Got a free 2000 328i Standard

I inherited the family BMW. Originally my grandparent's but passed to my dad when Grandpa died. It just had a new clutch and transmission in ~2020 after grandma killed it in protest of having to drive a manual in her 80s. The hood was stuck shut so we cut the pin and pulled it out. Being a New England car it's got some rust but nothing some bondo, sanding and painting won't fix. I have some experiences working on cars so I'll be tearing into it myself. Starting with the brakes and suspension which seem kinda wobbly. I'll then go through the engine compartment replacing every 25 year old rubber hose and plastic component. Since it was free the budget is what I would have spent on another car so probably $5-6k at the end of the day. I also have the original rims, they have winter tires on them and I'll be dailying them once I swap the tires.

Have any recommended (DIY friendly) upgrades or mods?

Cross-Canada Mini roadtrip (well, from Ottawa to Vancouver and back)

My family went on an epic roadtrip across Canada in a 2011 Mini Countryman, and I wanted to share this animation I made from it. We put a rooftop tent on our manual Mini (named Manuel), starting in Ottawa, we drove out to the west coast and back, visiting and camping in provincial and national parks. We went to Algonquin Park, Lake Superior, Quetico, Grasslands, Waterton Lakes, Juan de Fuca, Revelstoke, Glacier, Yoho, Kootenay, Cypress Hills, Riding Mountain, Lake of the Woods, Pukaskwa, and more. An amazing tour of Canada if you want to spend 10 hours a day in a car and drive your car into the ground. Now I have to decide if we trade it in or repair an exhaust leak, cracked windshield, slipping clutch, missing heat shields, bald tires, and more.

By the way, the rooftop tent is a Thule Approach (medium size), and it worked great. Not very aerodynamic, but it works.

GameSnacks in action

Video of Android Auto GameSnacks running on a BMW i4

cross-posted from: https://lemm.ee/post/1697993

This is actually a pretty good way to kill time while your car is parked and you are waiting for someone...

The animation is normally super smooth, but since I was using the same phone to run AA and take the video, that caused a bit of stuttering for the games.

Is there any 3rd party AA game other than this stock GameSnacks app?

Hyundai Horror Story

A little crosspost from Bimmerpost, I’ve had my f80 for a couple of years and thought I’d share my nightmare from late last year.

At the time I lived in an apartment building with an optional pay-per-space garage (which is where my car lived). It had at one time a fully closing floor to ceiling gate, but that had unfortunately been out of operation for a couple of years.

To walk the dogs, my fiancé and I would walk through the garage, out to a common grassy area. One morning she came back from the dog walk and immediately said “Elk…….. I think something happened to your car!”

I took the elevator down to find the scene in the attached image :(

The glass was from my neighbor (both in parking and in the building, coincidentally) whose Hyundai was affected by the recent spate of thefts. No transponder, someone stole her car, hit mine backing out, and took it for a joy ride.

Fortunately, a door replacement and some paint later, everything is wonderful with the car, I was just out the deductible!
