Are there (hidden) restrictions on Display Names?

I've tried to add a Display Name a dozen times now, settling on one with spaces and capital letters but nothing else other than alphanumerics. With everything I've tried, the "Save" button seems to work (in that clicking it shows a pinwheel and changes its color), but no errors appear and the display name doesn't take.

Is there a character limit? No special characters? Something else?

If I'm remembering correctly one of the limits is that you can't have a name that matches a community name on the same instance. This makes it so that mastodon users can post to a community by tagging the community as if it were another user.

Ah okay. That isn't the case for mine but I appreciate the example you knew.

Wait, when you say "matches," the one I'm trying contains my username, which is also a community I created to mimic what I'm used to over on Reddit.

Okay then I'm back to being sure that doesn't apply in my case, but again thanks for the idea.
