I have my pickyness. But its not crazy wild. I dated a fella once who was def more on the spectrum than I. My best friend at the time, but when we went to my favorite mexican place, and he ordered chicken fingers and fries.. cant say I loved that.
Dating a super picky eater, only made me realize how important it was to me (as a varied cook), my partner love food of variation, at least to a degree where you can find something on a menu thats not chicken fingers and fries.
To his honor, he did try a few things out of his comfort zone I cooked. But I cant live off pancakes, pizza and chicken fingers, especially when I was in my baby vegan stages and just exploring new flavors. I started liking onions and peppers, avocado and spicy foods, and my pallet was growing. Nothing wrong with thiers being stagnant, but it was a serious incompatablilty, and I am not even the most adventurous eater.
It's like that meme one meme where Joseph Gordon-Levitt says "I have eight safe foods" and Zoey Deschanel agrees with him out loud but we can tell she is actually thinking "I have ate safe foods."
From the movie "Eight (8) Days of (dating) Summer"
Cooking is actually my deepest interest, I cook soooo many things, I'm obsessed with flavor. My only issue is texture, but usually I can find a dried or alternative way of prepping ingredients to avoid anything that will set off my gag reflex. So I do like 30+ different things.
I also eat ramen all the time, I have my go to when everything else sounds revolting.
My lunch can be the same thing every day for 6 months, but my dinners MUST be unique. And even stuff I love gets old quickly if I have it too often. Breakfast is somewhere between those two extremes.
Christ am I autistic? I've been eating the same thing almost every day for like 20 years. I only ever subtract/add to it depending on whether or not I'm trying to lose weight or enjoy life. but it's usually always the same thing. A year or so ago I decided I would add a pizza day, and guess what? same pizza, prepared the same, every time.
Can't go wrong with soup and sandwiches for dinner! steelcut oatmeal for breakfast, or scrambled eggs with frozen pepper/onion mix. I've yet to get sick of any of it. I suspect it may very well be my last meal.
It's perfectly normal human behavior but everyone thinks they're special. I'm not neurodivergent and I've eaten 100 homemade Taco Bell enchiritos over the past 3 months.
I just wonder sometimes, because my father is undiagnosed autistic (he just has too many hallmarks to dismiss), and I sure do act a lot like my dad.
And, yeah, same breakfast and dinner (I always skip lunch) for 20 years doesn't sound that normal to me... i know my ex-wife used to tease me about it.
No I force myself to eat a variety because eating the same thing every day is a great way to develop a nutrient deficiency. I don't want to end up like that kid who went blind because he would only eat potato-based fried foods.
I can handle it if needed, but will always gravitate towards pretty much ht same meals every day and there are people who say i have eating disorder or disordered eating.
Though it's highly beneficial so i don't see any issues with it.
This sounds really bad in a way, but at the same time... Why the hell not? Reminds me of some sitcome joke where someone asks if they should eat chinese tonight, and the other person says: "we had chinese yesterday" and the other person goes:"chinese people eat it every day."
Once you've found an efficient lunch that is nutritional, easy to make and doesn't taste bad, why would you not keep eating it. You just solved lunch! It's a joyous occasion!
During the pandemic I stopped eating out. I started making all of my own meals, and to make it easier to remember what to get at the store, I narrowed down to the same meals every day. It's been over four years now, and I'm fine with it.
No processed foods. Fresh or frozen vegetables and some fruit, organic chicken and milk, cheese, and nuts. That's about it. I spend 30 minutes per day total making meals. Once-a-week shopping is completed in 20 minutes, because I know exactly what I'm getting, and where everything is in the store.
I don't get bored with the meals, because boredom is all in the mind and I decided that food is not entertainment. That's all it took.
The fact I'm happy to eat the same food repeatedly doesn't make me autistic, other things do. Like there's a couple things I don't like and I've gotten past most of them. But in general food is pretty good and I can never eat enough of it.
I'm one of those autistic people who will eat anything and can cook most things. It's my NT wife who is for real the pickiest eater I ever met. Tacos, beef dips, chicken nuggets, pizza, all on heavy rotation.
frozen pizzas are on sale here for the first time in ages.. to a pre-pandemic sale price at that. if i had the extra money, the freezer (it's not terribly large, just the one that's part of the fridge) would be full of them.
I always seek out new things when I don't have to make it myself but when I'm making something, I'm fine with wraps every day for weeks, months, years.
While I probably could eat the same thing every day, it wouldn't be healthy but more importantly I'm cooking for more than me and my husband absolutely dislikes repeating too often.
I'd probably eat more varied food if I could afford to eat out often, or had the skill and discipline to properly cook regularly. I'm eating a lot of tortelloni lately.
I always feel like the odd one out here. I'm okay with eating the same thing for practical reasons but I really like having a big variety in food. Maybe being previously married to a chef trained that into me, and I certainly know how to cook from it so the making of food isn't a big mental overhead for me
Kinda... It's more like I have a small set of three or four foods that I rotate through, so it appears as though I'm more varied than I am. I don't vary too much from them very often.
I have been eating 3 breakfasts on rotation for around a year now (since I finally have time to have something that isn't cereal since graduating high school).
One is 3 containers, 1 with hummus as a dip, 1 with feta and garlic, and the last with a microwave wholegrain wrap cut into chips.
The second one is 3 eggs with garlic and onion flakes, feta and sometimes silver beet, then microwaved, then 2 quartered wholegrain wraps to eat it with.
Third is couscous with feta, garlic and silver beet and some salt and pepper.
I love the first two since I almost only rely on the microwave timer, and the last is also great due to simplicity but it takes the longest to make.
Do slightly different versions of the same meal count?
I subsist on mostly pasta with different sauces, Tex-Mex stuff, and a couple soups/casseroles during the colder months. I’m perfectly content with it to be honest
I mostly eat the same thing with light variation every day. Sometimes, I might want to change it up (sushi once a week). My issues are mostly with textures; I don't like things that burst in my mouth much (raw tomatoes, fish eggs, etc.). It's not that I can't eat them, and sometimes do, but I don't seek them out ever.
We get two meals per week plus a special dinner Fridays and Pizza Saturdays. But that's rooted in the fact that we meal prep and 10-12 portions for two dishes is about what we can knock out in a day.
The real culprit is the question of "what's for lunch/dinner" and answering it twice a week is a lot more manageable than answering it 10-12 times.
Actually, if you were to ask me right now, I don't have any favourite foods, nothing that I haven't had in a while or could go for and have, in fact, never eaten.

