From the article:

When we asked them about editing out the pins worn by Leicester’s University Challenge team, a BBC spokesperson said: “In line with our editorial guidelines, we advise that no badges, flags, and emblems or symbols are worn or visible during filming, along with clothing with obvious branding or slogans. If such items are not removed for any reason then a decision is made between the programme makers and the BBC regarding any edits to the programme.”

But the article doesn't say if this was made clear to the participants before they agreed to participate. The reaction of the students suggests that it was not made clear in advance.

Then why does everybody at the BBC wear poppies throughout November?

This supposed policy doesn't match the reality of their broadcasting.

If you don't see the problem here, I’m afraid you won't see other red flags.

It's irrelevant bullshit anyway, they weren't exactly wearing swastikas. I hope future contestants come in full rainbow clothing.

Yeah, what a fucking thing to edit out...

The pins are simply inclusive. By removing them, only the BBC has done anything provacative.

That was refreshingly uncensored. They called out Israel's genocide, called for Palestine to be free, and advocated for a workers' revolution too. The BBC would have been in a total panic to get them off the screen. More likely it wouldn't have let them on in the first place, or it would be one of those aggressive interviews where the interviewer willfully misrepresents their views then talks over the top of them.
