though as always, this depends on development and testing time. The initial release as planned will not include features like rbac (e.g. different roles within a collection) though this is planned for a future release.

Let us know what you think!

Confusion on mail config and Shoutrrr

Hi everyone,

I only just finished setting up HomeBox after quite a while of thinking whether it would be worth it (it is), but I'm a bit confused about the Mail setup through environment (HBOX_MAILER_*) and how/whether it interacts with smtp-type notification channels:

  • How can I check whether my environment setup is correct?
  • Is there any way to to just attach a notification hook to the configured mail account, or do I need to pass in a full set of credentials every time/for every user?

Thanks a lot!

Multiple accounts/users on one inventory?

Hi! This question feels a bit awkward to ask, because I feel like I misunderstood something fundamental about the project, but:

Are inventories locked to accounts?

I wanted to categorize my home which I share with my partner. So when I created an account for them, I was a bit surprised that all the stuff I already created didn't show up on their dashboard... Because apparently, they had their own inventory.

So, is there some option to share the inventory? If not: Is this feature planned? Or should we just share an account to manage the same items? I couldn't find any

I really don't want to seem entitled. I know how much work these projects take up and was so happy when I found out that the archived version was forked and is actively being developed. :)

Peace!

Challenges getting reverse proxy working with homebox

Question for folks and a note. I'm struggling with a similar issue as the one below for a couple of services so this may not just be a homebox item but rather a PEBKAC issue.

I've got NGINX proxy manager set up and directing to homebox. I'm using the sub-domain 'homebox.mydomain.tld' and have SSL certificates etc already configured for all sub domains. Homebox is configured to be accessed on port 3100 and is installed on a docker.

My docker containers are managed by portainer and so I've set the environment to access any of my containers via 'http://portainer.mydomain.tld/:'. That works like a charm any time I go directly to that link. I then have configured 'homebox.mydomain.tld' to point to 'http://portainer.mydomain.tld:3100/' . It uses my SSL certificate but does not force ssl. I've also enabled websockets support. This however doesn't work and the access hangs.

The reason I'm posting here to ask if I may have missed a configuration on homebox that is necessary is that other containers such as Photprism and Jellyfin which I use the same structure for work with no trouble. Anyone have some ideas you could share? Even if its an RTFM and you can point me to a good manual I'd be happy with the help.
