Yea, one of those weird things in gen 1 you can use the statues as fishing spots. Not sure what the actual catch table is as I have only done it with the old rod and you only get Magikap with it.
Yeah I think I remember that too. In gen 1 there's the "mew glitch" which relies on taking very specific actions so the list of possible wild Pokémon data does not get properly set when transitioning to a new zone.
It's plausible that it could affect fishing too, especially since many of those locations presumably don't have encounter tables, as they're not intended to have wild Pokémon in them.
There were tons of supposed ways to get mew that were total bull. It's kind of fascinating how that info spread across the world's playgrounds
Makes sense; IDK how the game logic works, but Magikarp is probably what the game defaults to if there's no other Pokémon in the lookup table that indicate what can spawn in the particular area you're in. Since statues are not meant to be fished in, it would make sense for that table to be empty/non-existent.
In gen 1 if you loaded an invalid Pokemon you'd get a glitch Pokemon made from garbage code the game reads from where it shouldn't, or MISSINGNO. depending on its Pokedex number. Gen 1 is held together with chewing gum and prayers, and there's very little in the way of error handling. Later games would handle this by defaulting to a giant black and white question mark called ????? that would usually crash the game if you battled with it and could normally only be found using a GameShark.
Mew glitch. Defeat nugget bridge, DO NOT ENCOUNTER THE TRAINER LOOKING NORTH ON THE GRASS WHERE ABRA SPAWNS, catch an Abra, be sure to visit the pokemon center in cerulean city before this next part. Line up directly north of the trainer by the Abra spawn, just one block out of his line of sight. Press down and start at the same time. If you did it right, the start menu opens and the trainer is visible in the bottom of the screen. Use teleport on Abra, returning to cerulean city. Go into the gym, defeat the first swimmer, then return to nugget bridge. Upon entering the route, a battle should start and that'll be your mew. Catch it.
The best part about this glitch is that all the silly steps make the instructions seem like every other fake, made up tutorial (I spent countless hours trying and failing to unlock Sonic & Tails in Smash Bros Melee back in the day), except this time it's actually real.
That's the easy way. You can force any pokemon to spawn with a combination of flying/teleporting away the frame a battle triggers and a mon with the right stats vs wild Ditto.
My sister 151'd Blue without trading by spawning starters, all the Red mons, etc.
It's real, but it's yet another gen1 memory corruption glitch that reliably overwrites the Pokémon encounter table if you do it exactly right. If you search for "Mew glitch" you'll find a bunch of videos on it. It involves some very precise steps and specific battles on that one bridge where you get a golden nugget, IIRC.

That's one way to do it.
An alternate way is the 'missingno' glitch on Cinnabar Island. The exact species of pokemon that can be found there depends on what you set your player name to be. Most of the time, it's corrupted and just gives you a glitched-out 'missingno', but if you select just the right character name, you can cause it to be any pokemon you choose. With the correct player name, that pokemon can be Mew.
I don't recall it exactly but its something along the lines of lose a battle to a particular slowpoke, travel to that patch of grass next to nugget bridge and use the escape rope or teleport trick when starting the battle with the trainer there, head to lavander town and head west. Once you leave the city you run into a wild Mew.
Pokemon games didn't even use kanji until gen 5 though, because Game Boy needed small pixel fonts and because it's aimed at kids who may not be able to read kanji yet anyway.
I used Pokémon a bunch to practise Japanese. I played Red/Ruby etc. in English, never had a DS, and picked up a 3DS. I really only know the Japanese names for Pokémon beyond... is Emerald etc. gen 2 or 3?

In fairness, I doubt he even knows statues exist because you can fish magikarp out of them.
...what?

Wasn't that one of the old purported cheats for catching mew or something? It seemed like every bug / weird thing was a rumored way to catch mew.

I never knew it to catch Mew, I just remember doing it as a kid for the lolz

That like supposedly running into the bus on Cinnabar island until Mew appears?
You CAN actually catch Mew in the original Blue and Red. It's similar to the item duplication glitch.
I went back years later and was able to do it myself after I read it wasn't just some urban legend.
Missingno
Except not missingno, actual Mew
Care to share?
Other then the poke event thing I only knew about the missingno item dupe/pokemon transformation glitch.

You could look it up just as easily as I could. I don't have it memorized
Lmao what a fucking dickhead.
Have you never used a fishing rod on the statues?
lol no why would I? I feel like your pulling my leg
Not this time mate. Its gen 1. Its held together by the will of the fandom like a 40K Ork lazcanon.
TheZZaZZGlitch is a wonderful channel for learning about just how hilariously broken RBY are. It's a miracle the game is as functional as it is.
If I worked for Giovanni, I also didn't see nuthin'.
"I said I didn't know his identity, not his name!"
Was going to say that kanji is difficult but given that his name is Giovanni it’d be in kana.
His name is Sakaki (サカキ) in Japan.
Pokemon games didn't even use kanji until gen 5 though, because Game Boy needed small pixel fonts and because it's aimed at kids who may not be able to read kanji yet anyway.
Ah right, makes sense.

Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen, Colosseum, and XD are all gen III.
Wtf is there actually a pokemon game called XD? That's way too on the nose for the pokemon fandom...
Ok, but who is Giovanni?
The gym leader.
