Not-super-expensive portable monitor?

I'm in the market for an e-ink monitor that can sit on my laptop in front of its normal LED screen, and ideally just plug into the laptop without an external power source. Apparently some monitors are operating system-specific, which seems weird to me, and means i need one that works with Linux (and other GNU operating systems).

I'm not worried about a super high refresh rate or vibrant colors, tho those would be nice. I don't need a touch screen. I would like a manual refresh button, but that's not a deal breaker. Most of what i do on my computer is just text.

Does something like this currently exist for less than $400 US? Or is 400 really the low end?

  • The Dasung Paperlike 103 specifically does not work with Linux, and seems to be the cheapest monitor they sell.
  • Boox's two moniters are beyond my price range.
  • Modos' stuff looks interesting but it's not available yet.
  • TRMNL's screens are tiny. Their largest model is probably usable as a monitor, but it seems like it's meant to be a standalone device rather than video output for another computer.

Xteink X4

I picked up one of these a month or so ago. Finally getting around to using it and messing with the open source alternative firmware for it: Crosspoint.

Anyone else have one of these?

So far I'm loving it. Really, aside from the lack of backlight, it's a wonderful traveling reader for me. Yes, semi-annoying converting some books for better formatting but overall can't say it's been that big of a pain to do.

Why does my ereader lose contrast with small changes after a long time on one page?

I have a Sony PRS-505. Recently i noticed that if i leave it on with a book open the contrast stays sharp, but then making it change something small like pressing a volume key or removing a bookmark makes the contrast suddenly worse until i turn to a different page. Why does the contrast get worse all at once instead of slowly degrading over the hours it's left on a page?

A5X2 Product Page

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/22929553

Seems Ratta put up the A5X2 page by mistake earlier today.

It has since been taken down but it was archived at the link posted.

The A5X2 is named "Manta".

Who knows if the price is correct or was a placeholder, but it says "starting at $459" which is great news of true.
