Got a free 2000 328i Standard
I inherited the family BMW. Originally my grandparent's but passed to my dad when Grandpa died. It just had a new clutch and transmission in ~2020 after grandma killed it in protest of having to drive a manual in her 80s. The hood was stuck shut so we cut the pin and pulled it out. Being a New England car it's got some rust but nothing some bondo, sanding and painting won't fix. I have some experiences working on cars so I'll be tearing into it myself. Starting with the brakes and suspension which seem kinda wobbly. I'll then go through the engine compartment replacing every 25 year old rubber hose and plastic component. Since it was free the budget is what I would have spent on another car so probably $5-6k at the end of the day. I also have the original rims, they have winter tires on them and I'll be dailying them once I swap the tires.
Have any recommended (DIY friendly) upgrades or mods?
Honestly if the car is not beat up, the best mod on e46 is maintenance. There are quite a few resources online to help with it and I would say the chassis is very friendly to unskilled DIYer
I'm going to get it up on some stands and make sure it's not too rusty, if it looks okay I'll patch it and start taking care of the deferred maintenance.
