I just laugh and say "You think I'm a drug dealer? Well, now I think you are a poor judge of character"
Depending on the person, I then say "So, you want some drugs?"

1

Because their drug-dealer uses signals and they're hoping to score some cheap from you.

Because they think only criminals need encrypted security.
Just remind them that Facebook can and does read all their Messages.

Well, they would say that's different, since they say they don't mind, for an example, a police officer or authority they trust to see their stuff.

And they would say that they don't send nudes or something like that, and that they have nothing to hide in their messages.

Ask them what they think about flock cameras and similar tech. Also, if they have cameras at home, ask them if they’re ok if those cameras are easily accessible by anyone on the internet.

they have no idea what those are in here, also with the cameras in home it'd be the same as the previous answer

2

Welp, if they don't care that anyone can watch their cameras, even the indoor ones, then yeah truly don't care about their privacy. So no reason to waste your time trying to convince them any further.

"How'd you manage that one?"

Zuck: People just submitted it. Zuck: I don't know why. Zuck: They "trust me" Zuck: Dumb fucks.

3

Teach them about surveillance pricing, and about how corporations are using their data to drive up prices on things they need the most, exclusively for them. Hit em in their wallets and suddenly they start caring.

Lol

What you don't want a company to have your data? Criminal

1

I mean, I do.
The biography field is the closest thing I have to a therapist.

Given that it's the most secure, drug dealers and buyers usually use it. Still dumb to accuse you though, tons of people use signal and have no interest in drugs.

2

Becuase 3/4 people are r-worded and so you need to make at least 7 friends to have a better chance of finding someone who also uses drugs.

In all seriousness though it's essentially laziness at its core. Switching to signal incurs a debt where you have to consider whether to continue using all of the other platforms where your privacy is not respected. This is an especially shit-uphill task today and as long as the majority that don't care about privacy can continue to live in relative safety, it's easier to dump on the guy that even hints at spending a metric shitton of effort on a task where your skill level is about on par with someone having just learned not to eat their boogers in public.

lmao, this is the funniest title I've read this month.

But on a serious note: there's a strong propaganda pushed by people in power that only criminals need privacy, because "if you have something to hide, you must be doing something wrong".

Expanding on this thought, there's also a stereotype that only socially akward and creepy people (mostly guys) worry about privacy, because "eeeeww, why can't you just be normal? Nobody cares about privacy" (yes, I've heard women say that to me. Most of them are chill tho).

Now to counter argue the first point I made: the true motivation to push this propaganda is to have more access to people's information and consequently more money and power.

The irony is that a lot of those who say they "have nothing to hide" would tremble in fear if their spouses read their chat messages or saw where they are spending their money.

I had the same happen to me when I was younger. Not because of Signal though. People seem to assume that any non-standard behavior is based on drugs. Ask them why?

No, this is because a drug dealers use signal and other encrypted messengers as well, so that's why.

Drug dealers also use cars. The real problem is they don't see why they would want to use signal and therefore can't explain why you would. I always go for "I worked for a decade in IT and to be honest if it isn't secured to that level I don't consider it private at all" is a fairly good start. It is in my opinion basic security like using https or having an authenticator.

Yes, that is the point. The use of a tool for privacy does not imply criminal activity, just as the use of a car does not imply running from police. I hope that makes sense.

...no. The point is everyone else doesn't use Signal. So your analogy is not applicable.

True, but the question is about whether it is reasonable to infer someone is doing criminal things from their use of an encrypted messaging app. I don't use Signal so that police can't read my messages, I use it because it is good security practice to be sure that the only person who can read messages from me is the person I intend. If my partner and I are talking about private things that is our business, nobody else's, and if i use something like standard SMS to have that conversation it is out in the open for anyone to skin and see. I wouldn't want anyone looking in my underwear drawer, not because I have hidden drugs in there, just because it is private and not anyone else's business.

Because its a encrypted messenger service?

Your body your choice. These people who judge you for using drugs are the same as those who protest planned parenthood 24/7.

5

They have no idea how important privacy is, and that by default, you have none...

8

Id say: i dont have anything to hide, but some people do and I like to support them. Like people with autism for example. They shouldn't have to hide anything, but every now and then people in power use different groups of people as scapegoats to advance their agenda

Edit: typo

This is called "projection." Now you know that your friends are on signal slinging drugs and you're missing out

You reached the end