My autism likes routine; my adhd likes chaos.
This balances in the form of ever changing routines.

8 meals sounds like a perfectly decent sized roster to me.

I think I have the opposite where I can't stand the same meal for like more than 2 days, like the same lunch I planned for the rest of the week
still rotate between the same things tho
My lunch can be the same thing every day for 6 months, but my dinners MUST be unique. And even stuff I love gets old quickly if I have it too often. Breakfast is somewhere between those two extremes.
Personally I think eating the same thing over and over makes it taste like cardboard eventually, plus I end up worrying about balanced nutrition

Guys please take a multivitamin daily if you're not going to eat a variety of foods. Your habits are dangerously unhealthy.

Does it count as varying if it's different types of canned soup each day?
Same meal until it makes me physically ill to think about
I've been eating the same like 5 meals for 30 years.

Up until my mid-teens I ate almost all the same thing, but then I made a decision to try to be open to trying to eat new things and never stopped.
Just 8? Guess my dumb ass brain cant handle that, it consideres that too little. I literally have dozens of recipe ideas, that I NEED to rotate.
Japanese Curry is a good go-to st least.

What's a beef dip? Like a french dip sandwich?
Yeah, same thing.
My autistic husband cant even have the same meal twice a day
Do you mean 2 days in a row? Cause who on earth wants the same thing twice in one day?
Me. Im fine with it. Could eat spätzle with souce any day every day

I guess I'm definitely not on the spectrum, then, I've never been picky with food and always seek out new things.
I always seek out new things when I don't have to make it myself but when I'm making something, I'm fine with wraps every day for weeks, months, years.
I'm rotating places I order food from, but I usually have a preset combo at each place. Unless they remove or alter an item I usually order.
My Rotation:
Falafel Döner -> Mango Duck Rice -> Salmon Spinach Pizza ( -> Repeat)
:)
Sometimes I forget to buy one of the three vegetables I eat everyday so, yes.
While I probably could eat the same thing every day, it wouldn't be healthy but more importantly I'm cooking for more than me and my husband absolutely dislikes repeating too often.

Until a single pepperoni comes out undercooked. Then pizza gets blacklisted for 5 years.
never mind the fact it's already 'cooked' and edible (and delicious on its own) before it even sees the top of a pizza.
It may be fully cooked. But if the brain senses something is off, the whole deal is off.
How do you manage to undercook things on a pizza? It's sitting on top of it, so when the pizza is done the rounds are too.

I can handle the same thing for a short while, but as someone who loves food of all types, I would die if I was limited on what I could eat.
By varying, do you mean like changing the condiment I consume the one food with?
That's paradise.
